Ostentatious displays of wealth a COVID 4th
Quote | Reply
So fireworks displays here were canceled. People's response.... Hold my beer...my neighbor drove two states over to get some commercial grade fireworks to set off at the field by here. He crushed the competition that would normally be very impressive home displays. Someone else was shooting commercial grade off from I'm guessing their backyard. The neighborhood sounds like what I imagine a suburb of Stalingrad sounded like back in the day just a steady sound of explosions 1 to 3 seconds apart and the occasional huge explosion and flash.

Canada Isn’t invading. We’re building a wall.

We don’t want people from shithole countries getting in.

Here in Ohio sales have been thru the roof because all the public displays were cancelled. Living in downtown Cincinnati last night around 2am either 6 were set off pretty close outside my condo, or someone emptied a revolver, not sure which.

We do, but they use fireworks as weaponry, so, you wouldn't be able to tell if we were invading tonight or not.

Typically my husband and one, maybe two other neighbors set off backyard fireworks. This year when my husband went to purchase fireworks there was nothing left and now we see why. They have been going off in our neighborhood for the last hour and half. We couldn't tell what was from the village fireworks show and what was our neighbors!

We just saw the best fireworks display we’ve ever seen right here in our neighborhood. We live up high on the mountainside and look down on the the valley below. So many people shooting off amazing fireworks for over an hour. Super fun to watch. We had a campfire and just sat and watched. Super fun!

Wonder what the usual injury rate is nationally due to accidents from fireworks on 4th. And what percentage increase will be seen from the cancelling of public events and knock on a amateur hour(s).

Did they put out public notice like “hey guys... health system already struggling a bit... maybe try not to blow your hand/face off, please.”

Amazing fireworks where I live, almost all of them in East Palo Alto. All of them illegal. Folks from all the wealthy enclaves (Palo Alto, Atherton, etc) drove down to get a view of EPA.

I posted a little while ago about the fireworks show in Cheyenne. Sounds like we had a similar experience. It was the best fireworks show I've ever seen.

That has been the question here on the NextDoor app the last two weeks - fireworks or gunshots? At least during this time of year it’s probably 80/20 f/g. Oh, and fireworks are illegal here.

Harsh. I wouldn't throw her out of bed for eating crackers. A mere blink seems worth the effort.

My fave fireworks story.

When I was about 22 my then gf was living in a great apartment on the harbourfront in Kirribilli in Sydney.
One year we had a great new years eve party there.
As the time ticked down to midnight a huge barge was towed up in front of the garden where we were partying.
At midnight they set of a massive fireworks display, all for our benefit. We had no idea why, until about 10 minutes in, when we became aware of a man screaming on the other side of the fence. He eventually climbed over the fence, and ran down to the water to scream at the barge, which was entirely useless given the noise of the fireworks.

It turned out that he was holding a massive party about 500 metres down the harbour, and he had paid (yugely) for our private display. The guy towing the barge had seen our party and assumed he was in the right place. We offered (generously, I thought) to give our benefactor a beer and let him watch from our party, but he was in a very cranky mood. Hey dude, not our fault.

We took the boat out and watched the fireworks. Lots of affluent people here spend thousands on fireworks. Literally truckloads of it. Commercial grade too.

Fireworks over water are the best.

And socially distant too when it is just your family on the boat.

Apparently I'm the only one that gets bored with fireworks after about 2 minutes. My neighborhood sounded like a war zone last night, and it went on for hours. Our 2 dogs generally don't have a huge issue fireworks but they were completely stressed out last night.

Well, ... maybe 1.27 points

Your neighbors? And commercial grade fireworks? Let 'em have at it, they surely are competing for a Darwin award. The gene pool will be better off.

How did you know he rounded the horn to buy in Michigan?

Cause Wisc. is 1 state away. Ohio would be even further. I took a chance he went to the closest state he could legally buy in that was 2 away (I don't know if Wisc has legal fireworks sales)

That, or my drone followed him.. but I wont say which.

You can say you'll cut off China all you want, the American people ain't having it. Celebrating the 4th of July or any other holiday is practically impossible without cheap Chinese products. At least not the way Americans celebrate.

so on next door today people were losing their minds about the fireworks.

Wild animals dying
Dogs and cats running
Soldiers with PTSD having mental breakdowns
"First responders" having to go into burning buildings

Now mind you no one found any dead animals

No one actually lost a pet

No one actually knows a vet with ptsd that was effected (anecdotally the two guys I know who probably have it undiagnosed or just don't talk about the issue live fireworks)

No house fires

But it could have happened

My favorite was a very big defund the police woman going on and on about how illegal fireworks are... she got lit up

I'm good with fireworks til about 11 then i'm contemplating calling the cops if you wake up the baby. No need to last night
