I can understand that. I read the story and it broke my heart. I don't tell my wife about incidents I see on the internet where children are hurt or killed because it upsets her too much. Nothing wrong with being overly sympathetic.

Yes, by all means let's sanitize the reality of what happened to avoid offending people's sensitivities.

I guess in order to avoid sanitizing the reality, we should all see the explicit photos of the dead bodies whenever there is a shooting.

I know this is far afield from the tragedy, but I’ll never understand why people are so black and white. We go from stating the actual facts in a thread title to “well why don’t we show the dead bodies”. People do the same thing with mask policy “I’m not gonna stay isolated forever”. I’m not sure why people refuse to acknowledge that there is a middle ground. In anything.

In a little happier news about the goodness of people, the family go fund me is at $2.1 M this morning.

Not having a go, but how would suggest it be titled otherwise? Would a softer title still have you open the thread and if so, could it not have gone the other way; lulling you in then shocking you?

I would think the impact to you doesn’t change other than perhaps delay the revolt by a few mins?

My eldest child was in kindergarten during Sandy Hook. We have had school threats multiple times each year for the past 5 years. A synagogue less than 4 blocks from us was attacked by a gun man. I was nervous going to a fireworks show at our high school football field, even though I knew we had extra security. The gun violence keeps getting closer and closer, right? It feels inevitable that it will affect each of us personally.

I don’t know why I write this post. It’s piling on for no good purpose. I ranted about handcuffs for a long time in the 60-shots-to-a-fleeing-suspect thread. I saw a lot of piling on in the 10-year-old-rape-case thread when Barry posted. What’s the point of piling on?

Complaining about gun violence or injustice seems to get us nowhere. So we complain about something else?

Everyone grieves in their own way, and we should make allowances for people when they are confronted with bad news. So, I’m sorry you saw this headline this morning and it made you feel bad. The news about that toddler makes me feel bad too.

The first line of his post would have been a great substitute: "the cost of American gun culture" or whatever it was. He could have even included a warning about the contents.

I dunno. I've said my piece. I don't see the benefit of posting what he did other then to perpetuate the shock and awe culture of modern journalism to get eyes-on stories. Apparently others disagree. We just had a crazy shooting in my town, and I have a young kid so maybe it's all just hitting close to home but I really don't see the point in bludgeoning people over the head with that headline. Again it just strikes me as tragedy porn. To each their own. Hopefully the OP will at least thoughtfully consider this perspective.

I blame video games in part.

The constant theme of shooting and killing, in my opinion, can desensitize the reality of it.

Unrelated to that thought, a coworker bought an assault rifle. When I asked why, he said just to take to the range.

Our new house is about 3 miles from a gun range. I hear assault rifles all the time. When purchased, we had no idea about the gun range.

If you're target shooting, isn't it more challenging to use a rifle than an assault gun? Might as well have hand grenades readily available.

I hear what you’re saying and I’m sympathetic to where it comes from. I don’t necessarily agree with it but I appreciate that everyone processes this never ending tragedy in their own way and time.

Anyone piling on here needs to find a better way to spend their time and show some compassion for the other victims in this nonsense, which is pretty much all of us.

To be fair, bigger boom is more fun. If it was all about the challenge of hitting the target all target shooting would be done with light guns and air guns. There is no doubt that touching off a .58 muzzle loader gives more of a thrill than shooting a .22 short out of a small rifle. It is along the same lines as why motorcycle riders tend to go fast.

Of course that has nothing to do with whether or not it justifies being able to buy a higher powered large ammo capacity weapon.
