Regarding taking down the pine trees that provide shade. A few years ago I took down a large oak that was on the west side of the house. It was a mistake. That tree provided a lot of shade from the afternoon son. We live on a lake and have a lot of windows facing the west so we can see the lake. After taking down the tree I ended up needing to put up solar screens because of the heat.
That being said, I have taken down pine trees that are within falling distance of the house as they are a hazard and don't provide as much shade as the oak trees. Living in Florida, I didn't want a big pine tree to come down on the house during a hurricane. I did that 15 years ago when I built the house.
This past fall I ran a number of insurance claims in Florida where Hurricane Irma blew trees down on houses. It reminded me that my decision was a good one.
We took an oak down out back when we moved in because it was hanging over the house and I didn't like the way it was leaning toward home. I'd really like to take the pine down because it is right up against the house. Dumps needles all over roof, gutters and now I think what ever got in the attic uses it for a ladder.
It provides shade and some protection from the elements but it falling in a storm worries me. I feel like in big storms pine trees are the first to go down around us. If it was oak or any leaf tree I'd be more hesitant to remove. Not really a fan of pine trees.
