FORM Smart Swim Goggles Announces Open Water
Quote | Reply
Hi Everyone!

Just thought I would introduce myself - my name is Keith and I am part of the Field Marketing Team at Form (and also have been on Slowtwitch for about a year, although I am more of a reader than active poster). I did attend and help out at the Kona Slowtwitch gathering last year though (you may recognize me from the sign-in table!).

It looks like the last time our goggles came up in the forum here was when Lionel started wearing them in his videos, but I just wanted to give everyone the update that we have just announced that open water features will be coming to our goggles later this summer! These features will simply be an update to the existing goggles, so if you already have them you definitely won't be left out. You can learn more at our website here:

https://www.formswim.com/openwater

And here's a youtube video featuring them in open water-mode as well:

https://www.youtube.com/...amp;feature=youtu.be

I'm also happy to answer any questions, either here or via PM.

Thanks!

Awesome!
Mine arrived just prior to lockdown starting so have not been able to use them yet.
Very keen to see what they can do in the open water as well!
Thanks for the update and for making this backwards compatible!

We have to wear a watch to have this functionality? I'll give it some thought and get back to you.

In order to use the GPS features, the goggles will need to be linked to a watch. Our current list of supported watches is: Garmin 945, Fenix 5 Plus, Fenix 6 Pro, or the Apple Watch Series 5/4/3, although our goal is to eventually make this feature available on many other compatible watches.

I will say that for pool swimming, the FORM goggles definitely do not need to be paired to a watch (I come from a competitive swimming background, so I have never wore a watch in the pool even before getting a pair of FORM goggles). Our goggles will automatically (and independently) track and display metrics including splits, stroke rate, stroke count, pace, distance, and heart rate. They can then push this data to a variety of locations for post-swim analysis including our internal FORM app, Strava, and Training Peaks.

For triathlon events for sure (imagine it like using a watch for running or a computer for biking during a race)! For pool swimming events they are not Fina-legal.

You can't really look at your watch during the swim portion.
Has this been officially USAT sanctioned?

I don't believe USAT has an official list of sanctioned devices (the only rule regarding devices I was able to find in their rule book was:

"5.8 Illegal Equipment. Any participants who any time uses wears or carries a headset, radio, headphones, personal audio device, or any other item described in Section 3.4(i) shall be assessed a variable time penalty.").

Generally, bike computers and running GPS watches are allowed, so I don't see any reason that goggles displaying your distance would not be allowed. I will definitely investigate this further for you though and return with a concrete answer (either from one of my colleagues or directly from USAT).

Our goggles are not FINA-approved for pool swimming, and I believe this also applies to OWS events. The following statement is in their rulebook:

"OWS 6.10 No swimmer shall be permitted to use or wear any device which may be an aid to their speed, endurance or buoyancy. Approved swimsuit, goggles, a maximum of two (2) caps, nose clip and earplugs may be used."

The second section sets out exactly what is permitted to be on the swimmers competing and GPS devices are not listed.

For USA Swimming, they have the following statement that would rule out being able to use our goggles:

".1 No swimmer shall be allowed to use or wear any device that may be an aid to his/her speed, endurance, or buoyancy. A maximum of two (2) caps may be used."

For USA Masters Swimming OWS Events, they have the following statement that would rule out being able to use our goggles:

"D Swimmers are not permitted to wear or use any device or substance to help their speed, pace, navigation, buoyancy, or endurance during a swim (such as wetsuits, webbed gloves, fins, snorkels, buoyant armbands, audio players, etc.). Medical identification items may be worn. Any kind of tape on the body or flat armband is not permitted unless approved by the referee. Any devices used to maintain body heat are not permitted, except for those listed in article 303.4.2A"

Wife and I have each a pair of FORM goggles, and we love them for the pool.
Now, being that I can pair mine to my 945 for OWS, that is way cool. Guess I will loan my 945 to the misses when she goes to OWS training.

I’m interested in these goggles.
I have a few questions.

Do they have an internal battery or are they rechargeable what is the charging cycle time?

Can you replace items, like the actual goggle plastic, or bands? I’m wondering about durability, seems I replace my goggles reasonably often as they end up hard to see through and stop fogging.

What is the best way to purchase from Japan and what’s your returns policy?

Thanks

Hi TB2019,

Thanks for your interest in our goggles! So to answer your questions:

Battery: they have a rechargeable battery and you get 16 hours of swimming time per charge. They also fully charge in 45 minutes. This is great for when you forget to charge them before a swim as you can simply plug them in for 10 minutes and still be able to get enough of a charge for a full swim session!

Replaceable Items: all components (gaskets, strap, non-display side lens) are fully replaceable. The only component that isn't replaceable is the display-side lens.

Purchase from Japan: the best way to buy in Japan is through our US website (https://www.formswim.com/). And we have a 45-day fit guarantee - within the first 45 days you can send them back and you will be fully refunded.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

I’ve used FORM for several months, and love the features... particularly the lap counter for long swims! Former sprint freestylers always benefit from feedback to help with “impulse control†early in a set of 10 x 200’s! I’ve been opening my triathlons with an OWS for forty years, and am not sure that I will focus on my pace. There is significant variation in temperature and conditions, and I am getting pretty dialed-in to using HR during my longer pool swims...available with a POLAR add-on. Recently, I have been increasing my long (pool) swim pace by focusing on “relaxing†my stroke, something potentially reflected in HR. Adrenalin is not my friend at the gun... unless its a 50 Free ;-) Easing my HR to a proven level is my strategy out of T1 and T2 as well!

That is awesome to hear and I'm really happy you enjoyed his video! I agree, he did a fantastic job with his review - I'm part of the field team for FORM and I'll definitely be stealing some of his lines to reuse when I'm at events.

And that is perfectly timed for an upgrade to your watch too - open water will be launching later this summer and will immediately be compatible with both the fenix 5 Plus and fenix 6 Pro model lines. Feel free to direct message me if you would like me to confirm compatibility before purchasing your new watch (I've found the fenix series slightly confusing with the number of different models)

I am perfectly comfortable with swearing. I don't do it around my kids too often mostly because I want them to learn to express themselves without resorting to swearing. But the idea that they don't hear swear words, come on, that ship has sailed.

So: you advertise on Practice with Pancakes. Cool. I am glad they have a sponsor. I don't have the demographic data of who watches that, but I assume it is mostly kids. Why the do you have a commercial that ends in "holy shit" playing to a target audience of kids? I am not trying to play "gotcha." I really am asking. It seems weird.

No worries! From Sweden, the best place to buy our goggles currently is directly from our website (https://www.formswim.com/). I believe international shipping to Sweden is usually about $27 USD. Right now we are having a promotion (in conjunction with Lionel Sander's latest video review of our goggles) for $30 USD off the goggles though, which evens out the cost of international shipping!

Hey there!

Got a pair of googles for open water swimming, but am having a hard time figuring out how to best use them now, and since it isn't compatible with my watch, it may be a permanent workaround. I put the goggles into "unknown" pool length to try to just get interval times. Any advice on this?

Thanks,

Meg

Hi Meg!

Thanks for your question, I would be happy to provide some tips for this! That's exactly how we would currently recommend setting your goggles up - with an unknown pool length, you'll be able to have a running timer within your display so you can do interval-type swimming (eg. 5 minutes at pace, 2 minutes easy). If you turn around/stop after each interval, you should be able to reset the timer for your next interval as well (ie. trick your goggles into thinking you turned/rested to trigger a change in display).

The ideal set-up for doing this would be to additionally pair your goggles with a Polar OH1 Heart Rate Pod, as this would allow you to also display your real-time heart rate while you are swimming.

I will say that this won't have to be a permanent work around though, as there will be a mode for open-water swimming specifically designed for users without a compatible watch (that's all I'm allowed to say about that though, the rest you will have to stay tuned until release later this summer!)

Let me know if you have any other questions,
Keith

Hey there!

Just came across this thread and wanted to ask something particular to pool swimming: Do these goggles display pace per 100 in real time or will this pace just be updated when reaching the end of a pool lane?

Thank you :)

Re: FORM Smart Swim Goggles Announces Open Water [CerveloP5-Fan] [ In reply to ]

Hi!

Thanks for your question! The later is correct - currently for pool swimming, the goggles will only update the pace/100m when you reach the end of each length. You could, for example, program the goggles to display your pace/100m from the last 25m as soon as you turn (ie. in the middle of an interval it will update every turn). You can also program the goggles to display your average pace/100m over an entire interval when you are at the wall resting (ie. at the end of each interval).

Currently, the only real-time metric that you can monitor is your heart rate when the goggles are paired with a Polar OH1 monitor.

Although I will say that our design team is always hard at work with updating our algorithms and real time stroke analysis is definitely on their radar!

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Hey Everyone (again!)

Rather than starting a new thread for this, I thought I would just add it to this one. We at Form are hosting a Webinar series! This will be the first one of a number of webinars covering a range of swimming-related topics. The format will be a brief introduction/presentation followed by an opportunity for a Q&A where we will be answering your questions live.

Here's some information about it and you are able to sign up at the link below:

Join the FORM team for the first in what will be an ongoing series featuring an introduction to FORM's groundbreaking technology in swimming. We will highlight how introducing relevant metrics in real time can improve the swim experience and allow you to swim smarter and faster. This webinar will include a live Q&A session where we will answer questions from the audience.
When: July 9th at 10am PST
Webinar Link: https://www.bigmarker.com/...M-Smart-Swim-Goggles

Hope to see some of you there!

Edit: Oh and I forgot to mention that the host for this webinar will be 2-time Olympian (2004, 2012), Scott Dickens! So he definitely knows a thing or two about how to swim fast!!

Hi Keith,
my new Form goggles arrived yesterday; thanks for the discount code. The initial setup / pairing was trouble free. I haven't been able to try it out yet and have a few questions.

1) The limit on the number of data fields is 2? Any plans to expand that to maybe 3 or 4?

2) This one may have some interaction with any watch it's paired with. For the pool, if I have a workout defined is there a way for the goggles to display or step me through it?

3) Can you say if there are any plans for an SDK for this device (roughly similar to what Garmin has done for their devices) ? Alternatively, if I write a new swim data field for a Garmin 945, can I get that displayed on the Form HMD?

4) for your open water functionality, can you say if there will be any displayable data comparing my current location to a defined course (similar to what iolite did)?

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,

Awesome, I'm glad to hear you were able to get set-up trouble free! Here are my answers to your questions (from my understanding of your questions, let me know if I missed anything you were hoping to get answered):

1) Yes, the limit on the number of fields you can see at one time is two - it will always be time on the top of the display (either interval time or rest time) plus another metric of your choosing (shown on the bottom of the display). However, this chosen metric can be varied depending on where you are in the pool (eg. in the middle of the length vs turning at a wall vs resting at a wall). In addition, during the rest screen you are able to cycle through up to 3 metrics along the bottom of the display.

I believe the reason for the display having only two data fields at a time is from our user testing early in product development. With too many data fields being displayed, most users found it to be overwhelming. However, I will take that feedback back to the development team as a potential optional user customization to look into including.

2) Currently, no there is no way to have your goggles step you through a pre-set workout (I'm a paper+ziploc bag guy to bring my workout poolside). However, I will say our design team is always hard at work looking at adding new features.

3) From my knowledge, I don't believe we have plans for an SDK, but I'll double check with the design team if that is something that is on our radar.

4) I can't give too many details about the open water functionality until we officially launch, but I can say this has been a common feature requested by triathletes/open water swimmers (ie. course routing) (and our design team always likes to do their best to try to make user requested features come to life if they can!)

Let me know if you have any other questions!

I bought a pair after watching Lionel and reading this thread.

They arrived fedex in Hong Kong in less than a week and shipping was under ten dollars. Bravo guys. Lots of US companies rape you on the shipping.

Review after one usage:

Mode: Interval
Pool: 25m
Workout 2500m Pyramid Swim 100-200-300 etc with pull buoy. No flip turns because I had recently had PRP and wasn’t pushing off with left leg.
Setup:
Swim: Interval time and interval distance
Turn: Interval time and time/100m this interval
Rest: Rest timer and total distance

First off the gear is high quality as expected with a nice case and lots of nose bridges (Standard fit me)

I can see why Lionel likes them so much - having all the data is really great. Not having to push the rest button on the watch is also super. I worked harder knowing my pace and distance constantly.

It will be an easy choice to always bring them. I think it may the most game changing gadget since Varia Bike rader.

There was one issue I want to see If it repeats. Twice during an interval it reset. I didn’t do anything different it just started a new interval. My turn was the same, not longer.

I imagine this will happen occasionally and here is my suggestion - for the first lap of an interval it only shows time in the interval and no second data field. Make the second data field for the first lap be “last Interval Distance†so if I’m doing a 500m interval and it drops at 175 I can just look and know I have to do 325 more for this interval.

I ran my 945 at the same time to track it and did manual rests so I was able to recover but yeah, that’s annoying.

One thing that worked right is that during rests i sometimes take my goggles up on my forehead and it didn’t start the interval so that was good.

Amusing thing, after a while I had a bunch of pool employees scrutinizing me (this being hong kong and all) and finally at a rest one pointed at me and said “you have camera!!!! Not allowed!!!!†Luckily my coach was there and she straightened things out.

Then I immediately hade 10 junior swim kids around me ages 8-12 who all had to see them and I imagine if you make kid size ones you will have a prestige christmas stocking stuffer this year. They even came up to me in the locker room and said “cool gogglesâ€

Awesome, thanks so much for the great review! We always love hearing back from our customers, especially when they come with a fantastic possible improvement! I will definitely be stealing that feedback and giving it as a suggestion to our product development team (don't worry, I'll give you credit though!).

Regarding it triggering an accidental rest during an interval, this can happen occasionally (especially with touch-turns, I essentially never have it happen with flip turns). I think you may find that over time (as you get more and more familiar with the goggles), you may identify specific movement patterns on the turns that can trigger it and, in turn, specific ways to turn that avoid triggering rest.

And I always enjoy hearing how people set up their "dashboards" for swim/turn/rest. I like your set-up - one thing I'll note just in case you weren't aware, is that you can set up to three metrics to scroll during rest (just seeing that you chose to display one, so wanted to make sure you knew you weren't limited to one there). The turn and swim screens you are limited to just one metric though (plus time).

Also, that is a great story about the comments you got at the pool! You should see the other swimmers reactions when the office heads to our local public pool on Wednesdays for our lunchtime swim session - typically 10 or so of us show up with our goggles and all jump in around the same time (we must look a lot like a group of cyborgs/aliens to people who have never seen our goggles before).

Hi MrRabbit!

Its great to hear you got your pair!

Unfortunately, the reason we don’t support the Forerunner 935 is that despite it supporting ConnectIQ data fields, the 935 currently doesn't allow data fields to use BLE and that’s how our connection between the watch and goggles works.

If I understood correctly, the goggles will show you the average speed each lap in the pool as opposed to a 'real-time' speed? If so, how will this translate to open water?

Its links to your GPS watch

That is correct for the pool mode - for example, if you were doing intervals and flipped at the 25m mark at 15 seconds, it would show your pace/100m as 1:00. If you then flipped at the 50m mark at 32 seconds it would show you one of the following (depending on which one you selected to be able to see in the app):
1. Interval Average Pace per 100: 1:04 /100m
2. Last Length Pace per 100: 1:08 /100m (17 seconds for the second 25m)

For open-water mode, it will use the GPS data from your compatible watch to display your average pace. I believe there will be some customization available for this - for example, a workout-average pace versus more of an instantaneous pace (I'm not allowed to give too many details, but think of the options for your power metrics on a bike or your pace metrics on a run!)

Thanks, this makes it clear! Looking forward to the seeing all the details, and hopefully a broader spectrum of compatible devices down the road.

Hi Chris!

Yup, the webinar will be fully recorded and available after-the-fact if you are unable to attend. If you can fit it into your schedule though, I highly recommend attending live to be able to directly interact with our presenter and ask questions (and get instant answers live).

To help with any confusion-there isn't any open water goggles being released-its a software update to the existing model.

kerikstri please correct me if Im wrong?

Hi dunno

Yup, you are correct. Open water will simply be a software update for the existing goggles. No need to worry if you are already an owner, you'll just be prompted to update in the app once we launch!

Thanks for the clarity check on that too, I just realized that may have been unclear from the original question!

Just wanted to bump this thread again for our Open Water webinar next Thursday at 10am PST. We actually had to upgrade our webinar platform subscription for this one as we reached our old maximum number of registrants... so spots are filling up quick!! Be sure to sign up to listen to 2-time olympic swimmer, Scott Dickens, discuss open-water swimming and how to use our goggles to make your open water training more effective (especially when pools are closed is some places still!). The formal presentation with be about 30 minutes, followed by a Q and A period where we will be answering your questions live.

Wanted to add that I bought these googles when they first came out last year. I am a super fan :). They are still going strong. The app is incredibly clean and groups strokes, intervals and lots of other data seamlessly.

The company is incredibly responsive with top notch customer support. Met some of them at their Kona booth last year and it's obvious that they are passionate about what they are doing.

Hi Everyone!

As promised, huge news today as we officially launch OPEN WATER with FORM Smart Swim Goggles!!!

As of today, you should be prompted to update your FORM app on your phone, update the firmware on your goggles, and the app will take you through pairing your compatible watch. And for Garmin users, please note the following info: https://support.formswim.com/...rticles/360052377913 ... unfortunately their recent issues are still affecting adding in new connectIQ data fields so you are not able to add in the new FORM data field. Definitely still download the new updates on our side though, and I can give you tips on how to best use "goggles-only" mode in the meantime.

Here you can watch Sarah Crowley and I using our goggles in the open water and teasing Lionel Sanders a little bit (always have to bring Lionel into a post since we are on Slowtwitch, right?)

""

Finally, its not too late to sign up for our webinar session tomorrow morning at 10am PST where we talk all things open-water: https://www.bigmarker.com/...-2020-07-23-11-00-am

Based on a tip I got from your tech support, rebooting the watch (in my case a series 5 apple watch) was the key to getting this upgrade to work. The 'track on watch' option for open water got me to a point where even though the watch app said it had GPS and a connection to the goggles, the start button was still greyed out / inactive. After rebooting the watch, that button is now blue and active.

I am considering a pair of these for OWS. DC Rainmaker posted a review of the OWS update yesterday where he talked all things open water and these goggles. One thing he noticed was that the watch and goggles needed to be on the same side as well as the same side you breathe (or bilateral breathing will be necessary) to get accurate data. Can you comment on this?

Also, I wear my watch on my left arm which is also the side I breathe on. Is the nosepiece removable such that I could reverse to the left side of my face? Will the metrics then be displayed upside down or is there a setting change to reorient the data fields. Thanks.

Hi scooter23,

Yup, for sure I can help clear these confusions up!

So, yes, that is correct that the goggle module and watch must be on the same side as well as the same side that you will breath to (either through bilateral breathing or single sided with the watch/goggle/breath all matching). So for someone that likes to breath to the right, we recommend the watch and goggles also be on the right (and the opposite for left breathers). This is so that the goggles and watch maintain a stable connection - the BLE technology that is used for data transfer doesn't maintain as reliable of a connection through water. By having the goggles/watch/breath all on the same side, your arm will be passing by the goggle module everytime you breath which will facilitate the connection (the data transfers perfectly in air!).

And definitely, the goggles are fully reversible and are designed specifically so that the display can be either on the left or right side. The standard out-of-the-box setting is for the right side, but within the settings menu there is an option for left side. As you hinted towards, this simply flips the metrics so they are the correct orientation. Also, the nose bridges are removable (we provide 7 different sizes to fit as much of the population as possible!) And actually, most of the supplied nose bridges are completely symmetrical (other than the 2 high-clearance ones for us that have larger noses).

Hope these help, and let me know if you have any other questions!

My goggles turned up today.

Did all the setup. But when I select the open water swim, and it starts looking for my Garmin Fenix 6 pro, it just keeps looking.

I did the app install and added form to the field.

Turned everything off and on.

Turned the watch on.
Started open water swim
Turned goggles on
Selected open water swim and record on watch not goggles. It begins searching and never finds it.

I am not sure if this has been answered but I have a Garmin Fenix 5S and was curious if I would be able to view my HR through the Form goggles using a Garmin HR strap and the Fenix 5S? It appears that the 5S is not compatible with the Form goggles according to website but I’ve seen conflicting info so wanted to see if anyone could clarify?

Hi BallsJesus,

Unfortunately the Garmin Fenix 5S is not compatible with the FORM goggles as, although the watch supports connectIQ data fields, it doesn't allow for those data fields to transmit information via BLE. Our goggles require the BLE connection to collect data from the watch.

Hope this helps clear things up!

QUESTION - When our pools closed I looked at how I could do TI style swim metrics in OW. Being in Honolulu the ocean is available year round. It's all about time, distance, and stroke count. I have used an FR935 for several years and love it. Never cared much for OW swim data beyond distance and time for long, continuous swims. When I started looking more closely at my Training Peaks data I found I spent a great deal of time swimming so fast I must have been towed by a jet ski. Apparently long, slow data is OK, but something like 4 x 50 with 15 sec rests is useless. The GPS system does not have the required accuracy. When the 945 came out DC Rainmaker had good things to say about swim GPS accuracy. I would like to hear from folks here who have used these goggles with a 945 in OW how useful -- accurate -- the pace and distance display are. Or do you sometimes appear to be pulled by a pod of dolphins?

Well I did my first open water swim today in them. Surprised the display doesn’t infringe on your vision of where you look at all. I had to actually make a decision to see what time or distance I was at.

Pretty good actually.

Start and stop on my watch is cool too. So no stuffing around with the buttons on the goggles.

My only complaint is I’d like the goggles to be slightly bigger.

Overall. I like

Hi Everyone,

I'm back again with another webinar featuring the FORM Smart Swim Goggles - its this Thursday, September 10th at 10am PST (1pm EST) and will be entirely dedicated to questions from you (ie. users/potential users/athletes). We will take any and all swimming or goggles related questions and answer them live during the webinar!

https://www.bigmarker.com/...mcr_source=Instagram

Feel free to comment directly on here or DM me with any questions you would like to see answered. We will be taking questions in advance (and have a small FAQ presentation for these) and then move onto answering live questions during the webinar.

And again, it'll feature 2-time Canadian Olympic Breaststroker, Scott Dickens as the presenter.

Thanks and hope to see you there!

First of all I absolutely love the Goggles, a lot better than I was expecting TBH.

What would be good would be a YouTube clip explaining how to operate the Goggles, how to set up and adjust the various fields etc?

I've had a quick look but not sure how I can set the fields so I just see distance and speed constantly?

I think you do this in the app, there should be a settings option and make sure the goggles are nearby and paired.

Hi dunno,

That's awesome, I'm so glad to hear that you are enjoying your goggles! And thanks for the great feedback, you actually read our minds a bit as we do have plans to launch a series of short FAQ/Tutorial videos really soon. I believe we are in the process of filming/editing them, but we plan on having quick tutorial videos to walk through all things FORM goggles. This will include everything from adjusting your goggles, setting your dashboards, navigating the app, pairing external accessories, etc.

In terms of specifically answering your question though, I can give you a couple tips right now:

Pool Swimming: for pool swimming the display will always have a time-based metric on top (interval running time for the swim screen, interval split time for the turn screen, and rest timer for the rest screen). For your second metric along the bottom of the goggles you are able to fully customize this, but you can only see 1 metric at a time on the swim and turn screens. For you to be able to see distance and speed constantly, I would recommend setting the swim screen to "Last Length - Pace per 100" and the turn screen to "For Current Interval - Distance". This way when you are swimming you can see what pace you were at on the last length and have an update on how far into your interval you are everytime you turn. For the rest screen, you can select up to three metrics to cycle along the bottom and you would also be able to have distance or pace-based metrics shown here.

Open-water Swimming: for open water swimming, if you pair a compatible GPS watch you will be able to get exactly what you want. The top line of the goggles again is a running timer of your whole swim, but along the bottom you can have up to three metrics scrolling - so for your case you would be able to select Distance and Pace per 100 (which is a workout average pace/100).

Hope this clears things up!
