The proportions of the Monolith were 1x4x9 - easy to remember

Cool photo. If created by an artist, did he/she use a helicopter to get it there?

When you look at the video linked in the OP, it looks like the canyon opens up in the other direction (back of the photographer in this shot) and has pretty level ground. Seems possible that it's accessible with offroad vehicles.

If it's hollow inside, it might not be that heavy, so they could Jeep it into the canyon as far as they could, then just carry it the rest of the way [two person job, at most]

Set it up, and sweep away any footprints on the way back

I got into watching some documentaries on art history a few months ago. IIRC, there was a movement in the 70s to build sculptures out in the middle of nowhere, which the US southwest is good for. The guy hosting it drove to some salt flat where an artist had built big spirals out of rocks.

This one? Andy Goldsmith also does some beautiful stuff with rocks and sticks out in the woods. Works on it all day, or days, and then it falls apart.

Maybe. I think it was fairly degraded and was more like just stepping stones remaining at the time the video was shot.

What I find interesting is the way it's fitted into the stone. That stone type is typically very soft but it is a perfect fit so they have to make a square hole for it to fit into. At least I don't see any anchors or anything like that around the base to hold it vertical.

That part of Utah has off road trails all over and lots of slick rock jeep trails where there is no road needed. So certainly feasible to bring it in a vehicle then install.

There have been a few instances over the years of people building sculptures out of driftwood and stones along the Hudson River in NYC

if it happens to be a big name i'd guess James Turrell or Walter de Maria. Of course it could be somebody random who's handy with sheet metal and anchors . . . anyway it's fun and i hope they stay anonymous

They don't say if it was solid, but I think it is or they would have mentioned that???

They also said, they don't want to give the location out as it is not easy access and they don't want a bunch of rescues to have to take place from idiots trying to hike out to it. (ok my words, they didn't call people idiots)

Wonder if it is really heavy, and a pointy end could it have been dropped by helicopter, and just imbedded itself?

Someone stuck a piece of metal in the ground.

And?

What kind of metal is it? I’m guessing aluminum.

Cant understand why this story is getting full media saturation.
