FBI spy catcher gets caught

"One of the top FBI's Russian spy catcher is indicted: The charges against McGonigal alarmed his former colleagues in part because of his depth of knowledge of so many elements of U.S. espionage. McGonigal was an expert on Russian intelligence activities targeting the United States, as well as U.S. efforts to recruit Russian spies, said several former intelligence officials who worked with him and spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe sensitive matters.

McGonigal has not been charged with espionage, but the former officials who worked with him said his knowledge and experience would have put him at high risk of being recruited by a foreign government.

One former official noted that McGonigal was in charge of an investigation into why numerous individuals in China who were spying for the United States were arrested and taken out of commission. As part of that investigation, McGonigal would have known details about the covert systems that the CIA used to communicate with its agents, the former official said. Those systems are believed to have played a central role in exposing the agents to government authorities."

You'd think this would get a little more traction around here.

Can't read (paywall), but this guy committed treason for just $200,000 ??

He must have been desperate. Sure, it's money, but what can you really buy these days for $200k ?

Article is behind a paywall. I'm unclear if he was caught, so to speak, or is simply being charged for openly engaging in illegal activity. He was working to get a Russian Oligarch taken off the sanctions list, right? I suppose he could have been doing that through intermediaries or behind the scenes but seems like he might have needed to put himself out there to get that accomplished?

Not sure what distinction you're trying to make here.

All usual caveats about being accused does not mean convicted/proved to have engaged in wrongdoing.

But whether caught or "openly engaged in wrongdoing" - what's the practical difference? Are you saying some things are known to be technically wrong, but everyone looks at it with a wink and lets it go?

This doesn't seem to be that. Sounds like high ranking FBI official received hundreds of thousands of dollars to try to improve an oligarch's situation in re: official US government position on said oligarch. There was an intermediary - oligarch hired pricey law firm, paid law firm a hefty monthly retainer, and a portion of that retainer was sent to FBI employee for his "consulting services" to the law firm.

One layer of obfuscation, which is supporting evidence that FBI official knew it was wrong but didn't want to get caught. But not particularly hard to discern what was going on - again, assuming allegations are true.

The distinction I was wondering about was did he know what he was doing was illegal or did he think it was some grey area. Sounds like he knew it was wrong and was indeed caught.

Yup, you would think that the news that one of the guys who was supposedly investigating Trump's links to Russia was actually getting paid by Russia to get sanctions on rich Russians lifted would be bigger news.

Ah, gotcha. Yes, reporting I’ve read makes it seem like he probably knew what he was doing wasn’t all aboveboard.

But - news networks get the early details wrong sometimes. So I’m willing to wait to see if more detail/nuance comes out. Initial fact pattern doesn’t look great to me though.

Unbelievable. The agent in charge that leaked SDNY information to Giuliani. Caused Comey to announce the reopening of the investigation of Hillary 11 days before the election. Handing the election to Trump. Was working for Russia. The same guys Manafort worked for. Putin helped elect Trump and there is proof of collusion everywhere. Even in the Senate report. Yet the story doesn't last a day in the Media. This sure seems like a serious national security problem the media is trying to brush off.

I don't know about the media brushing it off. He was arraigned just yesterday and there is a lot yet to discover. They are sorting just how much damage was done while he was on the FBI payroll. This has the potential to be on the level of an Aldrch ames and Robert Hannsen public servants gone over to the dark side moment

From what I have seen it appears he was in the DC field office, not the New York field office around when the Hillary stories leaked.

Of course we should fucking know who leaked the Hillary stuff. How is this too fucking hard for the Federal Bureau of Investigations to figure out? This was a huge deal that arguably changed a presidential election and apparently the person that did it was unknown? We don’t even know the names of the agents that had anti Hillary tweets in that office, but we know the names of agents that sent anti trump tweets, but were not part of any leaking!
