Pre sydney at the us otc when I was there...
Thorpe came with Klim and popov for a while.

Ian one day did a set of 10 x 100 kick w board and no fins at altitude LCM holding 107s (and none of that STROKING into walls or finish crap.. held the board all the way.)
his interval was 1:30

Thorpedo’s kick was insane. Size 17 feet and Gumby ankles didn’t hurt.

I picked my parents poorly. Size 9.5’s and short arms...

all times scy

50 free kick on side: 38.8
50 fly fick on side: 36.2
50 free or fly kick w/board: 39
in general I go about that fast no matter the effort. also I hardly ever do plain kick sets, I find them boring. I'm more likely to throw on a pair of fins if I want a hard leg workout in the pool, so I did that next-->

w/fins (churchills):
50 free no board: 28.4 (mostly underwater, but no fly kick off the walls)
50 fly no board: 26.0 (mostly underwater)
50 free kick w/board: 29.0
50 fly kick w/board: 27.8

flipturns without the board, open turns with the board. Minimum strokes into the wall (half stroke with the board, one full stroke into a flip turn, no strokes into the final wall).

I find all of these different declarations about how you didn't cheat amusing (dolphin kick off walls, extra strokes into the wall, etc). As if that matters to us mortals. Frankly, there are only two times that I have any hope of obtaining in any way shape or form. Not by kicking...but, simply by full stroke and probably with fins.

So, sure I can manage an all-out full stroke sprint in the high 30s...one-ish. But, I can't touch a single one of those times with fins on. I'd need a motor.

My whole life I have only trained for the 50 LCM kick with a board. 6000 meters a day of straight kicking, endless hours in the pool. While my legs are now the size of watermelons, on a good day I can break a minute. To all you who doubt this incredible speed, I can assure you, it is possible.

I've done 50m in just under 35sec (pushing off, SC).

Oh....just kicking?

With a board, I don't move. In fact, I may go backwards. (I've become convinced that kicking with a board is wrong. Convince me otherwise!)

With arms at my side I move forward verrrryyy sloooowly.

I'll go with 2min. Maybe 3min.

Obviously I have to figure this kicking thing out.

I only swim.
I used to run. (31:09 10k)
I never did Triathlon.

You have to point your toes. Otherwise yes, you do go backwards.

In college I could do about 32 for a 50 SCY.
I was not a good kicker or a sprinter.

Currently about 45s. Once, LCM, breaststroke since my flutter is decorative/a timing mechanism. About 52s for repeats.

I have to ask... Did this 2 year old thread just appear on your front page or did you go hunting for it? (Sincere question as these things happen from time to time and I've never figured out how.)

Take a short break from ST and read my blog:

New AOS Tri swimmer who now and then seems to need some assertion/consolation that (s)he is on the right track.
Disclaimer:
I am only a jealous little biatch because I can neither sprint nor squat.

Kicking... 29 SCM... no board.

We had a backstroker who could kick 25 high/26 low consistently (from a modified back stroke start). He went 24.25 for 50m back in 97. It was the WR at the time...

I used to swim at MCAC in Charlotte, which is where SwimMAC Elite squad used to go Tues/Thurs for LCM days. I was doing a set of pretty hard 100 swims and I was quite pleased to be holding 1:18-1:19 on a solid amount of rest.

In the lanes next to me SwimMAC was doing a kick set of 100s with boards (no fins). Lochte was in the lane next to me. I watched them do two 100s. On the two I watched, the send off was around 1:30 and Lochte, who was leading the lane, touched in 1:12 on the first one and 1:10 on the second one I watched.

...humbling.

I was typing up the exact same post except insert Cullen Jones for Lochte. In Masters we were swimming 10 x 100 meters long course on 1:30, coming in around 1:15-1:20, and those guys were smoking me with a kickboard. I was always the worst kicker on my college team, have always hated kick sets. Back in 1988 before they instituted limits on how far you could kick underwater on backstroke many of the faster swimmers popped up at 45 meters, hard to call it backstroke though only taking 2-3 strokes per lap.

When did you swim there? I trained with that group in 07-08 leading into 2008 trials - perhaps we unknowingly crossed paths...

I swam in the afternoon Masters (12-1) sessions 2010-2014 led by primarily by Heather ~ 4 times per week. 4-5 times per month I swam in the morning session (6:30-8:00), some crazy fast swimmers there. I could never figure out the Elite MAC schedule, sometimes I would see them 2-3 a week and sometimes wouldn't see them for 2-3 weeks straight. I could hold my own at swimming, average at running, but always sucked at biking. Haven't done anything competitive for 4-5 years, slowly getting back into running and soon to be swimming.

Nice - as for the schedule irregularities that's the way David Marsh (coach) is -- very ephemeral, and schedules are pretty loose (so were pool rental payments from what I later learned) - also depending on where we were in training cycles it might mean more or less long course (when I was there we still got a fair amount of long course time at Latin, Huntersville and Moss Creek)

If I remember right that was part of the reason he had to leave Auburn too.

Maybe asking for what time can you do for 10 km is more useful!

To be perfectly honest, I often search for "flipturn" (my current obsession) and find interesting threads such as this.

(Oh, and I did a dive-in 33.5sec last week. Swimming, not kicking.) :)

Why? That’s irrelevant to most distances we race. What’s relevant are times up to 400 meters. If you have solid times up through 400 you have the technique to swim well at longer distances (just add volume).(

2:11 was my best today for 50y. I did get it down to :55 with fins on though.

There is a lot of work to be done. To say that this thread has been eye opening is an understatement.

I'm actually not sure what to do next, but I know there is lots to be done that doesn't involve the front end of my stroke.
