Realistically I'm undecided as to whether it is sad or a good thing.
There is a very sort of fairy-tale, romantic flavor to going to a "ruined" country and bringing back this beautiful girl you fell madly in love with- even though the two of you can barely speak to each other.
I would suggest, in reality, it may be very sad. These people are leaving everything that is familiar to them behind. That has got to be difficult at best- even if it is a tough environment.
It strikes me that the idea is more appealing than the reality. But then again, that describes most experiences in life.

They had 880 aces. Kill totals aren't really that reliable. In the Luftwaffe and Soveit you got promotions buy kill totals. They counted aircraft on the ground and had friends lie for them so the kills would be high enough for the Iron Cross.
The US had it's share of inflated numbers but our top scoring ace had 46 kills which is more realistic.

The other thing is the Russians, Germans, Japanese flew throughout the duration of the war while the US pilots were rotated out of combat after completing their missions/points.
Some of the German and Japanese victories were recorded in the thirties in Spain and China.
