Now, your semi-joking part deux and trois threads have raised a serious point. All these athletes that have have longevity at the Apex of their events in the Olympic arena are obcure to the point that you needed to actively search for them. Should we therefore add celebrity profile to their acheivements in some way? After all that is a sign of their "greatness".

A commonly cited quality is an athlete who has transcended their sport. I would argue that neither Redgrave or Phelps have done so. Wrong sport probably !!

In that case Muhammed Ali should be considered.

Only if he can prove he won a medal.
(Oh he threw it in a river ? damn).
You'd have to limit this to a Olympic context rather than sport in general. If you did that Ali would be near (or at) the top.

I have been following these threads with a bit of a laugh since I think Francois is right, we really don't have a "greatest" definition worth anything, but I would proffer performance under adversity as another criteria, with Shun Fujimoto being my personal candidate. 1976 Montreal, broke his knee during floor routine in the team men's gymnastics - went on to finish out for the team with a 9.5 on pommel, and more incredibly a 9.7 to win the gold for the team on rings, with a double back, double twist dismount from about 9 feet in the air .... onto a broken kneecap ... and stuck the landing! To know that much pain is coming your way - it was truly exceptional to see.
Now back to your regularly scheduled inanity.

Absolutely, but that is the prime example of an athlete transending their sport.

Jim, I have been enjoying these threads too as (naturally) everyone has different criteria which they apply to any "greatest" poll/question.
Fijimoto's preformance was incredible under those circumstances, but that's enough agreement, I have to go back to regularly being inane :-p

We've gone from Phelps, to other Americans, to (golly!) non-Americans, to ancient Greeks. Someone has to figure out a way to work Chuck Norris in here, somehow.
Keep it pithy, please.

I am definitely not qualified to be pithy, but...
When the Olympics become meaningful, they'll be called the Chuck Norris Games. Chuck will personally round house kick the last place finisher in each event.
Sorry.
