What's kind of interesting is that while chocolate milk is good for replacing calories, there are better protein choices for muscle recovery, if that is what you are after.

The good thing about chocolate milk (low fat variety) is that it's carb to protein ratio is just about perfect for a recovery drink.

"What's kind of interesting is that while chocolate milk is good for replacing calories, there are better protein choices for muscle recovery, if that is what you are after."

both of you make good points! i started using it mid-season this year. i loved how good it is on replacing calories, especially since it's mostly a natural product(the exception being the chocolate flavoring, which isn't a bad thing). i also love that the protein is from an animal source, which means you absorb all of it. however, a 16 oz glass is only 16 grams of protein. 16 grams isn't low by any means, but i'm about 170 lbs, i ride in a decently hilly area, and all my rides are pretty time trial style(I take the high-intensity, low volume approach to training) so I add another 12 grams or so of a high quality protein! Add in a piece of fruit and you still keep a good carb-protein ratio! i'll do the same thing after a hard lift, but with only 8 oz of milk. after running and swimming I'll stick with just the 16 oz of milk.

Best part about choc milk is it is available at nearly any gas station if you forget your preferred recovery brew.

this - usually chocolate milk is ultra pasteurized where all the nutrients are destroyed

Perhaps the most sad moment in triathlon history was when Mirinda and Chris Lieto did a seminar at Coeur D'Alene. About 400 people showed up, then immediately cleared out when they realized it was a 35minute "open discussion" about the benefits of chocolate milk. Actual Q&A:

Spectator: Mirinda! Which type of chocolate milk do you like the best?
Mirinda: Great question! Sometimes I like strawberry, but some days I really like regular chocolate milk
[Spectator gets out notepad, writes it down]

Spectator: Chris, how do you drink your chocolate milk?
Chris Lieto: Well, usually I just have it out of a plastic bottle. You know, like the ones at the gas station. Often I have a jug in my fridge at home and just pour some into a glass.

Spectator: Do you drink chocolate milk, everyday?
Mirinda: Well, sometimes yes. Sometimes no. It just depends on the day.
[Spectators with compression gear on everywhere, nodding heads to each other]

Like this, for 35 minutes.

And it's freaking cheap. Costco selling 2 32oz choc syrup for 6$. I don't go nuts over the quantities I drink, I just drink about 10-12 oz post workouts with 2% or 1% milk.

Well, there are a few downsides to milk

- 75% of adults are lactose intolerant ( from 5% in northern Europe through 71% for Sicily to more than 90% in some African and Asian countries)

- Since November 1993, with FDA approval, Monsanto has been selling recombinant bovine somatotropin (rbST), also called rBGH, to dairy farmers. Which is produced through a genetically engineered E. coli because it increases milk production. Bovine growth hormone also stimulates liver production of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1). Monsanto has stated that both of these compounds are harmless given the levels found in milk and the effects of pasteurization
Cows receiving rBGH supplements may more frequently contract an udder infection known as mastitis. Problems with mastitis have led to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan banning milk from rBST treated cows. Mastitis, among other diseases, may be responsible for the fact that levels of white blood cells in milk vary naturally. In the European Union, rBGH is banned, but it is not banned in the US!

I think we are all well aware of all this stuff, but choose to ignore it, why ???.....Personally, I like Milk,, I'm not lactose intolerant...did I mention I like milk, I put it my coffee, on my cereal, and even drink a straight glass fo the stuff...I have a jug of chocolate milk in my fridge right now (half gone), and I will have a glass when I get back from swimming. Did I mention I like milk ?

there's a downside to just about every recovery option if you look deep enough.

the question is do the benefits outweigh the downside, i say yes

Enjoy the hormones Monsanto is feeding you. There is likely a very good reason why it is banned in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the EU

Yeah, good for you for ridiculing those lunatics who have no idea what they are talking about..

As long as the muscles keep growing and we recover faster, it is good for us and can't be bad.

It is too bad there isn't more independent nutritional research done. There is lots of conflicting information especially about milk since most of the "research" is funded by by dairy advocacy groups. It seems like there is independent research done and it tends to conflict with the dairy propaganda. There is some scary information out there it would be great if there was more research to show conclusively if there is a strong link between dairy consumption and cancer, increased osteoporosis, heart disease etc or if Milk is safe for human consumption.

There is enough propaganda not enough actual science going on. It may have a good protein to carb ratio for recovery but if it killing you through cancer at the same time it might not be a great trade off.
