I think what you say makes sense. You are getting some hydration on top of the digestion benefits. No scientific data to back it up but it seems logical.

is your hydration level the same if you eat a gel and drink the reccomended amout of water as it would be if you skipped both the gel and the water. I would assume the answer is no, the water is acting both as a vehicle for absorbing the gel and hydrating you at the same time.....but possibly to a lesser extent.
Correct, the answer is no ... think about it this way. Adding the gel with water is like mixing a homemade version of a fluid replacement drink (of sorts) in your stomach ... water w/ a gel serves the purpose of calories & hydration. One of the reasons i wouldn't advise a gel & fluid replacment together is it makes the fluids in your stomach quite concentrated and difficult to absorb.
