Also another win for Sam! In easy fashion, his 70.3 is on form, is he planning any 140.6 this year?
There was some ad during the race where he said he’s doing a full two weeks from now to see if he could do the same with Nice later this year.

We all moan about Ironman coverage but there is an example of how it can be done. I am sure they could roll that kind of coverage out to most races. I really enjoyed it.

yeah, i've been happy with the outside broadcasts. i don't even mind the commercials too much - they're a bit too frequent, maybe. but it's a free product and IM's got to pay the bills.

I agree. I thought this was a great broadcast.

I gave it a B-. https://www.slowtwitch.com/...ulder_70.3_8703.html

Mostly because of the platform, not so much the quality of the broadcast itself this time around.

IM has done, I think, the most consistently good job of the current race producers in terms of providing live coverage. Will be very intrigued to see what Roth looks like in a few weeks.

My main gripe is when they follow the lead cyclist/runner for so long when there can be more dynamics/place changes/battles in 2nd -4th, etc. It would be nice for them to show those changes vs Sam Long (all credit to him and being up 5 minutes), no drama up front. The Sharpe, Lionel, Leiferman battle would’ve been more interesting to follow in real time than a single camera of Long on his own.

They did cut back to sanders and leiferman, was that a separate camera where they cut to it based on a producer’s direction? If yes, then they have the capability to cut back and forth and should do it more often.

I always cheer a broadcast when they have someone on screen and the camera pans back to show the other riders right behind or if there’s a gap! The little things that give perspective.

Where would PTO fall short compared to IM ?

Data and commentary leaves something to be desired against most of the IM crews. (I think Welch needs to move to being the 3rd chair only ever, although he paired well with Rinny.) And this says nothing for the all over the map nature of the Collins Cup broadcasts, which I found nearly impossible to follow.

And again, it's consistency. IM's gonna do this what, 20+ times this season?

If you grade on a single event: CLASH and the NBC pairing win, hands down.

I don’t see why it would differ dramatically from last year’s broadcast. Maybe the moto won’t precede but trail the lead group, who knows, but Challenge has been pretty consistent in how it live streams Roth and the Challenge Championship year in, year out, free on YouTube.

IM clearly learned their lessons from a week ago. Isn’t it a DQ if you cross to the other side of the road?

Yes, the pro's were told in the briefing that crossing the centre line would be a DQ, yet some clearly didn't get penalised.

Some of the pro athletes were penalised though for drafting off AG athletes, as the pro athletes sat behind the AG athletes waiting for a safe time to overtake (as they didn't want to cross the centre line).

As I recall when Holly or whoever It was asked about crossing the center line on that section of road, we were given an ambiguous answer. Basically told that that's not safe and we shouldn't do it. I don't ever recall hearing it would be an instant DQ. I crossed it probably 7-8 times over a 5 mile stretch, and that was with as much "On your left!" and "Stay right!" yelling as I could muster. It would have been enough space if the AGers were riding right and then only passing in the middle of the lane, but that just wasn't the case.

Just going on what Sam Appo said (he said he was told it was a DQ if you cross the centre line). Maybe it was ambiguous and Appo didn't feel like he could risk it.

Here is the concern ... Sam Appleton chooses not to cross the yellow because it is a DQ (it is a DQ, there is no ambiguity around it especially considering the events of last week), because of Sam's safe and ethically correct choice, he can't complete a pass and in the process he gets a 5 minute penalty. Question is, if he crosses the yellow to make the pass does he get a DQ(?), while other athletes were given a pass on the DQ?

Really curious situation.

This is where the officials need to apply some common sense IMO. If you are blocked from completing a pass, you should be given grace on the passing time limit (assuming you are not milking it to gain an advantage). Getting stuck behind slower riders is not an advantage (having been in that situation....it's frustrating as hell). The rules were not written to take into account the complexities of multiple riders (ex. Sam's penalty a few races back while getting passed while passing).

In this scenario, the draft radar thing that athletes put on their bikes would also result in a penalty right? Or in other words if that hardware got installed in races like this wouldn't you still be down to random spot judgement enforcement?

Cyclist tries to make a pass and is blocked. How do you decide if they should get a penalty or not?

Cyclist enters draft zone and backs out for reasons of road safety or what have you.

Cyclist enters and leaves draft zone because they cant physically complete a pass.

Cyclist drafts intentionally.

Without a moto on the group when this happens how would race ranger help?

Someone is just looking at data and assigning penalties back at race day hq or whatever. Point being, it seems that there's a lot of complaints about random drafting situations that can be argued. With race ranger, you likely get penalized no matter what right?

How does this stuff get better? You can't say, "have perfect officials who don't make mistakes" as thats just not possible. It might very well be true that they could have made 30 mistakes that event but wisdom prevailed and they only made this single alleged error (everyone in prison is innocent right?) and here we are saying it's unacceptable.

So isn't the solution not drafting tech or perfect officials, but an appeals process to be made? Each athlete gets 1 appeal per event. Win the appeal and your penalty is waived. Lose the appeal and your penalty stands, plus perhaps an additional penalty that carries over to discourage frequently appealing. But how do you adjudicate the appeal while the race is going on? Allow them to continue race and then assess penalties afterwards? Or mic the racers helmets and let them converse with hq? That could be fascinating for the broadcast potential both the appeals dialogue patching them into the broad cast for occasional commentary. Would definitely put the athletes front and center.

curious for sure. however we have differing reports of what was said in the briefing about crossing the center line. without clarity on the actual rules in place we're only speculating. seems like if in doubt normal road rules are reasonable.

regardless, it does seem harsh for Sam A to be penalised when he was being held up rather than getting an advantage. poor course design/planning really to create this situation in the first place. maybe some better behaviour from the AGers would have removed the issue too

No consistent or significant track record. They've produced what, 5 races? And some of them have been a mess.
