Hi all,
I know this subject has been talked about somewhat in the past, but I have a more specific question. I bought a new Zipp 808 rear wheel this year and the wheel/tire combo is (edit...see later posts) obviously severely out of balance. When I spin the cranks on the stand, the bike wants to fly off the stand it's bouncing so much. I tried contacting Zipp directly and they've ignored my 2 e-mails, so I'm trying here also. In order to balance the wheel, it takes the addition of what seems like a lot of weight (something I was hoping to avoid since I paid large sums of money to keep my bike light). My question is, how important is it to remove this imbalance? Does anybody know for sure (i.e. scientific data) that indicates that it results in decreased efficiency and therefore decreased speed on the road at a given power output. I'm not worried about high speed wobble, as since it's the rear wheel, I've never had an issue with that. My front 404 is perfectly balanced. I'm racing in Kona on this wheel and need to know how important it is to get this fixed before I leave.
Thanks in advance for the input!
