Christian Extremists & Re-Awaken America & Michael Flynn
Quote | Reply
The Christian extremists who would like to hasten the apocalypse are meeting to discuss their plans. I’m pretty sure they would like to see the dollar crash and the destruction of all God’s children with the hope that destruction will bring something better than pain and suffering. I guess they think causing destruction is their ticket to heaven. Seems kinda selfish, imho.

Past Re-Awaken events have featured speakers who have echoed conspiracy theories that Trump has supported, including former national security adviser Michael Flynn, Eric Trump, MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, Overstock.com founder Patrick Byrne, Turning Point USA's Charlie Kirk, and former chief of staff to the Acting Secretary of Defense Kash Patel.

Also included previously in the lineups are Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ), attendees of the U.S. Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021, QAnon influencers, and some of the most prominent anti-vaccine activists in the country.

Are they really extremists when their beliefs are extrapolated literally from Revelations?

People aren't the problem in these situations. It's the religion virus infecting their minds and culture.

But hey, at least when they're raptured they'll take it with them.

Timely since I've been watching/listening to Bart Ehrman's take on Revelations and Jewish apocalypsism of the time. Not surprisingly argues these folks are seriously misinterpreting it :)

This guy is such a motherfucker. He and his "church" can just fall off the face of the earth (as can most of the rest of Mt. Juliet, TN).

In one of Ehrman's talks he says he had a student at Chapel Hill who's parents literally sold the farm in anticipation of one of these apocalyptic dates, which of course didn't turn out to be the end.

Except of course there's much, much less of any of those things today than there has been pretty much since Revelations was written. I guess it's a bit much to expect someone who goes in for this sort of stuff to have a modicum of perspective.

Yes. Just like there are Islamic extremists extrapolating their beliefs from sections of the Quran.

Seems like the essence of being a good religious person is cherry picking the parts to heed those that align with our humanist ideals and ignoring the rest.

I guess that depends on what someone means by "good religious person." I think it probably means putting some intellectual and spiritual effort into understanding all of the teachings, including an understanding of the context in which those teachings were developed and how we can and should apply them to the changing world around us. Kind of the same as I would expect for anyone trying to be a "good historian," or a "good political scientist", or a "good ethicist," etc.

Not really the best example given that Islamists aren’t so much as filling in the blanks with their own sensibilities as they are acting on those passages of the Quran as literally written. I think it takes more creative license to get to a religion of peace from those pages than it does to infer a call to violence.

The radical right Evangelical crazies infer all sorts of Biblical meaning from everyday events, but the template of Revelation exists and it says some pretty wacky shit and it’s not extremist among Christians for a Christian to take those things literally. So I don’t think it’s much of a reach for a Bible believing Christian to read that book and to see evidence of the end of days all around us, to talk about it, hold meetings about it, plan for it, etc.

There really aren't a ton of passages from the Quran that call for violence, and there are plenty that call for peace and conciliation. But that's beside the point.

It is extreme for a modern Christian to look at the world around them and infer that the end of days is here. The way you know is because only a fairly small number of Christians see the world that way. Even most "Evangelicals" don't actually think the world is about to end. Most are able to place today's world in the context of the rest of history to some degree, and not jump to the conclusion that the world is about to end. Sure, you can get there from the writings, but that doesn't mean it's not a fairly extreme interpretation.

If we could make it Tuesday, that’d be great. I’ve got a zoom meeting on Wednesday evening that I’d rather not have to call in for.

We're shooting for Tuesday, but need to make sure the gazebo at the local rec center is available. Punch and cookies for all attendees who show up in time to socialize before the painful end of their earthly existence.

I am not sure how "literally" their beliefs are extrapolated from Revelations. Sure there are people that will come up with some creative connections between Revelations and present day but anyone hearing those can see the leaps of faith being made. I definitely don't recall the Coronovirus being mentioned in Revelation literally.

There are most assuredly fundamental folks and a lot of Southern Baptists that believe the world will end at any moment now, the rapture will come, and the tribulation will begin. They point generally to things, but I suggest even they don't take it too seriously. They aren't selling their homes or cancelling their summer vacations to Europe etc. At least not the folks I know.

As for the OP. I guess I need to start buying some more Gold and Silver to make some money off the year of Jubilee. Shouldn't let a good opportunity go to waste.

I recall seeing a book at my friends parents house sitting in the living room next to their couch. "88 Reasons the Rapture will Happen in 1988" I saw it around 1986 and kind of spooked me for a while. I didn't want to miss 8th grade dances or HS basketball, so I was glad it turned out to be wrong.

The remarkable thing is the guy who wrote that book, a former NASA engineer, wrote more books along the same lines and people kept buying them.

Six years of Catholic schooling and then 6 years of Sunday catechism left me completely clueless about this Book of Revelation. I just wiki'ed it. So life was tough for those guys trying to start up a new faith back in the first century. Seems like we had too many story tellers working their way through interpreting god's will that we be good people and satans opposing efforts to make us bad people.

Looks like the guy outside of Nashville is collecting good coin in the retelling. Enough coin to pay for a once good Irish Catholic boy from Middleton RI to speak.
