69.4 degrees at the moment. Well above average and ahead of 'schedule' for this time of year.

It was not a very cold winter + little-to-no snow = warm water.

Temperatures have been well above normal since last Fall...based on previous years temperatures I do not think this swim will be wetsuit legal.

Heading down this weekend-are the nettles in the water yet? If so, I need to practice peeing on myself, instead of just having my wife do it.

Nope. Just a few comb jellies here and there which don't sting - just jelly blobs in the water.

Swam in the choptank last Sunday from the beach where the swim exit is. Perfect temp, a bit choppy, and the swim back to shore included the current pulling me hard to the right. However, this was around 10:30am. When I got there at 7:00am, river looked much more calm.

Looks like it will be close enough for the RD to allow the use of wetsuits, making the swim a miserable slog through chicken soup.

I'll take the speed suit and lose 30 seconds. I'd rather not overheat like I did in 2008, that was not pretty at all.

hmmmmmmm
its 76 degrees this morning. the weather calls for periodic rains during this week. the rains are coming down from the north, as opposed to warm-water storms coming up.
that doesn't bode well for those who don't want suits.
friday and saturday are supposed to be sunny and clear, 80 degrees. that does bode well. it will be close.

Agree with you here. Scattered rain all week for the forecast could really drop the temps. I guess the swimmers will have to hope for 4-6 foot swells to negate the potential for wearing wet suits... ;)

I don't think he will fudge numbers...I know 2010 the RD said on Saturday that race would be wetsuit legal, then sunday morning made the accounement that temperatures rose and the race would not be wetsuit legal. Either way it will be close, but I am hoping the rain doesn't come and the water temps say high!

I won't be hoping for swells. If the water is 76 degrees and we're all wearing wetsuits, my hope will be that no one dies.

well, a lot of people got into triathlon for weight loss. wearing 5mm of neoprene in 76 degree water should get that done for you.

At least they will be floating and easier to find after.

Too far. This is one thing even I don't joke about, and I joke about everything.
Your not kidding. I remember putting my suit on in 2008 and I was sweating like a pig. I was severely dehydrated before I even got in the water to swim. Not a good situation. Hence my comment about wearing my leopard print banana hammock sans wetsuit.
