Yes, they said it's probably Lepto but the tests aren't back yet. They're doing antibiotics and IV.

Just got back from going to see her and she seemed OK. Not her usual self but she wagged her tail when I said her name.

Hope things go well Chip, sorry to hear the news.

BTW, not many people know this, but eating grapes - even just one - can cause kidney failure in dogs.

Just to pass along some information ... our cat was diagnosed with CRF (Chronic Renal Failure) in march this year. Our cat required getting daily fluids. There is a device called a GIF Tube that can really help (basically an IV line for your pet - so you can administer fluids without sticking them with a needle). It has really been a life saver for us. Hopefully your puppy doesn't have anything chronic and recovers soon.

While there appears to be some evidence that eating too many grapes/raisins can indeed cause kidney failure, I believe you may be overstating the case a little. I seriously doubt that there is even one case of a single grape causing kidney failure in any dog.

I don't have access to the actual article, but here is the study

I was in the vets this morning with Molly, our lab/shep, just an ear infection. When we were at the the desk getting the prescription, a lady walked in with a cat wrapped in a blanked and just started crying. She was rooted to the floor. You could tell what was happening and it broke my heart. I started to tear up for her but didn't want to make her feel worse so I just turned away to afford her privacy.

I am so attached to this critter, working from home she is my constant companion. Best of luck Chip, keep us updated.

the story you just relayed really saddens me and reminds me to love my kitty with all my heart every day we have him around.

When I left for the vets for the last time with my last sheperd I was wearing the biggest pair of sunglasses I had and snivelling like a baby. By the time I left I was a basket case. The vet actually sent me a card but my ex-wife didn't show it to me right away because she knew I wouldn't be able to handle it.

I can't go into pet stores because if a dog is over 4 months, I want to bring it home to make sure it is going to be ok. Animals are amazing. We call Molly "empathy dog" because the minute you are upset, she is in your lap. I'm obviously a dog guy but I am aware that no matter what animal a person has, it is capable of being a great friend.

Then that would be my vet overstating the case just a bit. She said that most cases of K9 kidney failure involved ingestion of a very small amount, contrary to what she had expected.

We'll know on Monday whether she's positive or not for Lepto. If it's negative, then she has CRF.

The GIF sounds like an option, but she's also incredibly anemic and is requiring blood transfusions. They can't figure out why her red blood count is so low. She's either bleeding internally (not likely), her body is attacking her blood (also not likely), or she's just not producing blood (maybe).

Two vets are basically kinda stumped by my dog's situation.

So with your GIF, how did that go? Was the cat able to function like a normal cat other than having a permanent IV?

He went in one morning to have the tube put in - out that afternoon. Other than a few days getting use to it - normal as ever. In fact, the therapy has made it far more active (CRF doesn't start really showing up til you've lost about 80% of your kidney function) - so basically each day we are flushing out his kidneys so no toxins remain. We are literally pissing money away - but we don't mind as long as he's happy. Occasionally a stitch comes out - but really a life saver for us. There is a risk of infection were as needles the risk is much lower - but we've not had any real issues with it thus far. I would certainly recommend it.

Thanks for the advice.

The worst part about this is that ultimately her level of care is going to be a financial decision. I hate that.

The next worse thing is that all these decision on what to do next are based on numbers. Physically she looks just like the first day I brought her in to the vet. They say she's getting worse and worse but they're only goinig off the results of tetsts.

I just really wish that, whatever treatment we go forward with, she could be home right now instead of having to stay in the hospital. I wish we could do whatever they're doing at home.

As far as the grape toxicity to kidneys, it only occurs in some dogs...not all. The exact mechanism of toxicity is not well understood and we also don't know why some dogs can eat grapes every day with no problems, and another dog can die from fulminant kidney failure after ingesting as little as 4 grapes. Strange thing. I'm a vet, but I work on horses...however, I just reviewed an article on grape toxicosis in dogs...so thought I would share what I learned : ).

Through our Elliot's illness - we have learned - you treat the pet ... not the numbers. Some pets just have high levels - that is their normal level. So you need to use those numbers along with your pets behavior to determine if they are improving or not. You know your pet best - don't solely go by what the vet tells you. The vet doesn't know your pet the way you do. Don't just go by the numbers and your vet. To many stories about the vet seeing certain level of numbers and telling the owner to put their pet to sleep - and then 2 - 3 years later that becomes necessary. I'll have you in my prayers.

My baby is looking allot better after a few days on Hills k/d. I am chaning Vets...It is about time I sleep. This is the first time ever that I have woken my self up crying - and it is over my poor dog. So far I have spent $2k + on her, would have spent $20 on her if need be. I am glad to love her, I am honored that she loves me...she is a great woman and a great dog...every man needs a dog.

Great to hear! I don't know you but I had my fingers crossed. I know what you mean about waking up crying thinking about your dog. I got watery eyes reading your post a few days ago because the current situation with my dog. They are great creatures, I just wish they had longer life spans.
