You forget a couple things ML:

1. My first run was over a minute faster than the previous fastest in the history of the event.
2. I am 21 and have been doing this stuff for a little over 2 years.

The rapid progression will only surprise the HATERS ;)

Agreed.

It ain't rocket surgery - he's a man. Get him all lathered up, then step away and say "I'll be right back".
Return with a sheer teddy in one hand, and a bottle of Lubriderm in the other.

Tell him "if I go to American Zofingen like I had originally planned, you get *this* (the teddy).
If I miss the race, you get *this* (spank city) for the rest of the summer.
Choose."

We'll see you next weekend. ;-)

How muddy are the trails this time of year?

At the moment, not at all.
But it's s'posed to T-storm tonite and tomorrow.
(and, if the long term forecast on Accuweather can be believed, it may also rain next W, Thu, and Sat).

So, who knows what it'll be like. Depends (tm) on how much of that rain we get, or not.

I'm hoping for tough run conditions. Will be fun to see the aftermath of DR biffing numerous times in his racing flats.

So what you are sayin is the more it rains between now and then the muddier the trails will be? Interesting...

Since I went out and got trail running shoes for the race last fall [and have not worn them since] I think that a tad bit o mud will be a good thing as well.

Now to find more watts and less kg in the next seven days...

Yes, that's pretty much it. A stunning revelation to be sure.

To add to other topics discussed earlier in this thread, here's my $0.02, and worth both pennies, but not a penny more:

1 - I've always worn light trail shoes for AmZof, regardless of conditions. Adidas Adizero XT's are my faves, but I also wore some Inov8 295's for the first run last yr.
If it's wet, I'll go w/ those. If dry, the XT's.

2 - tri bike, full aero everything: disk cover, Jet90 front, Spiuk helmet. Aero matters, regardless of the climbing and few technical descents. Coupla years ago, Casey Williams was killing me on the climbs, but I caught him on the descents, cuz I had a tri bike, and he had a road bike. Free speed.

3 - I've always run 12-27, and always wished/prayed for another gear at several points later on in the race.

4 - weather can be iffy and changeable, so bring light wind vest, arm warmers, toe booties, full-finger gloves. Better to have it and not need it, than...

"Coupla years ago, Casey Williams was killing me on the climbs, but I caught him on the descents"

I experienced a bit of the same with Casey last year. Trouble for me is that there is more of the course that suits him than me. I go downhill really fast, though not as fast as cdw, and on the flats/false flats I can at least hold my place despite a power disadvantage. But uphills...his power advantage kills me (as does yours). Aero might not win the day, but it will keep you in the mix.

I used Adizero XTs the first year I did the race. I used Brooks T6 on the first run and Adizero Mana second run...both road flats. On a dry day I would use road flats, though not the 5k superfly types...you'll need just a bit of structure to the upper and some manner of traction even in the dry. If wet, the XTs.

And I can say that if I were coming up for the race this year I would definitely be bringing layers, arm warmers, leg warmers, vest, and other weather gear. Definitely agree w/KINGML there. Better to have it and not need it than to be sorry. I raced Powerman Ohio in '05 and went hypothermic on the bike in the rain because I hadn't taken ANYTHING to layer for weather. Stupid, and cost me a shot at top AG racer on the day.

How has this thread fallen so far...

Yoda,

I know you are scared about me dropping down to SC and crushing your dreams but it was totally uncool of you to spray the road with oil causing me to crash yesterday morning. I swear I saw you for a split second before you turned sideways and disappeared into aerobic nothingness on the corner of 29 and middle line just as I went down.

Regardless, your evil deed will not carry the day. Even if my arm is in a sling and I have to ask for helping pouring the KCB's, I shall be the crusher rather than the crushee!
