Anyone have experience with Rick Niles email coaching? I like his approach to age group coaching especially masters (just turned 55!). Don't know about the RPE vr HRM however.
I am also interested on how he does with IM racers (not IM virgins).
I haven't been coached by Rick, but a number of the athletes up here where he lives (northern California) are using him. I know he's coaching several people for ironmans this year. He did take a chronically over-trained friend of mine (and multiple ironman veteran) and coach him to his ironman PR at Canada last year (down to about 11:20 from ~12+ hours, I think); Rick's 'go short and fast' philosophy seems to work well for some people.
He's a nice guy and is very knowledgeable about the sport. I haven't gone to him for coaching because: 1. I'm broke and 2. Overtraining is too much fun.
Best of luck-
