Spectrum sucks A$$! [UPDATED 04/23/19]
Every executive and every asshole responsible for software, firmware, and hardware should be in jail. How these assholes can continue to rob consumers with their high prices and shitty services is beyond me. I thought Time Warner Cable sucked. Well, they look like geniuses now that Spectrum has taken over. Every box in my house "stalls." I turn on the tv and try to change channels or use the Guide and it says "One moment please." It takes 2-3 minutes to come back on. Then, today, I had to unplug and reboot every box in the house. This takes approximately 20 minutes to reset the piece of shit box. Finally, I know I am not getting my 400 mbps internet speed for which I am paying because I have run multiple tests and it keeps showing just under 100 mbps, which was the slower speed under my old Time Warner plan.

Assholes. Crooks. Pieces-of-shit!

No Comcast. I had Direct TV years ago and hated it.

For $10.66/month for two wireless receivers (I don't need the third I could get) and HBO, I think it's pretty good.

:-)

What problems do you have now that AT&T owns DirecTV?

With our move last year, we went to from Spectrum to AT&T fiber. What a difference, and that is not just because of speed. My wife does not have to call and argue pricing with customer service people who don't give a crap, and my kids are not yelling at me because of slow speeds.

Spectrum is so bad that it's actually getting kicked out of NY.

No they are not, look at the date on that article;

The state backed down and just gave them a slap on the wrist and let them keep screwing everybody. All I get from them is internet and I'm now paying almost twice what I was paying to Time/Warner.

JSA, it's the equipement in your house. I had that problem for a while, rebooting all the time. I finally called and asked for new cable box and wireless modem. It solved the problem. They also changed my frequency from the office.

They still kinda are getting kicked out. But, with all of the legalities involved, Spectrum has been given a chance to shape up or get shipped out. So, they've basically been put on probation, again. I'd guess that their future in NY is going to be quite short.

Completely agree. the only spectrum box in my house is on my main TV. thats the only one I dont have issue with. The other 2 that dont have DVR, take 5 - 10 mins of please wait till you can change channel and or access the guide. Also most of the time I have to reboot those boxes everytime to get HBO to work. Thinking about dithching them and taking the $300 gift card offer from direct TV. The only issie I had with them is the signal would be lost if it was cloudy... so that suck as well.

At least with direct tv they had whole home dvr. Time Warner had it as well and I fail to see why Spectrum cant get with the program.

As for internet.. Spectrum has been spot on with my speed. I would rerun your speed test with the internet plugged into your main computer and nothing else. Take your router out of the equation and or shut wifi off. Run speed test again while it is directly plugged into 1 device. When I did it their speed was actually a bit over than what they were to provide so no complaints there.

I wish FIOS would come into my area...

The only time I lose signal with DirecTV is when there is a lot of snow, or an absolutely driving rainstorm. Maybe 2-3 times per year. Certainly cloud cover is never an issue; not sure why you would think otherwise.

My FiOS upload/download speeds are above 80Mbps.

if the problem is the box, then buy your own box

I had a TIVO back when I cut the cord and lived without cable. I recently moved to a building with Comcast/Xfinity included, i hated the "x-1" box (The DVR is frustratingly slow) so I got a cable card and used the TIVO - can be a PITA to set up, but no problems now.

We have had the new boxes for a month. We have 5 boxes. Can they all be bad? It has to be a frequency or signal strength issue. I’ll call this week and ask about the signal. Thanks.

We moved to Southern CA last summer and had to deal w/ Spectrum for internet and TV. Spent a week trying to get it to work with our Tivo. Gave up on that and got their DVR . . . that took another couple weeks and I think it was three different techs coming out before they got it "right". Seems pretty solid since, too damn much money though. If I remember correctly, they had to swap out the box once, and they cleaned up some connections at the input to our house as well as needing to do some work on the box down the street we are connected to. Also needed a handful of phone calls where they flipped some switches or whatever they do to get everything to sync properly. Anyway, I'd say just keep on them to send techs out until it's right . . .a hassle for sure. BTW JSA, after living in WI for 64 years, it's really nice to NOT have to deal with WI winter:)

I've had Spectrum/Charter for...a while. They suck for customer service, but I can't complain about speed or reliability once I got the system up and running. FYI, I'm not a techno-geek; I'm just the dad who is expected to make sure internet connections, Netflix, and Snapchat are operational 24/7/365. This is my N=1 that fixed similar problems to yours.

My latest problems occurred when they recently upgraded our speeds here in northern Michigan. I was having similar issues to yours and it turned out to be my wireless router was too old and too weak. There is something about the new wireless protocols not playing nice with equipment that doesn't use the old protocols that causes issues. There is also issues when you have other people's wireless systems close to yours on the same channel. The modems and routers Spectrum gives folks seem to have a more powerful signal than they did a few short years ago.

To figure this out, I first loaded some free software called NetSpot on a laptop. This software is easy to use and the understand. After firing it up, I could walk around the house and see what networks were detected, their channel, and their strength. That was how I figured out the my neighbor's signal strength was swamping my network. Once I realized my router didn't have the umph needed, it was time to look at routers. I live in a wooded rural neighborhood with plenty of separation between homes, so I can only imagine the kind of problems folks who live in closer proximity must run into!

I upgraded 6 weeks ago to the Asus RT-AC86U router and my problems vanished and my speeds went to what I was expecting. This especially helped with the wireless devices my family was using well away from the router. I did a ton of reading on routers and came away with this router having the best bang for the buck, while somewhat future-proof. This one single equipment changed fixed multiple problems for me.

Good luck.

I would think that becasue that was my experience. I had them come out and adjust my dish several times. The last straw was last years Superb owl. Lost signal in a very minor snow fall... I called their tech support and there solution was to download the NBC app and watch from there... Was not impressed.

I don’t have problems because I dumped both Directv and AT$T wireless after they merged.

AT$T has always had shit customer service and now Directv has followed. I won’t bore you with the details but we went thru a big bait and switch with them during installation that even the technician that was at my house said was bullshit.

I stayed with our cable provider and switched wireless companies the next day.

Either that or have the technician keep coming out until they get it right, but don't keep putting up with the cable company BS. Make them get it right!

One of the keys with getting the through put you're actually paying for (i.e. 100mbps DL) is to have a separate modem and router. That changes everything

Holy shit does this company SUCK! They cannot figure out the issue with the boxes, so, they are sending a tech.

However, in the meantime, they decided to update the software in the boxes. Now, wouldn't you do that in the middle of the night? One would think. Not this company! They did it in the middle of the day on the one day I decide to work from home. The dowload started at 11:00 a.m. and is showing up on every box in the house. It is now 3:18 p.m. and the update is still running. In addition, it seems to be slowing the hell out of my internet making remote access to my work computer very, very slow.

I hate this company. Unreal.

Update 04/23/19: Second tech visit today. What a pain in the ass. Spectrum makes you go through all their online problem solvers before they will send a tech. Had every box in the house reboot. Still did not fix the problem. Even better, the box upstairs started having issues with the guide. I unplugged to reboot and now it will not power on at all. So, the tech comes out this morning. Turns out the signal is too strong. Mind you - I ran all their online trouble-shooting programs and they all came back saying the signal was too weak. So, I bought a booster. Ran the trouble-shooter again and it still said signal too weak. But, that is not the issue. The signal is too strong. Tech pulled the booster. Put in a signal regulator. Replaced 3 of the 5 boxes. We are up and running. We will see how long this lasts.

That is a problem all the cable/satellite services are having. The program providers like HBO and the local channels keep asking for more and more money to provide their signals to the cable and satellite companies. Sooner or later the camel breaks and voila, some of the channels are gone.

Dish lost HBO a few months ago along with some associated channels. The reason was HBO jacked up their prices so much that it was no longer profitable enough to carry that system. One of the local networks (the CW network), jacked up their pricing late in 2018 and was off the Dish local network menu until a few weeks ago when it reappeared. I guess the negotiations finally resulted in an agreeable price after about 6 months of being off the satellite feed.

yes that's it exactly - you need to get a cable capable TIVO box, and a cable card from Spectrum. The cable card has your credentials for the cable company so it can get the cable guide and the signal

although if your signal is that weak as described in a different post, this may not help
