Jake "The Snake" Tapper Brutalizes Broward County Sheriff in CNN Interview
Quote | Reply
If there were a mercy rule when it came to TV interviews, it would have doubtless been invoked during CNN's State of the Union interview of Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel by Jake Tapper.

Israel and his department have been coming under increasing criticism for their handling of the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in which 17 students and staff were killed by a 19-year-old former student who'd frequently interacted with Israel's deputies, as well as the school's resource officer (a deputy as well), over the last few years. Additionally, the department's initial handling of the shooting, one in which at least FOUR sheriff's deputies never entered the school, all while the shooter freely roamed the halls, firing at will at anyone he could, is turning into a serious matter. The shooter, a clearly disturbed individual, later escaped by mingling with other students as they fled the scene.

In the aftermath, Israel blamed everyone and anything he could find, including what he called a lack of law enforcement resources, for the shooting. But that assertion is seeming increasingly weak as the days go on and more is known about his own department's role in the lead-up to the horrible tragedy.

Tapper -- who last week hosted a CNN town hall dealing with the shooting and in which Israel participated -- wasn't about to let Israel off the hook, either. He peppered the sheriff with questions, including whether he knew about his deputies taking cover behind their cars and never entering the school. Really, the interview became more like a waterboarding session than your run-of-the-mill question-and-answer session, and Jake The Snake wouldn't let Israel establish any sort of exculpatory narrative.

Sort of off topic, but what's up with the Sheriff's four stars on the collar of his shirt? Is he sort of a 4-star general/admiral?

A lot of sheriffs and police chiefs give themselves a kind of four star rank, for some reason.

From what I remember from my criminal justice and homeland security studies, most police departments are organized along paramilitary lines anyway, so it would make sense to borrow from a military specific rank structure.

Watched it live earlier and remarked to my wife that Tapper went after the guy hard and didn't let up.
Israel came across as clueless on what had gone on under his supposed "watch" and did himself no favours with this appearance.

I'm sorry but he doesn't seem all that bright. If I were living in Broward I'd be fucking incensed that this idiot is running the county sherifs office. He should be gone, like yesterday.

What an absolute shitshow this is, beyond tragic that there were so many warning signs and no one acted on this. For anyone following along with the Jonathan Martin story, ex-NFL player who was just arrested after posting troubling stuff on Instagram, that is the way you respond to warning signs like this. Should've been a non-event with a troubled kid who showed he was a potential threat, and even the response itself was pathetic. Just all around a total shitshow and Israel should be the very first person who gets replaced, these are issues that start at the top.

I clicked on the Wiki link to the Broward County Sheriff's Office. I was thinking along the lines of Sheriff Andy and Barney Fife, but it's a big operation. Sheriff Israel might be in over his head, but it's a big job.

"The Sheriff's Office is composed of 5,800 employees,[5] including approximately 2,800 certified deputies and approximately 600 firefighters.[3] The BSO budget is approximately $700 million annually."

Here's their "rank structure".

Sheriff

Undersheriff

Colonel

Lieutenant Colonel

Major

Captain

Lieutenant

Sergeant

Detective
Deputy

"Waterboarding?" Looks to me like Jake Tapper was undertaking a good piece of journalism.

A good example of why we need a strong, independent media.

Oh, he waterboarded Israel. I almost began to feel sorry for that sheriff. Almost. ;-)

I was with him until he went into politician mode, talking about his great leadership.

There are questions that need answers, and from his responses, I think he did a reasonably good job of providing what he could, in the appropriate manner, when he could, and kept his mouth shut about ongoing internal investigations.

His response to the question about letting medical personnel in was exactly right. It's not what people want to hear, but unless your a TEMS (SWAT) Medic, as was I for nearly a decade, operating with a SWAT unit, you don't go into a hot zone and risk becoming a victim yourself. No command structure would allow it.

I want to know more about what those 18 calls entailed, and how they were processed. There was, it seems, a tidal wave of red flags with this lunatic, and we need to know why nothing meaningful was done.

I was struck by the attack on the program that allows conflict resolution with troubled students that stands to keep them out of the legal system. It strikes me that the same people that want "everything done" to fix the gun violence problem are the same people who would advocate for dismantling the "school to prison pipeline."

Given the letter demanding his resignation from the Republican Congressman, and the Sheriff's support for that program and stricter gun laws, I'm guessing he's a Democrat.

it seems there were about 45 calls, in actuality. News has been breaking on that front. As far as his politics goes, he's probably a Democrat. There was talk that Hillary Clinton was going to name him FBI director if she had won the White House.

I watched this chief at the town hall. He reminded me of the worst politicians. Pandering to the crowd, blowing his own horn, deflecting all blame away from himself. Now we know why he was trying to pin everything on the NRA. That even today he insists he's done a great job is mind boggling.
Glad to see CNN finally decided to practice real journalism.

Leaving aside the gratuitous insults from the peanut gallery of folks who can't write with nearly the panache and brilliance that I can (hahahahaha!), the reason I called him "Jake The Snake" is because I have an employee over at my warehouse who was a ramp supervisor for me when I was GM for the American Airlines ground handling contract we had a couple years ago.

His name is Jake and he was a former MMA fighter. Fairly taciturn, to put it mildly, and pretty heavily tattooed. His fighter nickname was "The Snake" and anyone I come across who's named Jake is automatically tagged by me as "The Snake" as well. That's all.

Looks like Broward County sheriff's deputies responded to at least 45 calls involving the school shooter since 2008.

"The number of calls made over the years involving Cruz or his family, according to the call records, are nearly twice the number publicly disclosed by the department.

On Saturday night, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office released a statement pushing back on reports that they had been called more than the 23 incidents released by the department.

“Since 2008, BSO responded to 23 incidents where previous contact was made with the killer or his family,” the sheriff’s office said in its statement. “STOP REPORTING 39; IT’S SIMPLY NOT TRUE.”

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office did not respond to BuzzFeed News’ questions about the additional calls, or how it determined to include the 23 calls that were disclosed to the public, but not the others."

I think Jake had to do this to redeem himself after that cnn train wreck of a town hall . Clearly nothing but an ambush on Dana And Rubio.
Isreal is a complete hack . He's pals with Debbie blab mouth shultz who helped him get elected. The way this guy tried to deflect when Dana was slapping him around at the town hall was pathetic. Almost as pathetic as Jake letting the crowd attempt to drown Dana and Marco out every time they made a point.
Ive got a feeling in the days to come we are gonna learn about some real corrupt shit involving this guy.

I don't follow Tapper all that closely, though I do try to watch and read a variety of media to ensure I'm not falling prey to confirmation bias. Also, I wasn't implying that he was a snake simply because I tagged him with the moniker Jake "The Snake." I'm going to sit down tonight and re-watch the townhall and the Israel interview to see if there was any great difference in how he treated Israel that night versus his interview with him yesterday.

It's no secret that much of the media isn't overly found of the Second Amendment or of gun rights in general, but there are plenty of them that also keep their personal feelings about the matter out of their reportage. I think that if we go looking for offense (something I've been guilty of in the past, believe me :-), we're bound to find it no matter what.

I do agree with you about that sheriff, at least in terms of how the entire lead-up to the shooting -- going back years -- was handled by his department. The shooting itself, at least from my perspective, wasn't handled very well, either, if reports about four of his deputies (including the school resource officer) staying outside while the killing was going on, are true.

It's easy enough for me to say "Those deputies needed to get into the fight," and I freely concede that point. I wasn't there, so who am I to judge? But I say it because I know -- from past experience -- that you have to get into the fight, whether you're personally afraid (no shame in that at all) or not. I'm also probably one of the few people on this thread who's ever had a gun pointed at their face (by a gas station robber, back when I was a gas pump jockey in the summer of my senior year of high school). It's not a fun feeling, I can assure you.

At any rate, Sheriff Israel is still doing the CYA thing big time.

“I gave him a gun. I gave him a badge. I gave him the training,” Sheriff Israel told an NBC6 South Florida reporter in a video interview. “If he didn’t have the heart to go in, that’s not my responsibility.”

Dwight Eisenhower, who also wore a four-star collar device and who had a letter-of-personal-responsibility prepared just in case the D-Day invasion failed, is rolling over in his grave. ;-)

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel refusing to resign telling @nbc6: "I gave him a gun. I gave him a badge. I gave him the training. If he didn’t have the heart to go in, that’s not my responsibility." Clip from our one-on-one interview below. #DouglasHighSchool
