When I worked my arse off at it I could sprint at a little of 1000. Oddly, I could do that fresh in training or at end of a 4 hour race but that was it. But basically not enough to do anything with unless it was going to line with a climber. Now, I'm happy seeing 800.

Looks like I have a tad more fast-twitch muscle than most here?
Once, when noodling around (I think for openers), I hit a few watts north of 1300 W. I don't actually trust that number, as there really isn't enough precision to capture the fine details on my road SRM, whereas a track SRM samples and records at 4x/ second. Realistically, probably more like 1250-1275 W when fresh.
I was totally shyte in races though, usually max out at ~850 W in an end-of-race sprint, and any effort above 1000 W was for something mundane like sprinting out of corners.
So most of my races never ended in sprints: either roll in at the end of a group or roll off the front.
What a few of the slowtwichers posters here fail to mention is that they got quite the aerobic punch. I've gotten up to 4.9x w/kg for 20 minutes before, but I think quite a few here can do at least 15% better.

1k max on my end as well but I had a decent power to weight ratio when I got down to hungry-child weight

I never broke 1000. Close (around 990 as I recollect) but that was years ago and likely beyond me at this point.
Speaking of 1000 though, Hoogland averaged 1000 for almost a minute in his recent kilo record (peak wattage of 2700)π±

Given that Kenney was trucking at 75 kph toward the end of his Keirin race posted upthread, 70x15 might not be out of the question for track sprinters. Though getting up to speed would probably be a real PITA.

I recently told a younger guy I ride with that if he ever hears me start a sentence with "back in the day" he should kick me in the nuts.

Yeah, I could do 5.3-.4 for an hour, which is great if you can get away, TT, stage racing or be a helper, which is what I was happy doing most of the time.

No question that phrase earns a kick in the jimmy, or even two. So I have that to look forward to.
Still trying to decide whether Iβm done or going to chase a couple goals this year. β23 was always going to be my last but Iβm not sure Iβm ok with being shown the door due to injury. Canβt decide if thatβs healthy or my ego chirping.

Get the Campy downtube shifter steel-is-real retro bike, salt-and-pepper beard, "comfort fit" MAPEI replica jersey. Think he realized that in β23. He was so good wire-to-wire in β22 that it almost seemed like that level you can only hit a few times in career. It's really easy to forget, but Wout *wasn't* great wire to wire in 22. He got Covid and was out for a bunch of the spring season, including Amstel/ Dwars Door Vlaanderen/Flanders. Seems to me like his new trainer definitely didn't miss how strong he was when he came back from that, though!

I hope that is the end goal - have him strong as possible before the key races. Hopefully brains and team direction improve too lol

Seems as though the only dilemma is if Mapei or Postal is the proper washed up kit.

I say use that ego for fire and chase with humility and joy.

That's where I'm at today. I still love being fit and the numbers are still pretty good with respect to where I have traditionally been, but I am having much more fun towing my daughter around uphill on my dad-bike. My only goals are to stay fit and enjoy the hell out of riding my bike. That's been good enough.
I'm getting bike racing cravings lately and have resorted to watch the NZ Cycling Classic. I'm almost embarrassed to say I'm jonesing for the Tour Down Under to start next week.

No need to be embarassed. 'Cross is all well and good, tides us over till the road season begins and perhaps works as a bit of palate cleanser, but it ain't the same as road racing. My daughter actually asked me when proper bike racing starts up a couple days ago and we were both pleased that the answer was "this friday!" with the TdU (women's).
I only ever raced Tri/Du, but haven't done that since 2019. I had assumed I would get back into it at some point but even when racing resumed after the whole COVID thing, I haven't. Like you, where I'm at now is just staying healthy/fit and trying to enjoy it, and not stressing about getting certain training sessions done or obsessing over numbers. I'm fine with it.
Though my son is champing at the bit to race his bike and I'm going to start him with MTB, so may dip my toe into that myself this year.

That's a good suggestion, thanks. Winning another race won't be of great significance, but the way to go about it would be more meaningful.

Evidently Plappy wanted every aero advantage he could get. It is funny that they look so different - I think pretty much every team has these different options, but they tend to all look the same.
I guess you're right. Never seen the skinsuit design diverge so much from the regular jersey/bibs design. Surprising.

I've been an amateur CXer and gravel-er, so thought I'd pick up MTB pretty easily when I started at age ~46.
Ooh-boy. No, it's different. In lots of different ways. Just an immensely physical experience in ways having nothing to do with "Watts." But super fun to learn. Like being a kid again.
