maybe. but it would also result in a lot of wrecks since everyone has to place high to be considered for the GC.

the best sprinters would still get 100th place on the climbs regardless of how long the stage is, even on a 2k climb. unless you want to completely eliminate mountain top finishes in your scenario as well.

perfectly correct. besides Jan doesn't like climbs with constant changes in slope...and in the Giro it's a lot of that...in the Giro, you really have to be a top climber...although Miguel did the Giro-TdF twice.

Indurain just missed this list too -- he was 2nd in the Vulta in 1991.

91 - TdF, 2nd Vuelta

92 - TdF, Giro

93 - TdF, Giro

94 - TdF

95 - TdF, World TT champ

96 - Olympic Gold - TT

I remember in 1995 -- Indurain (and many others) said they designed a course that he would lose -- he was a big guy and they put lots and lots of mountain stages.

LA the two trick pony has also won the World Champs Road Race and won classics like San Sebatien and kicked ass at LBL and Amstel Gold. Sure he is no Merckx but on any day on any course on anything but the flattest pure sprinter stage, he can contend for a win if he wants to. So I would say that Lance is a well rounded rider, who can win in any circumstance in cycling except a pure straight up 75 kph sprint against the likes of Pettachi and Boonen.
