Is that "The Sergio's" old bike. I was looking at his blog the other day and I could have sworn he was riding the same bike and the seat was the give away as I think he is the only guy I have ever seen ride that saddle.

You DID get me: that is a 21 tooth small chainring, the smallest ever seen in here, I'm sure - and I'm not proud.

But - with a 29er you lose two gears compared to a 26er. Just trying to get my easiest, "turtle" (as we say around here) gears back.

Had it made especially for the worst Transalp climbs (hate to dismount, even on very steep, 20% +, or 5/6 km/h, grades - and stage races take their toll after a few days).

But I'm not proud.

The $450 dollar kind straight from China. :)

Similar to Yishun or any of the other chinese sellers on ebay.

What does that weigh and what do you have for components on it?

Trying to decide how to build niner.

It weighs around 10,5 kgs (23,14 pounds) with a size L frame.

Main components are a Fox RLC 29 fork and a Shimano XTR 9-speed transmission with a 10-speed rear shifter and derailleur (XTR) and cassete (XT, 12-36).

I use a XTR 10-speed chain that works very well with this configuration of the triple 9-speed at the front and the newer 10-speed combo at the back.

This combination gives me all the gearing I need, for good and bad days, and means I could upgrade to 10-speed (and that 36 cog) without spending too much.

Chainrings (except for the small one) are Rotor: 45-33-21, and I have a MSC chain catcher.

Brakes are Avid Elixir R (not the top of the line Elixirs, but these are bullet-proof, the weight penalty is reasonable, and they're much cheaper).

Seatpost is titanium -- Van Nicholas.

Wheels: XTR hubs, Sapim Laser spokes, ZTR Crest 29er rims, with a front Specialized Fast Trak T-Bliss and a rear Maxxis CrossMark tubeless, and a liberal application of Stan's liquid inside.

I've done four 7-9 day (600-1150 kms) MTB stage races with this bike with zero problems except destroying a rear tire on the Transalp (my fault). I'm a conservative rider though.

Most races I do have a lot of climbing, some really technical and aggressive sections and not much mechanical support, so I try to go for solid stuff but the weight is always a concern too, especially the wheels.

I've heard stories of cracked Niner frames but so far (two years) no issues with mine and I would buy another one.

This said, if money was not an issue I would get the Specialized Epic 29er S-Works and be a very happy bunny indeed.

I hope that helps and good luck with your build!

The fleet.......

2011 QR Cd 0.1 (for races......sorry, shown without race wheels):

Yeah, I know....but the yellow really helps me find it in transition.....and cutting the steerer any more would ruin it for possible re-sale in the future......

1999 Merlin RSR (for the cobbles here in Belgium)

2008 Trek Fuel EX 8 (for the commute to work)

Yeah, I know.....but 200 days of rain + 100 days of mist/fog every year = fenders on a bike...even if it is full suspension!

My new build, just finished, was a lot of fun. It is a 59 frame and completely as shown comes in at 15.9 pnds. Did not even own a bike two years ago, probably won't take long for this thing to get out of control ;-)

Planet X Stealth Carbon. XL size. Use a Mavic Cosmic Carbone front wheel, and an older HED with Wheelbuilder aero cover on the rear. Transferred components from a road bike frame and built this up using ultegra. I use an aero H2o bottle between the aero bars, and ditch the downtube H2o holder during races. My first carbon frame, love it!
