Galveston 70.3 - cancelled, postponed or held on Nov 22 schedule? What do you think?
I'm trying to decide about registering for Galveston 70.3 scheduled for Nov 22.

I was scheduled for the Apr 5 race, which was cancelled. Silly me, I thought the virus would be over by September and selected Augusta (sept. 27) as the substitute race. When Augusta was cancelled, my options didn't include Galveston next month. So, I selected Augusta 2021.

If I race Galveston, I'll have to pay the registration again. I guess if I register now I'll get an option for another event if it's cancelled, but don't really want to pay another registration only to be disappointed.

There's no other cost for me, as I live west of Houston and have friends I can stay with in Galveston.

I'm 90% sure it won't happen based on the recent cancellations and that the Houston Marathon (Jan) is cancelled already (although Houston/Harris County is a lot more strict than Galveston/Galveston County - which seems a lot like Montgomery County).

Without getting into politics, do you think it will happen Nov 22?

Fellow Houstonian here. Iā€™ve given up on 2020, including trying to predict whether events will happen. I now have 4 events for 2020 that have been rolled to 2021 (Galveston, IMTX, Alcatraz, and an XTerra).

BUT if Galveston looks like itā€™s going forward, Iā€™d be willing to go if I can register at the last minute. And I mean the laaaaast minute.

My only concern with the last minute is the additional $100 (assuming it goes to tier 4). Unfortunately no way to know anything - which is the biggest complaint I have with WTC.

Thereā€™s been 0 communication, so still seems very much up in the air. Iā€™m signed up as a deferral from the April date, but hoping to be able to just move it to next year (anyone had success requesting a transfer out of the Nov date??)

There was talk in one of the TX 70.3 Facebook groups that someone spoke with someone with the city of Galveston (a director of special events?) that said the race was officially approved. Others saying thereā€™s a city hall meeting on the 22nd where we may learn more. Also talk of construction on the bike course...no idea if this is still ongoing or the magnitude of it.

Iā€™d at least wait until after that meeting to sign up...Its been in tier 3 forever, so doesnā€™t seem in danger of selling out, assuming theyā€™ve already capped it at a certain number.

Interesting. For some reason I thought that was a full IM. Since this is my first try, I'll have to consider if my training can be cut short by three weeks.

Still no communication from the race. My guess is theyā€™re hopeful since they havenā€™t canceled yet, but I suspect theyā€™re still working on approvals/permits and donā€™t want to confirm that itā€™s happening until thatā€™s all in place. Purely speculation though, donā€™t have any info other than whatā€™s being talked about in one of the unofficial Facebook groups for the race.

If it were me, Iā€™d probably go with the more sure bet this weekend. A month from now is an eternity, and with the way things are trending throughout the country, I would think thereā€™s a decent chance of a close in cancel. Just me though...sorry canā€™t be of more help!

So I'm official registered for Oilman this Sunday.

It's my first triathlon, so, yes, I'm very nervous. Doing my tri at 60 years old is scary! I'm not worried about either specific discipline. I'm worried about doing all of them back to back to back. :0

I posted above that I might sign up at the last minute, and went ahead and registered late last week. I havenā€™t been training for this specific event, so itā€™ll be a show up and do it kind of thing. Iā€™ve been biking and swimming on a regular basis but not too much running.

I think thereā€™s still a decent chance it gets cancelled but I was willing to risk it. Worst case is Iā€™ll roll it over to Waco next year. I already have Galveston 2021 rolled over from this year.

Anyone else registered?

I guess itā€™s full steam ahead with Galveston but this has race week cancellation written all over it. While the most severe COVID situation is on the opposite side of the state in the El Paso area, the rest of Texas isnā€™t doing all that great either with almost 12,000 cases yesterday and a positivity rate at 11%. The saving grace could be the redneck, business first politics of Galveston County. Nevertheless, positivity rates have increased and Galvestonā€™s cases are up 50% from two weeks ago. So not sure what data metrics theyā€™d use to justify approving the race given the supposed policies and protocols in place. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

No chance the race would happen if it was in neighboring Harris County (Houston).

Based on this new calculator out today, in Galveston County, in a group of 1,000 people, there is greater than 99% chance that someone in that group has COVID.

Since I'm not trained and experienced enough to do in three weeks, I did not register.

I couldn't find a 2021 race on the schedule (could be because it won't show until after this race). I would love to have it scheduled around the "normal" time of early April. Do you have a date on your rollover?

Athletes who are sick or have been potentially exposed to an infectious agent must not compete or attend events, as this puts others at risk. As a community, we each have a personal responsibility to protect each other by complying with this rule.

In Texas, especially in Houston area, outdoor gathering of 10 people and more needs approval. Not sure what's going to happen to this race. If it gets cancelled, they might announce it tomorrow like Lubbock. If not, good luck everyone racing. Weather looks great for this weekend.

I not sure that this is true. Iā€™m pretty sure the governor said his statements are recommendations and that each area of the state can decide (by county, I believe). So Harris count can decide what they want, Galveston what they want and Montgomery what they want.

āš ļø URGENT RACE UPDATE āš ļø

We regret to inform you that the 2020 IRONMAN 70.3 Texas triathlon cannot take place on November 22 due to the elevated public safety alert that is in effect for Harris County, in addition to the stay at home orders and recommendations for Dallas, Travis, and other surrounding counties based upon the continued acceleration of COVID-19 infections in Texas. The IRONMAN 70.3 Texas triathlon will now return on April 11, 2021.

All registered athletes of the 2020 IRONMAN 70.3 Texas triathlon will be receiving an email with further information. If you have additional questions or do not receive the email with further information, please contact texas70.3@ironman.com. While we are prevented from holding the event in 2020, we thank our athletes for their understanding at this late juncture and look forward to providing them with an exceptional race experience in the future.

Yesterday I reached out to a contact I have in Galveston and that person stated permits had not been approved as of noon yesterday. That person stated there was logistically no way the race was happening if the permits were not yet approved by that time. That person said that while Galveston County was okay-ish from a COVID perspective, they knew the vast majority of athletes were coming from the Houston, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio areas which are not doing well from a COVID perspective. Ironmanā€™s press release more or less says the same.

I didnā€™t want to post anything here because it was conjecture at that point.

Canceling the race on four days notice is pretty shitty. Sorry for those of you getting hosed here. Ironman knew the state of Texas was having 10,000+ cases per day and that Houston is a problem area. Didnā€™t take Nostradamus to figure this one out.

It would be interesting to know how they decide how long to wait. The three WTC events in Canada this year were cancelled literally months in advance.

Itā€™s probably the worst. The Lubbock cancellation is right up there though. Lubbock was possibly worse because itā€™s in the middle of nowhere and further to drive from the major Texas metro areas than Galveston. Flip side is the Galveston race is far more popular and likely affected way more people. I bet the majority of athletes are just learning about it this morning and probably had hotels/VRBOs/AirBnBs booked for tomorrow. Best of luck getting out of those on one day notice.

I think Puerto Rico 70.3 will hold that title indefinitely (one or two days before, after everyone had already traveled). These last minute cancellations are pretty terrible.

Forgot about that one. Agreed, Eric.

That was the beginning of the pandemic and folks were already there. Way worse since nobody can drive to Puerto Rico. My guess is that almost zero people were flying to race Lubbock or Galveston. That stated, it was easy to see where the data was heading in Texas in late November 2020 than Puerto Rico in the spring. Ironman should have canceled this race a couple of weeks ago at a minimum.

Wow! Maybe not as bad as PR, but WOW!

I really feel for the folks already on their way or already there, and for those packed and ready to leave today.

When they cancelled the early event in April, I defended their position of only allowing reschedules to other events. But really, I see no defense for this late action. Not wanting to cancel until the "last minute" is fine, but the "last minute" in my mind is a week's notice, not four days.

I donā€™t get tested unless I have symptoms. And if I have symptoms I donā€™t go to work. Therefore I donā€™t get tested. Iā€™m pretty sure I wonā€™t spread it since most likely Iā€™ve had it and am immune to it.

At any rate, there is no stopping covid unless vaccine really works. And anyone who is worried about getting it should not be at the race.

But that is all moot since the race is cancelled.

Not a response to you in particular... just a curiosity.

When the M-dot circus rolls into madison for the 70.3 and for the 140.6, the semi trucks show up, their staff is on the ground, and the site prep happens in the week leading up to the race.

So I'm assuming team ironman was full steam ahead on the ground prepping in Galveston this week? Is there a half-finished transition area, registration area, barricades and porta potties and logistical supplies in staging areas etc on the ground right now in Galveston? Or was this just a game of chicken with the city and ironman would have pulled the plug anyways?

I'm wondering if the city had actually issued the permits, logistically, was everything else already in motion to still pull this off? Seems rather expensive thing for team ironman to have to pull the plug this close to the race if they were actually planning to go this weekend.

Good question. I'm over an hour away when there's no traffic, so I don't have any knowledge on that. I suspect the trucks might have been there, but they would not have been able to start any setup without the permits.

Good question. I'm over an hour away when there's no traffic, so I don't have any knowledge on that. I suspect the trucks might have been there, but they would not have been able to start any setup without the permits.

Iā€™m with you on that. I was told there was nothing setup yet. That doesnā€™t mean the trucks werenā€™t somewhere in the area though.

Inside word... it's cancelled

Galveston said it was good to go. What you have here is the Harris County Judge forcing shit to be cancelled. The same type of person that wants to fine people 1K for not wearing a mask when they're also likely unemployed. Harris County judge is also a politician and not a licensed attorney.

No offense but you donā€™t know what youā€™re talking about.

Galveston is not in Harris County. The race comes nowhere near the Harris County border. The race uses none of Harris Countyā€™s resources. Does Galveston County take some cues from its bigger neighbor? Sure. But Harris County doesnā€™t make decisions for Galveston County.

The reason Harris, Dallas, and Travis (where Austin is) Counties were mentioned in their press release was because thatā€™s where all the athletes were coming from. Dallas and Travis counties are four and five hours away. Did their County Judges make the decisions for Galveston too? Everyone loves to pile on the Harris Co. Judge for her decisions but she had fuck all to do with this. Despite your copy and paste from a Facebook page. šŸ™„

Generally speaking I've already talked about mental fatigue of the situation we're in. We're seeing suicide and OD rates continuing to climb compared to a normal year. Outdoor sport is not linked to transmission, so I think race cancellations only harm people.

So would you think this is the first voluntary cancellation by Ironman since clearly Galveston said this is good to go in their comms? But thanks for the geography lesson :)

Yeah, but they mention nothing of Galveston county in that statement. So, my question remains, is this the first voluntary cancellation?

As has been mentioned before, it is not the swimming biking & running to be concerned about during a triathlon. It is the before, the after, & quite frankly T1 & T2.

Pink? Maybe. Maybe not. You decide.

I bet the majority of athletes are just learning about it this morning and probably had hotels/VRBOs/AirBnBs booked for tomorrow. Best of luck getting out of those on one day notice.

That's my problem with this late of a notice. Can't cancel it now and get a refund.

Galveston county didn't approve the permits.

Any idea how far out permits are normally issued for something like this? I would think a go/no go on permits would normally be more conservative.

Not specifically on this event, but I was RD for 5k for 12 years in Ft. Bend county/Sugar Land. Weā€™d get our approval months in advance. I suspect that Galveston was holding off because this was the reschedule of the April event. In any case, I think the city/county has the right to pull permits should they need (weather, health or destruction of infrastructure, just to name a couple).

Iā€™m pretty sure they didnā€™t want to cancel it. Everyone wins when a good event is held..

Not a coach. Not a FOP Tri/swimmer/biker/runner. Barely a MOP AGer.
But I'm learning and making progress.

Well if any is in Galveston the silver lining is that it is beautiful weather and a great place to train. My buddy and I were here for other reasons but plan an open water swim tomorrow and a long run on the beach.

Racing is a bonus and it sucks we donā€™t have it but focus on what we do have which is great weather and good food in Galveston.

Now thereā€™s the finger pointing. Galveston saying IM canceled it. IM saying Galveston didnā€™t approve the race. Good times.

Agreed - I havenā€™t found any good seafood places in Galveston. The closest is a casual poboy place, Shrimp & Stuff, which I highly recommend.

The restaurants in Galveston are pretty run down and outdated, for the most part. The casual stuff is fine if you stick with traditional food like burgers, pizza, etc.

I never found anything spectacular about Galveston. The beaches suck, the Gulf water is awful compared to down near South Padre or further east in Alabama and Florida, the restaurants are meh, the hotels are meh, the attractions are meh, and the place is kind of a dump. Other than all that itā€™s great. šŸ˜

On this I agree. I raced twice at Galveston. It is a great early season race off the trainer and easy to get to if you are flying in since Houston is an easy hub to get to. I would not pick Galveston as a destination to fly to (other better options), but if I was local, its fine for a short getaway.

In any case, this entire scenario sucks for all parties. Cancel at least 9 days out (one Friday before).
