"Psycho Killer" as performed in the concert is a solo acoustic number, so we'll start off with The National for that; but then "Thank You Sending Me An Angel" is also kinda twangy & cowboy rhumba-ish, so?
I'd love to hear Mylie Cyrus sing "Heaven" - should go dig into her Gospel roots and really spiritualize it
David Byrne uses a weird vocal styling on "Swamp" so let's give that to Lorde
"Life During Wartime" is made for The Linda's Lindas, as kids who've grown up in a life during wartime
Money Mark was The Beastie Boys keyboard player, and "Once in a Lifetime" has that great part opening it up; I'd like to see what he could do with it
Since it was originally a Soul record, and Chicano Batman can bring the funk, let's "Take Me (them LOL) To The River"
That's my list, off the top of my head. I'll have to listen more to the other participants and return - and revise if need be
Still don't understand the lyrics, so that passes as "accurate" LOL "What's your claim?" - Ben Gravy "Your best work is the work you're excited about" - Rick Rubin
Maybe not, but this is seriously one the best covers I've heard.
Casey Chambers would be well known to Aussies. She's been around for decades, and is an ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) hall of famer but I think her following in the US is still modest.

Backstory: it sounds like a classic sweet love song, but she was actually inspired to write it by her frustration with the superficial music industry in which she couldn't get a break on mainstream radio. Ironically enough, it became her breakthrough hit, and was played constantly on mainstream radio.
Hayley Williams was born in 1988, so she knows no time in this lifeline where this song didn't exist
She's probably been aching for a chance to cover it properly and Paramore delivers
Not "better" but judging by the antics in the studio, some people HAD seen Stop Making Sense, and behaved accordingly
So ... the Resident Swiftie has joined the chat (by proxy)
It's well known (by some? Most?) that Hayley Williams and Taylor Swift have been friends for a long time, and have collabed a time or two
We're not sure how Paramore got the "Burning Down The House" slot on the tribute album produced by A24 Studio, but apparently TS was inspired
"Hey!!! I love this!!!" I'm speculating what Taylor said, of course "We're taking 'ERAS' back out and I want you to open for me ... and bring this song in your set list. You'll see why later. I've got an idea"
What D'Swiftie told me is that during the re-worked Lover Era stage set, she builds a house, with nine rooms; nine for the number of songs?
Then ...
She burns it down!!! "What's your claim?" - Ben Gravy "Your best work is the work you're excited about" - Rick Rubin
I'd love to hear Mylie Cyrus sing "Heaven" - should go dig into her Gospel roots and really spiritualize it
Not even fucking close, was I?
Is it me, or does the re-worked chorus have a "Bad Romance" feel to it?
****
Listened to the whole thing at the gym earlier - I'll do a track-by-track review, shortly; I certainly wouldn't mind listening to it again ... and again "What's your claim?" - Ben Gravy "Your best work is the work you're excited about" - Rick Rubin
TRACKLIST: 01 “Psycho Killer” - Miley Cyrus Prediction - I'd love to hear Mylie Cyrus sing "Heaven" - should go dig into her Gospel roots and really spiritualize it
Reality - girl is fucking nuts, but a perfectly off-kilter interpretation; Is it me, or does the re-worked chorus have a "Bad Romance" feel to it?
The unplugged version was a red herring
02 “Heaven” - The National Prediction - "Psycho Killer" as performed in the concert is a solo acoustic number, so we'll start off with The National for that; but then "Thank You Sending Me An Angel" is also kinda twangy & cowboy rhumba-ish, so?
Reality - arrangement is closer to Fear Of Music version than Stop Making Sense, but I guess that was the intent. I kinda miss the backing vocals, but still a top performance
03 “Thank You For Sending Me An Angel” - Blondshell Totally stripped off the aforementioned “Cowboy Rumba” which David employed early on (as he wasn't a great guitar player, and he felt comfortable with the quick power-strumming). In David's version the Angel comes to save him from being alone; Blondshell sings like she was at the end of her rope (literally, perhaps) and her Angel is someone who has been through some shit, just like her - something more than just “a girlfriend”
04 “Found A Job” - The Linda Lindas Definitely sounds like it was recorded in the same loft where David wrote this, thinking of Public Access Cable Television, which was a big deal in 1977 NYC (Google “Ugly George”). Fifty years later ...
Judy's in the bedroom, inventing situations. Bob is on the street today, scouting up locations. They've enlisted all their family. They've enlisted all their friends. It helped saved their relationship, And made it work again
It's YouTube. It's TikTok. Anf David prophesied it (sort of?)
Prediction - "Life During Wartime" is made for The Linda's Lindas, as kids who've grown up in a life during wartime Ok, I captured the “let's put this in the 21st Century” idea?
05 “Slippery People” - Él MatĂł a un PolicĂa Motorizado Sung in Spanish, I thought I'd be able to follow along, but one side of my brain was trying to sing, while the other was trying to translate - I had to tell Translate side to shut the fuck up and just enjoy
06 “Burning Down The House” - Paramore Already commented upon, extensively, but it's fucking great!!!
Found out TODAY that the producer on this track, Carlos de la Garza, is The Linda Lindas’ DAD
07 “Life During Wartime” - Dj Tunez This is NOT the Aerobics Class we see in the film. This is a slow burn. I imagined a detective movie night-time drive; somber vocals and a soulful horn plays over a visual of rainy, slick streets; keyboards glisten at stoplights; our hero muddles over the victims and suspects and motives in their mind; calculating and recalculating ever false lead and double-cross. Everyone has always wanted a David Byrne/David Lynch collab - this would be part of it
08 “Making Flippy Floppy” - Teezo Touchdown Probably the weakest track - if that could be a thing? Sounds like they just refunded the vocals over the original track from Speaking In Tongues. So much so, I could air-guitar/-bass/-drum/-keyboards over the whole thing
09 “Swamp” - Jean Dawson Prediction- David Byrne uses a weird vocal styling on "Swamp" so let's give that to Lorde
Reality - The Ghost of Leon Redbone and Jim Stafford, by god!!! I can smell the gators and snapping turtles!!! Such a fantastic take for a kid from San Diego!!!
10 “What A Day That Was” - The Cavemen. Technically, not even a Talking Heads song; this was on The Catherine Wheel, a DB solo project I always imagine this as a “driving song” - someone had a really good day, and they're driving home to tell the family about it
11 “This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)" - BADBADNOTGOOD (Feat. Norah Jones) I have a complicated relationship with this song. And “Heaven.” And the whole movie, in some ways. But that's another story, for another time. And another place.
You can never go wrong if Norah Jones is on board. The harmonies (and laugh at the end is just too cute)
12 “Once In A Lifetime” - Kevin Abstract Prediction - Money Mark was The Beastie Boys keyboard player, and "Once in a Lifetime" has that great part opening it up; I'd like to see what he could do with it
Reality - For some reason, I'm getting a strangely dystopian feeling from this - like Life sucks so bad, you need to project yourself into alternate reality where nothing makes any fucking sense, to actuslly feel any sort of Hope?
Must've been something about the production that made the sound “feel” like it was being reflected off concrete; cold, grey, crumbling, and covered in graffiti
13 “Genius Of Love” - Toro y Moi (Feat. Brijean) They didn't re-sample the most sampled sample ever sampled!!! I say “Good for them!!!”
14 “Girlfriend Is Better” - Girl In Red Some would say - If David Byrne wrote “I Kissed A Girl” without the Cherry Chapstick But - no Again, it's a movie - Oceans 11, with girls, but NOT Oceans 8. “Stop making sense” is how they confound the system = don't think logically - the system only thinks logically. Do something that doesn't make sense, and you'll be fine
15 “Take Me To The River” - Lorde Prediction - Since it was originally a Soul record, and Chicano Batman can bring the funk, let's "Take Me (them LOL) To The River" Prediction - David Byrne uses a weird vocal styling on "Swamp" so let's give that to Lorde
Reality - “sounds like Billie Eilish” or “sounds like St. Vincent” have we forgotten about Lorde already?
16 “Crosseyed And Painless” - Chicano Batman (Feat. Money Mark) Prediction - Since it was originally a Soul record, and Chicano Batman can bring the funk, let's "Take Me (them LOL) To The River"
Reality - pretty close to the original, with some interesting vocal stylings, but there's a section (not quite a bridge; Rick Beato might call it a “pre-chorus”) which has a definite Curtis Mayfield vibe to it, and repeats that effect on the outro, with some flangey Wawa'd guitar
**** They missed a couple Bonus live tracks include "Cities" and "Big Business/I Zimbra", both of which were cut from the original 1984 film and soundtrack. Produced by Jerry Harrison.
Would've loved to see who could've done those? I hate to say it, but Phish already does a great version of “Cities”, slowing it down by half. I don't think anyone could do “I Zimbra” because no one can learn the words (except Fela Kuti, and he's passed away)
****
Thank you for your time. I know you have better things to do.
I, however, do not. Apparently LOL Randy "What's your claim?" - Ben Gravy "Your best work is the work you're excited about" - Rick Rubin
Personally I find it better than the album version, but not as good as the Stop Making Sense version.
Looks like the people have voted. Disturbed version of Sound of Silence goes over 1B views on YouTube but looks like the SandG max is about 135 million.
Can't say I agree with this...like the original better.
I don’t know if it’s better because in bloom by nirvana is a great song, but the cover by sturgill simpson is absolutely fantastic. One of my favorite covers ever
This thread is pretty old and pretty deep, so I'm sure it's in here someplace "What's your claim?" - Ben Gravy "Your best work is the work you're excited about" - Rick Rubin
