Big miss for IM on this one, with a lot of good pros flocking to this race. Looked like great races yesterday. This is why our sport struggles getting mainstream coverage -- even the high caliber races can't get a live stream.

Don’t know how long it takes IM to get their equipment there and set up for a race but I know the list wasn’t initially going to be this stacked. I believe several pros switched to FLA as it became obvious Israel wasn’t going to happen.

Likely to be full transparent, the decision on which races are covered and not covered were likely decided a year ago in pre production planning / race scheduling meetings.

It's a contractual thing.

IM had a pretty clear broadcast strategy announced at the beginning of the year -- it'd be renegotiating that midstream to be able to then provide live coverage.

You can probably guess that part of the reason for the Pro Series in 2024 is to be able to have those broadcast events earmarked well in advance.

(Also IM decided to broadcast Noosa instead. YMMV.)

Flexing to broadcast a different race when you have no idea who is actually going to show is logistically tough. It's not like flexing a Sunday game to Monday a week in advance when you have all the cameras in a hard stand and camera guys under contract.

Wurf Strava suggests run 800m short(ish). https://www.strava.com/pros/430673?hl=en-GB

His Garmin records the starting point along the beachfront, which was 1.2km from T2. I’d assume he just grabbed his watch and started running before GPS was connected, or else started running without pressing the start button. And for some reason it ends along the beachfront as well, 800m from the finish line. I don’t know how to explain that, other than maybe his battery dying.

I recorded the run as 42.12 kilometres. Some of my flybys have a little bit more, some a little bit less. It might have been a tiny bit short, but nowhere even remotely close to 800m.

Presume he has his Strava privacy settings on hide start and finish.
Less chance of random fans showing up to his house or hotel 🤣

I believe that was Wurf’s fastest IM run yet.

Yep. But not being an IM specialist is killing him. Can't come out of the water 24th overall and count on catching up with the leader when they will simply ride away from you in a draft legal pack.
I love Cam but the dude is in a no man's land.

it's funny - i wonder if he's also starting to experience the same problems as lionel. during a race like this i keep waiting for him to rocket to the front of the bike, but he never did. is he getting slower? is everyone else getting faster? is he changing his strategy? i can't really believe that legal drafting is so much more of an issue now than it was 5 years ago.

Well, he's 40. So he's getting slower.

I feel attacked, lol. But yeah, time eventually beats everybody. I hope he defies it for just a bit longer though

Right, he probably just didn't start his watch at the right spot... I started at the run out arch, hit the mile marks pretty close and had 26.3 to the line. The course was not short 800m.

As to Hanson, he is the only professional in the PTO ranking whose top 3 result all date back to 2022 and will go out of the top 50 and fall to around 60th place depending on his race today.

I used to be coached by Matt, so I’m a fanboy, but you have to acknowledge his results don’t seem to be the same as they were. I can’t tell if he’s regressed some, or if it’s simply so many people getting so much faster. Hopefully he can figure it out and turn things around, I’d think this Ironman Pro series is something he’ll look forward to doing since he races a lot anyway.
He ran amazing and enjoyed running with him and other pros. Of all the pros that ran through me, Matt was moving the fastest. Being on course and seeing where athletes were I thought he had a chance to podium but the front wasn't exactly moving slow.
