That’s my fault, as I noted in the first post about this attack. Given Putin’s history of using fabricated terrorist attacks to further his political goals it felt…if not reasonable then at least legitimate to ask whether this attack coming so soon after the election and the announcement of new armies might be an attempt to shift more Russians into the ardently pro war column.

it seems increasingly clear that’s not the case.

For clarity, I never suspected, thought or intended to imply that this was a Ukrainian attack, sanctioned or otherwise.

Russians not losing a chance to further their agenda, claiming the Ukrainians helped the attackers and they were planning to make their escape to Ukraine. If reports are true that they captured an attacker, I'm sure he could be "convinced" to say so.

Makes total sense. Attack Moscow then head to the heaviest concentration of Russian soldiers in the country. Crazy Ivan would be proud.

Yeah, my guess is that the russians with their awesome police work just rounded up the first random central asians or chechens that they could find (russians despise both). Then they'll just torture them for fabricated confessions. And create some kind of fabricated Ukraine connections of course. Then, it'll be time for more conscriptions for the Ukrainian meat grinder. Because, you know, never let a terrorist attack go to waste.

ISIS has claimed responsibility, so hard to say it's really false flag. But I can understand Ukrainian intelligence being very worried about being blamed for a purely civilian attack they had no role in.

Granted various terror groups taking credit for things they didn't do isn't unheard of either - so ISIS statements with a grain of salt as well.

My guess is if it's "Ukrainian" the actual Ukrainian government/military had no role in it. Possibly an independent "partisan" group.

But I lean heavily towards believing ISIS, particularly given the U.S. warning.

What are the prediction for spring/summer? Russia seems to be planning to mobilize another 300000 troops, most likely to take Kharkov. They will probably loose 1/2 of them and take the city. I don't see US supplying more weapons regardless of who is in power and when/if F-16s ever arrive I don't see them making any deference. Russia lost lots of ships but that is more of an embarrassment, doesn't make any difference on the front line. The new railroad is also being built without any interference.
Europe doesn't seem to take Russian threat too seriously and if they do doesn't seem to be doing much/anything about it. Poland's PM is warning about pre-war era but so far just talk. If I would be the Baltic states I would not count on NATO. Future kinda looks bleak...Or maybe I am just in a bed mood after reading/watching the news.

From what I've heard this is Russia's year to make something happen. They basically got a year's head start on the west in going on a war footing for a long term war. By the end of this year the west should be producing shells at a rate sufficient to match or exceed the Russian's. That being said, I don't think most of those discussions were thinking the US would abdicate their responsibility.

So I'd say a big factor is what happens in the US presidential and congressional elections in determining if a large and steady tap gets turned back on. I think the more success Russia has the more likely it's going to be that NATO troops end up in Ukraine.

Looks like the Ukrainians flew a small "plane" over 1000km to hit a drone factory in Russia. Hard to believe Russia's air defense is so porous. Shouldn't they at a minimum be able to detect that thing and shoot it down with a jet? It must have been flying over Russia for a few hours.

Thanks, often debate whether to post anything or not. People seem so focused on the Middle East, and while tragic, it is a story as old as time in the region and only likely to tangentially affect world history. Meanwhile the US congress is dilly dallying playing politics while Putin tries to overturn the existing world order. I think allowing him to do so has immense implications for what is going to happen in the coming decades. Every indication is Russia is taking a further totalitarian turn and the population is being militarized. War is now the regimes strategy to stay in power. I think anyone who thinks if we just let Putin win in Ukraine and everything will just be fine is deluding themselves. Not to mention the implications for China if we fail to stick to our guns.

Sounds like congress is finally getting its act together and may have a package for Ukraine soon, just hope it isn't too late.

Possible, but probably unlikely because of the number of attacks deep into Russian territory. I think that the Ukrainians have been testing Russian air defenses for a while and have a good idea where the gaps are.

That seems to be what most people think. Russian air defense spread too thin.
