"Two bikes at the crest of a hill, no pedaling, he's pulling away, and I have to start pedaling to catch him"

You attribute this to the frame? Interesting.

Frame and rider position. Considering that the week before, on his old bike, I would barely edge him out while coasting. Hmmmm. What is the variable in this equation?

"What is the variable in this equation?"

Well, for starters, "frame and rider position", and wheels I assume. My money puts the frame at the bottom of the list. Then again, the haiku says I'm wrong.

I figured I should chime in seeing as I'm the coaster being discussed.

Ah, the good 'ol days: Pat on his Nishiki, me on my Raleigh R700. 55+ minute 1/2 IM swims. Training rides in tri-shorts...Pat wearing underwear under his ;) Neither of us far from 2 bills. Chasing skirts. Boo and Satch :(

I certainly remember that day, though I recall it a bit differently. I just remember pulling away on the flats :-)

Going from the Raleigh with the Airstryke clip-ons to the P3 was a huge difference, though I'd wager the majority of the improvement came from the improved position.

Interesting.

It could be a good case study in micro or grass-roots marketing. Cervelo, has made some great moves with regards to how they have promoted themselves. In this business, it is the little things that count. Big, splashy and expensive marketing and promotional strategies don't seem to work that well. The bottom line of course, is that they have a solid line of product - but so do the other players. The bike business is such these days that just about everyone makes good, solid and reliable product. Consequently, the smart companies need to look at other ways to set themselves apart from the competition.

Good stuff, Jason. Yeah those were the days.

For the record, you were pulling away on the flats too, but that could be attributed to how much power you were putting out that day.The first hill that we hit was what sold me on the bike. You probably don't remember that hill because I was so far back pedaling to try and keep up! I will never forget it because it was so frustrating to me, but so apparent that I needed a new bike.

Thanks for chiming in...later

I think its just a matter of happy customers; word of mouth. If you ask me what I would recommend as a bike, it would be Serotta. I have never been happier. I genuinely get the feeling most people here love their Cervelos and recommend them whole heartedly.

I completely agree. I think Cervelos are great and I'm happy so many Cervelo owners here like them. But usually when somepody asks a question about a SPECIFIC bike that is NOT a Cervelo, Cervelo ends up being recommended. It happens with no other bikes.

Q: What do you guys think about the Pinarello Dogma?

A: Cervelo.

"responses must include posters suggesting Cervelo??"

just realize it's not cervelo pushing this. it's like the guy who always posts about promotion wetsuits whenever a wetsuit thread comes up. there are some people who just don't get that enough is enough. there was a time some months ago when kuota was the name that kept popping up. as long as it's not the company who does this on the sly, well, that's the nature of discussion boards.

i do think a good topic would be the companies whose bikes deserve to be recommended as true, important, serious options for those who can ride an aggressive tri bike, versus those companies that really haven't earned their chops.

For some reason I associate Cervelos with engineers. When people answer questions like "Should I get a Dogma" with "Cervelo", I just assume its because that person has no communication skills. Trust me, I started school in Engineering, I know. You just have to ignore them.

Certainly. I hope I wasn't giving the impression that I thought this was the case.

For what it is worth, I ran a search on the ST forum and got the following results:

Cervelo = 12033 hits

Quintana Roo = 796

Guru = 1325

Litespeed = 1659

Trek = 2466

I do not know how many of these cross over each other (mention of two or more in the same message) and therefore do not know the extent of double counting.

However, it does appear that there is a bias toward Cervelo. But so what? That tells me that Cervelo is a good bike and many enthusiastic and well informed people post their experiences in this forum. Finally, that is somewhat ironic given that the originator of this site created QR.

[reply]How about a Kestrel?

:-)[/reply]

Right on! The Talon rocks!

I think the excitement about Cervelo is>>> 1. They are known as a Tri bike company and now are very successful in road racing which give triathletes a sense of pride. 2. Gerard posts here, give us insight into the pro cycling and triathlon world, educates us and is pretty darn cool. 3. Even though I dont have a Cervelo YET, they are really SEXY bikes and from what I hear fast and fun.

Agreed on the "sexiness" of the Cervelo...saw a pic of a P3SL Carbon the other day, and damn that is one hot looking bike. Kestrel kind of reminds me of Toyota--- somewhat stodgy styling but a fantastic product that with a little bit of care will last forever. I know Cervelo has been around a while, and it is very cool that Gerard posts here (I have learned more on this board in the last 2 months than you could imagine) and is certainly on my list of "must test ride" before I buy...but so is Kestrel. And maybe the Trek. And maybe Felt.

Lots more choices now than even a few years ago---it can drive you crazy, especially since you have to go to a number of different LBS's to be able to try the different brands. But it's a fun search nonetheless...
