What goggles do you use? (And what is our poll missing?)
our poll is up on this, as we prepare to "dive into" swim again. i just got back into the poll this week, after a 3mo layoff. so...

Speedo
Aqua Sphere
TYR
ROKA
Swedes
Barracuda
FORM
Zoggs
TheMagic5
Sporti
Phelps

am i missing an important brand? i'm curious about 2 brands. sporti seems to be pretty popular, but i know nothing about this brand. and, "aegend" is, supposedly, amazon's best selling swim goggle. but that goggle has not been once mentioned on our reader forum, which is curious to me.

the last time i polled this, here are the brands registering 1 percent or less:

arena
finis
2XU
sporti

so, i didn't include these, with 1 exception. they may have jumped up since then, and i included sporti because i see them now listed as a high seller at amazon and swim outlet.

That's fine. I just thought a lot of masters swimmers use Finis. I personally find them leak proof, fog proof, and comfortable (almost like Swedes with a bit more padding around eyes) with great visibility. It may be that a lot of my peers in triathlon don't know how good they work and they just go with whatever is marketed to triathletes and Finis does almost nothing in triathlon.

Huub? Popular in the UK at least.

Roka are my favourite, but I also use Huub and Form. I tried to try Magic 5 but after 3 different pairs were sent out to me they still didnt fit so I got a refund. The company was great though.

i got the sense that sporti may be connected with swim outlet. i don't know. it polled 1 percent last time i took this poll. if it still polls at 1 percent then this is remains popularity of this brand among our readers. we'll see.

I selected Speedo, but:
in the pool, I use Sporti Swedes. They're cheap, and they just won't die. I originally used the rubber nose piece, but that broke and I replaced it with the string. I used the spring toggle on the head strap, but finally the spring in the toggle rusted and broke. Now I just tie a square knot in the elastic. Less than 4 bucks, and the same pair has been going since before Covid. In open water, I prefer corrective goggles, and use the Speedo Vanquisher.

Admittedly the swedes take a bit of messing with some days, not something you want on race day. The Vanquishers haven't caused me any grief. I used to use vanquishers in the pool, but to get a bifocal effect, I would buy a plain pair and a corrective pair, then mix and match to get a plain lens for reading my watch and a corrective pair for reading the clock. But with digital clocks I don't need corrective lenses in the pool.

I use the prescription Speedo Vanquish. I have a pair of the Sporti prescription goggles but they aren’t comfortable…not enough cushion on the edges. I think people have similar comments about their comfort on the Swim Outlet website. They were so cheap compared to the Speedos I thought I would give them a try…no luck.

I love the Swedes, such a simple elegant design. I think they must be made from unbreakable plastic b/c they've been dropped and thrown around dozens of times over the past 15 yrs or so. Been using same pair since spring 2007; have had to replace the strap about 3-4 times, and the string once. Every year or so I wash the lenses with mild soap to maintain visibility.

Speedo Swedes here. You get two pairs for half the price of most goggles. (I think they are made by or licensed from Malmsten.)

They aren’t as good/comfortable as their Speedo Swedish model circa 1995 (which had subtle rounded edges instead of the harsh flat edge of the current models, and a silicone nosepiece in two lengths which secured over a post in each goggle- I’m still crying that I didn’t buy a closet-full before they disappeared/discontinued) but they do the job. If only someone made a corrective lens version. Having tried the vanquisher, not sure I can go back to it just for the corrective lens option, but also can’t find anyone making corrective Swedes after an extensive search last week online.

Dan,

Do I recall correctly that you were a TYR Tracer guy due to eye socket depth/shape? I ask because they are what fits me the best, but the most recent iteration doesn't fit quite as well and am wondering what you have found as suitable alternatives base on shape/fit.

Compy is now sold by Water Gear as the Competition I. I have 3 pairs. I’m relieved that those are back in the market. I also use Malmsten Swedish and the various generic copies.

For anyone wondering, Sporti seems to be the “house brand” at swimoutlet for goggles, suits, caps, etc. Generics, if you will. There are several factories that make unbranded copies of those items. Interesting to note that these generic copies are sometimes sold and rebranded by larger companies. Roka is definitely one example: their swedish goggle was made at the generic plant and then rebranded and sold at 3-4x the price of Sporti, Kiefer, and Rise Aquatics.

I don’t see that Malmsten Swedish goggles are being sold at quite the volume as several years ago. There are many generic copies out there. Maybe their patent expired and they are content to step away since they don’t have the economy of scale anymore. Either way, I have a few pairs of Malmsten goggles around, as well as copies from Sporti and Rise Aquatics (obviously made at the same factory and sold under different branding).

That sucks!!! I have never had a goggle work better for me than themagic5. I don't ever take them off in workouts (v nearly every rest interval) and I have about 10 people I know get them on my recommendation. Almost all LOVE them, but one had the same experience as you. I think it's a great idea and for the people who they work for - they are amazing.

But I guess that's like everything else. Did you inquire about a refund? They were great about that for the friend who they didn't work for.

FYI, the Aqua Sphere Eagle are much smaller and also prescription. I use those, and they are wonderful. (Still big by racer standards, but much closer to traditional race goggles.)

I probably could have gotten a refund, but I never asked. They spent a long time trying to get them to work for me, so I gave them the benefit of the doubt.

I like the idea, but I am dubious about its efficacy. The number one thing a facial scan ought to be able to pinpoint is nose bridge width, but yet they send you four different nose pieces to get them to fit right. I am not a believer.

View prescription goggles, lenses for V-500 or VPS-500 from Tusa, available on scuba.com.
They can be a bit hard to locate, but search “corrective lens for Platina swimming goggles”

You buy the goggle part separately for each eye, depending on prescription. Mine is -2.0 for both eyes. Then you connect them to the nose piece and straps. Very good quality, nice seal around the eyes, a complete set costs about $18, and I go through about two pairs a year.

Swedes here, but curiously, why are you looking at “brand”? Shape is far more relevant, IMO.

For example, I voted for Swedes, but I don’t currently own any Malmsten original Swedes. They’re either TYR socket rockets or Speedo branded in the Swede style. (Although to be really pedantic the Speedo branded Swedes are actually Malmstens with a Speedo logo, but that’s another matter)

And I haven’t been able to swim since early 2020. I really need to get back in the water…

Poll could have 2 questions.. what people use for training, and what they use for racing. I know for me this is quite different.

I use cheap Sporti's for training. At 7$ I don't think twice to replace them when I am not satisfied with their anti-fogging performance or when the nose clip starts yellowing.

For racing I use Roka R1 - work well for me (visibility, sealing).

I'll second this - I NEVER take them off from the moment into the pool until I get out - I never have had a goggle I could do that with. They are good open water - I am not a pool swimmer but do lots of diving stuff (read as: not a good diver haha) and they stay put. Favorite goggles ever.

I was going to chime in and ask a similar question. I've tried a ton of goggles from cheap to expensive, from Swedes, to Magic5 when they first came out, and even Form when they first came out, but it wasn't until I tried "small face" sized/shaped that I found a pair that didn't leak. Those were the Phelps K180. So, I "use" Phelps branded goggles, but really only because that particular shape works for my face.

Maybe Dan is only concerned about the brand as purchase point, and thus shape isn't important, but I've recommended these to many people who also struggled with leaking goggles.

Maybe the mirror version to look "cooler" for races, don't blame me I was a kid back then haha (maybe still vain now)

I am completely new to tri races and I was gonna use the same goggle for my race in June, is that a bad idea?
They are very form fitting goggles that are an inner eye socket fit, I can't imagine them coming off during a race if that is a worry?

It can be a concern, but you'll find the racers who are concerned will wear their normal swim cap, their goggles, then the event latex cap over their goggle straps. The biggest concerns are really if you dive in to start and a fellow competitor accidentally bumping the strap off your head.

If anyone is dying to try the Form goggles, shoot me a PM. I can't get them to fit without leaking and I'm not finding the pacing to be that accurate over a 25 yard pool. I'll send them to you and if you like them you can Venmo me some money, if you don't you can send them back. Form won't take them back because I didn't keep all the packaging, I do have all the important stuff like nose bridges, charger, and storage case. I've probably worn them twice.

I think it probably depends on temps, but yes, I'd say in a wetsuit legal race you see probably 60% silicone then goggles then latex event cap.

20 or 30% goggles then latex event cap, and the rest goggles over the latex.

More goggles over with less mass starts these days, less contact in the water.

I never wear caps except when racing and then often its just goggles then event latex cap. I don't think I have ever finished a race without one or two ears popping out!

I wear Zoggs goggles at the moment - had a pair of Swedes had been wearing for 2 or so years which were perfect but after doing a 10km race they gave me a strange feeling of numbess on my forehead and head for about 6 weeks afterwards. Will probably go back to swedes once the feeling of numbness goes completely away.

sorry for the delay on this. yeah, the tracer was fine. i switched to ROKA's F1, which is not ROKA's most hyped model. but the F1 has multiple bridges, and flows around my nose and sits into my beady deep eye sockets. i like ROKA because it fits, it's comfortable, and then dark amber lens is great. and they're cheap, relatively speaking. i load up when there's a 25% off sale, and i get them for maybe $18 each, something like that. i swim 100 percent of the time outdoors unless i'm traveling, and the dark amber is the lens for that.

I’ve been quite happy with the Aegend goggles from Amazon. My only recent comparison was a few pairs of Xterra’a and the Aegend’s are more comfortable and don’t leak for me. Maybe I don’t know what I’m missing but so far goggles haven’t been an item I’ve struggled with.

here's the weird thing about aegend. until this thread, this brand has never come up on this forum. but amazon says this is the best selling brand of theirs. i think one of those goggles has 50,000 reviews. there seems to be a real bifurcation between goggles used by competitive swimmers, and those used by very recreational swimmers. that's my only takeaway. not trying to throw shade on you! perhaps that's a goggle our folks here need to know about. but it's just an undiscussed goggle here, or has been.

I use the Roka X1. Looks like they recently discontinued. As a 6'5" person, I appreciate the bigger size both for the fit on my face and open water siting. The price has always been great especially taking advantage of regular discount offers.

I was given a pair that of BlueSeventy Element goggles a few years ago. I love them. Super comfortable, durable. Not too bulky. There may be better goggles, but I haven’t found them.

Am I the only one that finds the ROKA R1 goggles very uncomfortable? I am a big fan of that company’s wetsuits and customer service, but the goggles are painful.

our poll is up on this, as we prepare to "dive into" swim again. i just got back into the poll this week, after a 3mo layoff. so...

Speedo
Aqua Sphere
TYR
ROKA
Swedes
Barracuda
FORM
Zoggs
TheMagic5
Sporti
Phelps

am i missing an important brand? i'm curious about 2 brands. sporti seems to be pretty popular, but i know nothing about this brand. and, "aegend" is, supposedly, amazon's best selling swim goggle. but that goggle has not been once mentioned on our reader forum, which is curious to me.

Dan -

I think it would be interesting to cross reference swim ability with goggle. I see trends at the pool, but I'd bet some trends are universal. It's generally accepted that swedes and better swimmers usually trend. But what about the other goggles? Or do athlete's with a run background all trend to the same style? Might be too deep of a data dive though. Just a thought.

I use the sporti swede style....I bought a pair about 5 years ago for $2.50 just to see how some of the competitive swimmers using them could manage without any "padding". As someone with a high bridge on my snout who always had issue with the nose piece I found them perfect...no issues anymore and super comfy...I was shocked and it is all I use now. As an added benefit I can order a few clear pairs, light tint and dark tint for any swim conditions and only spend about $20!

Rule of thumb: if you’re at an open-water race or wave start tri, and a swimmer with Swedish goggles is nearby, it’s a safe bet that swimmer is someone you want to draft off. But also be aware that someone wearing Swedish goggles has been swimming for decades, and knows all the tricks to swimming in groups, from years in crowded lanes, and therefore knows how to shake someone who is drafting.

Swedish goggles are not as prevalent as in years past. Most likely, wearers will be no younger than 35 and will range up to about 52 years old.

A note about Aegend and others sold at Amazon: I think life-long swimmers grew up with swim brands like Speedo, Tyr, arena, so they tend to stick to these. Generic brands like aegend are seen somewhat the same way that runners might consider cheap shoes or “athletic clothing” from big-box stores. Those might be decent items, but somewhat suspect.

Life-long swimmers also tend to buy more inexpensive goggles from the main suppliers. This is mostly bc of the need to have 4-6 pairs around all the time for the volume of practices and the fact that goggles break and get lost.

Why doesn’t TYR make the RaceTech in smoke or Metalized anymore?

The Decathlon top tier goggle is pretty similar to the fastskins. At 35 CAD it was worth trying them. I have been training in Speed Socket 2.0 lately and racing in Arena Cobra Ultra. The Cobra has been the most reliable google for dive starts I have ever used.
