IM 70.3 New York Jones Beach. Ask me anything.
So now that it's official, I am starting an ask me anything thread about the race venue.
I am very local to where the race is going to take place, and 90% of my training is there as well.

I'd be happy to answer any questions regarding anything in the area, travel, hotels, and whatever else.
Vlad.

P.S. the race director is AWESOME, puts on a great event, I have done many of his races.

Is Corey the RD? I've volunteered with his company for some races in the past and he is fantastic.

What would you expect for the wind on the bike course. Out and back courses could be interesting to say the least. 😁

most of the time the wind is in one direction north or south (from the beach or to the beach), crosswinds are rare. happens but rare.
usually it's anyone's guess which direction the wind is blowing but you can expect a tailwind at least in one direction (you'll be flying on wantagh parkway with a tailwind),
going back against the wind would be a bit tough. My hope is to catch a tailwind on way back to T2 the day of the race and start the run with fresh legs.

depends on the Weather.. if you get a hot sunny day, look for the onshore breeze to pick up late morning, which may be too late for it to affect most on the bike, save the last southbound leg... so that would be 10-12 out of the south. Otherwise you are dealing with flukey september winds unless a classic fall storm passes through..
assuming a hot sunny day, will be an onshore breeze for the run..

Why do you think IM put this in such close proximity to 70.3 Atlantic City? seems two events right next to each other in terms of date and relatively proximity is going to take away from either one.

I have to stay at the Marriott in Uniondale (next to Islanders old home) 5-10x/yr as my company has a subsidiary in Great Neck and another in Rockville Centre I have to visit frequently. Is that the best Marriott option for race weekend?

Super stoked about this race. Will one side of Wantagh Parkway remain open for traffic or will both north and southbound lanes be closed?

The swim is in Zach's Bay, a small bay on the back side of the island, not the ocean. There has been a small swim/run race there for years at the same time, where wetsuits are allowed but most years it's probably over the limit. I guess that race is now gone.

For places to stay, the Marriott in Uniondale is probably closest, but the hotels at Kennedy airport aren't far away and they are an easy drive on a weekend morning. Also, check for VRBO's in Long Beach. It's very close and a good place to stay.

This race has me wishing I wasn't a has-been. I still run and swim, and I've been doing that JCC Swim/Run most years, but my days on the bike are over. Good luck everyone, this is going to be a great race!

I always love those comments. If the events actually drew, WTC wouldn't be able to kill them off. MightyMan didn't even have 70 people finish the 1/2 last year. It's already dead.

It's really a small window for Jones Beach. You're not getting over there before Labor Day or maybe the next weekend. Then you have to get in before the water is too warm and the air is too cold. They didn't have much choice about the date.

If the bike course takes in the Meadowbrook up to the Southern State Pkwy and all of the
Ocean Pkwy, it could be a wickedly fast one lap course for riding a disc in the wind!

I suspect the timing and location means AC won't be renewed beyond it's current contract. WTC's now slightly oversaturated in the market for that time of year.

Note: pure speculation on my part. Zero information beyond gut feeling.

Toughman only had 125 in the 1/2 distance and Westchester doesn't even offer one. Not sure how WTC can be accused of killing an event that doesn't even exist.

That’s interesting. What’s the hunch based on?AC is great for a lot of reasons; accessible logistics, other stuff to do, novice friendly swim and I like running on the boardwalk. I won’t argue with anyone that thinks the bike on the partially open highway is less than ideal. But for a newer athlete, it’s a great first 1/2.

Jones beach might be a slightly better race location for the bike (if it’s really all closed) but LI for anyone not on the island is a PITA and will have less to do in the immediate area. I agree NYC is great but that’s like saying do eagleman and then go to the Smithsonian.

I just don't think that they're going to keep an East Coast calendar as saturated as they are. You've got Mont Tremblant, AC, Maryland, Jones Beach all in a five week stretch right now.

Factor that against somewhat challenging logistics (and I'd assume cost) regarding both Bader Field, the AC Expressway, and the Boardwalk, and I wouldn't be shocked to see movement on that front after 2023.

I think Jones Beach will blow AC out of the water. Also it will be !extremely! spectator friendly.

You could stay in Long Beach and take the A train to Penn Station, it takes about 45 minutes. You could stay in Times Sq and rent a car on race day morning and drive to Jones Beach in a half hour. If I remember correctly, any hotels around Eagleman at at least 20 minutes away from the race.

But that's not the reason to be excited about this race. Jones Beach is a beautiful place and the course they've laid out is going to be fast and fun, and the views on the run will keep you going.

This is something that the triathletes in the area have been waiting a long time for. This is going to be a great hometown race!

I'll be there handing you all your water!

I know. But this will be the only real turnaround for the whole race, the rest is straight up and fast. Comparing to other races, no cars on the road, this ain't so bad.

The reality is that those events don’t draw because they aren’t WTC events. There’s plenty of examples were an independent race like MightyMan might draw 250, gets purchased and rebranded by WTC and then draws 2500 the next year.

Westchester is an Olympic & one of the bigger AG races out there -- it's back this year after covid shut it down the last few years. If you can't see what IM is doing idk what to tell you. They put 70.3 MA right next to a longstanding, locally owned/operated, race. They do this everywhere. IM still does plenty of good. I don't think it's controversial to point out that this is a part of their business model. Not sure I understand what would drive someone to defend it.

I think the reason they did this is that there is no way to turnaround and use the SB lanes for the return trip. I think it's great that they are giving the whole roadway to the race. I'd have thought they would do similar to the NY Tri that used the pallisades and only close the road in one direction. So they loop you over to the southbound side, have you continue north for a mile, turnaround and head south..
the exit ramp for OCR will be the biggest "climb" on the course.

I think of it like the hudson in the NY Tri a few years back, all are tidal estuaries that get flushed out 2x a day with tides, plus you are 4 weeks past prime boating season in late september..

I don't know how responsible boaters are with their bi-waste, but Zachs Bay, where they all anchor on nice days and for the concerts, with the other boats around, doesn't seem like the most likely place for them to pump out their crap tanks. They only have to go about a mile to be in the open water of the L I Sound to do their dirty deeds.

I've never swam at that end of Zach's bay by the amphitheater, but I've swam at Tobay beach in the center and there's always a current, in or out and it's never seemed dirty or smelly.

But even with that, triathletes have been swimming in some of the crummiest water that race directors could find since the sport was invented. Triathlon was founded at Fiesta Island in San Diego. Before the found it, Fiesta was an industial waste dump.

Don't even mention the Hudson, it's a super-fund site. When the open water swim races in NYC were cancelled because of sewage run-off, NYC Triathlon went on. We've all swam in bed, dirty water. Zach's bay will not be one of those places.

Did you get a priority email from IM? I normally get these but didn't get a priority reg. email for this event. Last one I got was for IMAZ this past Nov. Wondering if I'm off the list. I did make AWA from the two 70.3s I did this year.

How is the pavement? I remember the roads to be in pretty terrible shape in the area but that was almost a decade ago.

Toughman is a great race, done it a few times. The one thing I never liked I that you can never go into lake Welch after the race.

I just saw on the FB ads that they are saying that riding this closed bike course will be a "once in a lifetime opportunity". What does that mean? Is it just a one-year event? Or was it just a figure of speech. For me this event would be perfect in 2024. Do you know if they have a 3 or more year contract?

Wantagh parkway is fine with some newly repaved areas, I drive on it almost daily, and no obvious potholes. If there are some potholes, I would venture a bet that they will be taken care of come raceday.

Think you need to work on your geography a bit... LI Sound is on the north side of LI, only way a boat is getting there is on a trailer for 15+ miles or going around montauk or through NYC. The bigger body of water is South Oyster Bay, and if you snake around to the west you get to the Atlantic ocean via Jones Inlet.

The Tidal range on Zachs Bay is about 2' that is a lot of volume of water flushing in and out of the various inlets between the barrier beach islands 2x a day.. Right now the last concert at JBT is on the 17th, so we should be safe.. 13 flushes of the tidal system between then and race day.

Yeah, I must have had a a brain fart there, but the point is that the water is going to be pretty clean.

Thinking about this one. You guys think this will sell out any time soon? Will it sell out even closer to summer time? Considering this but don't want to commit this early.

I also think it will sell out. There are a lot of racers around here who must be thrilled to have this race so close to home.

Did anyone here run the Long Beach Snowflake Run yesterday? It was postponed from Saturday and it was much warmer, but the wind ripped my legs off!

Looks to be a boardwalk run. How does everyone feel about running on boards? Long ago I did a race that only had a few miles on a boardwalk and I hated running on the boards, couldn't wait to get off, legs didn't like it at all. Thinking about doing this too, maybe just looking for excuses not to.

I’ve never run on the boardwalk at Jones Beach but I don’t think you have anything to worry about. Someone can correct me, but I think it’s a new composit boardwalk. I’ve run on those old wood boardwalks with the bound/rebound going on and it’s kind of weird. I’ve also run on the modern boards and it’s solid as a rock

Come on out, it’s a beautiful place and it’s going to be a great race!

I didn't pick up on that. Man that could get VERY crowded the second half.

so now that this event has sold out a while ago, with 3800 registered, assuming 3300-3500 show up, what does everyone think the bike course will look like in the section north Of Old Country Road where it is one lane in each direction?
