BUT - my question for you folks that swim open ocean a lot - suggestions on keeping the urge to vomit at bay? I don't know if I swallowed too much salt water, or if the rolling swell got me sea sick (I have become pretty ill in parallel shore swims in the past. Short swims so it couldn't be sea water consumption then.)

I don't have a ton of experience in long ocean swims. However, nausea when swimming is frequently caused by getting water in your ears. If you haven't already, try wearing earplugs.

I know most of the things I'm meant to do to make my swim better, but actually doing them is another matter. This morning I made a real effort to hyperextend my arms forwards, pushing an extra inch or two.

Positives were:

1) I felt smoother and faster. I purposely didn't time myself, so I can't say for sure;
2) the change made me rotate my hips more than usual, which is a good thing;
3) my muscles didn't seem to get any more tired than usual, and perhaps a little less.

Negatives were:

1) I got more out of breath. It felt like the extra extension either took more air out of me or made it more difficult to take in breath because my lungs were being stretched;
2) I didn't seem able to increase my stroke rate while maintaining the extension. I was meant to be doing a 'build' set but couldn't really push the pace much higher.

Just wanted to check if other people have felt the same negatives? And did they pass with time and practice? Just want to check if I'm on the right track or need to be making adjustments.

Anything new is invoking muscles in new ways which they aren't exactly up to the task, so they fatigue. Eventually, you adapt and all is good - providing the change you made is for the better.
If you are extending more, you're going through a longer pull, which will take more time and slow your stroke rate. More important than stroke rate is if you went faster and can you maintain going faster. But you won't exactly know that until you acclimate - the previous point.

I think one can reach too far. It's hard to get propulsion from such an extension. I have actually shortened my stroke to get my hand/arm into the sweet spot of propulsion sooner and more often with quicker turnover. I was recently in an Endless pool with video and the NOVA swim team coach was there and complimented my stroke while suggesting a slight change to my right arm entry - make it a bit shallower. I would have never caught that on my own. Without video, nobody here can tell you if it's too much reach or not enough (or just right). A good coach could tell you, though.

I did an open water swim on Sunday, or should I say I tried an open water swim on Sunday. Air temperature was 8 Celsius and the water temp was pretty close to that as well. It would have been doable with neoprene boots and gloves. I think there might be ice on water surface by now. It was extremely cold!!!! Back to the pool:(

Question for you.. how do your feet/lower legs go 'cramp wise' when you swim the same day as a long run?

It's very, very rare for me to cramp. *shrug*
I do the run-swim thing a lot so I may just be used to it.

Haven't posted on the fish thread in awhile so here is today's SCM swim:

400 IM sw/300 free pull/300 free swim
8 x (200 IM sw/200 IM kick/200 breast/400 free alt swim/pull)

9000 SCM in about 3 hrs and pretty typical of my recent workouts, i.e. a mix of strokes and kicking. Intervals vary obv but generally 10-15 sec rest. About 4300 out of the 9000 meters was freestyle swim/pull.

Really. That's all just waay too much swiming (Ericmulk and everyone between him and Kuzmkowski). I just worked out my averages for the year. ...Drum roll, please.
Swimming 9.9 mpw,
bike 90.4 mpw, and
run 11.9 mpw.

Clearly I need to be schooled with the lack-o-running version of slowman's "why you're a guppy" rant.

Today, sprint day.
w/u 1200m
6 x 100m (50k, 50s, 50p, 50s)

3 x
2 x 75m (25s easy + 50s fast. 50s fast + 25s easy) on 2 mins
4 x 50m (25d, 25s fast) on 1:15
6 x 25m fast fast fast on 45sec

50 c/d ish

3400 scm and getting tired for the week.

That's my plan, I'm building up for 2014: start the new year at 11-12,000 yd/day and try to keep it up 7 days/wk. Kuz is averaging just under 11,000 yd/day so far for 2013.

Won't have much energy left to bike or run though:)

Eric, I think we need an intervention. That's too much staring at a lane line.

Ya, if the bike took an hr and the swim 5 hrs, rather than vice versa, I'd be all set:) The mental part of knowing you're going to in the pool for 3 hrs every day is challenging, but mixing up the strokes, distances, etc, keeps it interesting and no worries about getting hit by a car in the pool:)

For some reason I find it easier to swim after a run. I'm totally opened up lung-wise, and more limber.

Only thing for me is to remember to take in salt/gels/electrolyte before swimming and then its all good.

I struggled with it quite a lot last season.

I think a lot of pull buoy swimming was the reason. Trying to 'save the legs' might have been the wrong thing to do

Denise, nice work, you have reason to be confident now! On the 'swim against current' question, I would say try and get as much 'drive' forward with each stroke - "long and strong"... not sure if you've tried 'catch up drill', or in the pool tried to work on 'distance per stroke'... but I can imagine carving your way into a current by working on long efficent strokes (as opposed to thrashing around with a really quick short/choppy stroke). See you at Coz.

MikenUltra wrote:

I guess I am the opposite... I can have aches and pains, and rather than go for a morning run and feel like I am going to pound more pain through my joints (pre-Hoka, of course :-) ), I can flop into the pool and slowly warm up over 1,000m to limber up and be jazzed for the rest of the day.

good 500, TC.
My Friday off, but had a eye doctor appointment - a follow up to last year's check on macular degeneration. No change, so it means, that's just how my eyes look on the inside. But, I had the pupil dilation drops and even with my darkest goggles, it was nearly painful this clear sky, bright day.

Thanks. When I left school in June I could do about that for a 500 (maybe a little lower) and 20 x 100 on 1:20. I'm counting to see how many yards it takes to get back into that sort of shape... 30k and counting... will try 20 x 100 on 1:20 soon.

I appreciate that you assume I'm that good. No - yards - 1:20/100 scm ~ 1:13 scy, right? I've never been in THAT type of shape. I am trying to get back to a sub 20 mile - PR is 19:45.
