How many tri bikes could you fit in a minivan?
Likely transporting some bikes from Colorado to Galveston for Texas 70.3. Thinking about renting a car rather than driving our Subaru. Considering there's no way I'm getting a rental with a hitch on it for our bike rack, how many tri bikes do you think I could fit in the back of a standard minivan where the seats fold down?

With just the 3rd row down, 2 is easy, maybe 3 easy. If you take out one of the 2nd row seats, 3-4 is easy. I can put 4 mountain bikes in the back of ours with just the 3rd row folded if I take the wheels off then all. But there is some frame touching that could scratch paint.

In the Mini-van
2 behind 3rd seat
1 each in front of 2nd and 3rd seat
1 each on the 2nd and 3rd seat

I also put bags on the 2nd and 3 seats and removed the front wheels.

Hell, I've put 3 bikes in the back seat of my old 2009 Focus but those were pretty small bikes. Bags in the back and drove from Michigan to Florida that way.

How many people are being transported at the same time?

Only need to have the passenger seat clear.

I was also thinking 6 with some creative packing and blankets to keep from rubbing. That would make renting a minivan worth it I think. I could probably do 5 in the Subaru including the 2 bike hitch I have so likely worth it to avoid putting miles on my car.

I affirm jaretj’s post. You should easily be able to pack 6 with protection and both rows folded or gone. Minivans are freakin’ massive on the inside.

Yeah, I have a Chrysler Town and country for my paint business. So much better than a pickup truck it isn't funny. Using it to take a bunch of bikes to StG. 6 I think haha.

Six for sure. I put 7 in my old Plymouth Voyager but newer Chrysler T&C has a little less space.

Also fit five behind front bench seat with wheels off and bikes upside down, with foam sleeping pads between.

I've done 3 in some hatchbacks much smaller than a VW Golf. That included driver and two passengers and all our bags and gear for 5 days away at IM.

If I have one obscure superpower, it's packing very small cars for road trips.

I've done 4 bikes and 4 people.. as others noted, if the middle seats can be taken out, then six bikes should be no problem.
Minivans FTW, can't do that with a SUV (stupid useless vehicle)..

7 in 2019 Dodge Caravan. Folded all the chairs in the back and two people in the car(driver & passenger). I had to take front wheels from two bikes. If I had to, I think 8 or 9 is possible. I used yoga mats, blankets and card board box to prevent from getting scratched. Hope this helps.

Haha, truth. We just sold our Odyssey after 14 years to get a 3-row SUV. The minivan is superior to an SUV in pretty much every measurable way. The only SUV advantage is styling-- they have that edgy look and no longer broadcast the statement that "I am no longer hauling around lots of little kids." I doubt we could get 2 bikes in the back of the SUV with the 3rd row down, and it is a decent sized SUV.

Back in my racing days, I had a 1990 Plymouth Voyager minivan. I was often the "team van" for transporting bikes. For one stage race, I had 12 bikes plus spare wheels in the back (this was the shorter version van, but had the center seats out) for the LaGrande Stage Race. Obviously not a lot of room for extra gear...

Okay, not-a-parent, here. I have to know, why do minivans have more interior room than SUV's? Lower floor with similar ceiling height? Less wall thickness/bulginess?

Pretty much nailed it. It's like they are regular vans, but smaller. ;)

My wife HATES my old minivan (won't ride in it) but even though the kids are almost out of the house - I may upgrade to something nicer...enough room to get changed properly after a workout or race, could sleep in it easily. I love it.

Much higher floor to make room for FWD or AWD transmission, higher ground clearance, and more robust suspension. And similar ceiling height.

Ah, makes sense! I have a fellow overlander buddy who swears that the minivan was the coolest vehicle ever invented. Sounds like he's right.

Yep. Low step-in height. Monster volume-- will hold a 4x8 sheet of wood. Crazy comfortable-- MV captains chars are second to none of any vehicle on the market. Loaded with amazing tech-- at one point, the Odyssey had a built-in vacuum. Sliding side doors are a dream. Amazing fuel efficiency for the size. 3rd row is acceptable for adults.

Enterprise rents Ford Transit 350 vans. You can fit all the bikes in one of those. And they drive like a honda civic. Get a friend that powerlifts to help you remove the seats though.

After renting one of these for 3 years we finally just bought one for trips to the mountains from Florida. 6 family members and six bikes plus all the luggage and a husky to boot fit with room for a large cooler and a cassette toilet.

Assuming enough clearance between the folded-down-seats and the roof, lots. All wheels off. All computers off. All bikes upside down and wrapped in blankets. Put them in alternating one bike pointed left and one bike pointed right until you have just enough room left for the wheels. Wheels also well wrapped. If the van is deep enough, the wheels can go on top of the bikes.

(If you are crossing an international border, take receipts or some way to prove you aren't an international bike thief. Actually, it is good to take proof even if you aren't crossing a border :-)

run well, run happy

There’s not enough poor bike racers, or former poor bike racers, posting on this thread.

6 bikes, in your sleep, with gear bags, easy peazy.

Remove 2nd and 3rd rows. If you’re marathoning the drive, leave a place for the passenger to lie down and catch a few 💤

Old blankets from the back of the closet or goodwill, or if you’re feeling bougie, moving pads/blankets from the local uhaul store.

If rim brakes, use wheels bags to pad between bikes.

Charge people. Seriously. You’re a heck of a lot more convenient than Tri Bike Transport, shipping via Bike Flights, or flying with your bike.

$50 would be a deal and a favor, but $50 (or $100) x’s 4 will cover several tanks of fuel and a couple of Subway stops.

Charge extra if they pee in their wetsuit and don’t rinse it well!!!

If it's just 2 of you look at a cargo minivan like the Nissan NV200, Ford Transit Connect, etc.
