Ah, two great days of riding in the northern Catskills,

Wednesday, 45 miles; Shandaken, Spruceton, Lexington, Hunter, Phoenicia, Shandaken. This is the standard Hunter race loop except for the Spructon add on and it's the easier direction for the loop. It has a bonus 50 mph downhill!

Yesterday, 50 miles; Shandaken, Woodstock, Pine Hill, Shandaken. And I rode up Fox Hollow Rd, the road to my house, with it's two 10% plus sections, one of them on dirt. I haven't ridden that road since the last time I signed up for AZ.

Ah, it's good to be back!

And I ran up Fox Hollow Rd this morning in prep for Montauk in two weeks.

Montauk is the tri race for AZ lemmings. It's stunningly beautiful, freezing cold to start and blazing hot on the run. It's one of the originals and it still has that old school vibe you can't find anymore in triathlon.

You should all be there!

Still the best bargain in multi-sport!

Even short course; some sprints cost as much

Formula 1; you get a bargain

Long Course; biggest bargain of all, but you have to earn it!

Yeah, LC is BY FAR the best bang for the buck in all of multisport, period. Full stop.

It is the anti-M.Dot in that regard.

I get that it's very hard to be 'ready' to race LC in mid-May, but I also know that many folks have used it as a fully-catered training day.
With FREE BEER and kickass food afterwards!!

Awesome prep for anybody doing IM or HIM races later in the year - those courses will feel like a recovery ride compared to AmZof.

Tested a new secret formula for Sweeney's Special Sauce Racing Fuel on a 52 mile ride today along the Long Island Expressway Service Rd this morning.

The Special Sauce started out a long time ago when I mixed Perpentuem and Mountain Dew to give me an extra kick. Worked great but it was much too gassy. For the races I do, I really don't need ''nutrition''. All I need is caffeine and sugar. Last year I tried black coffee with 6 sugars in a water bottle on the bike but it gave me heartburn on the run.

This years version kicks ass! Mountain Dew with a packet of one of those packets of caffeine energy drink with three tablespoons of sugar in a water bottle. It's like having three cups of coffee in a water bottle. I was jammin on the bike and I felt good after. Had lunch, went shopping and finally crashed around 3 o'clock

Now I'm really ready for Montauk!

Yeah, but I can't get past the taste of RB. I tastes, to me, like I'm drinking bubble gum.

This stuff is delicious! The caffeine powder is cherry flavored with the Dew and more sugar it's delicious.

But yeah, Caffeine and sugar, put some salt in if you want; what more do you need?!

Are there really only 6 people signed up for long course next year?

I don't know that most people sign up for this race a year in advance. In fact, I'm unsure registration has even formerly opened this far in advance before. So don't let the 6 racer number sway you. That said, only 19 lined up for LC this year and it tends to be about this kind of number of hearty souls.

Aid. 2 aid stations on the bike loop, so 7 opportunities to grab water, heed, gels whatever for long course. But given the location of one table at the park entrance you probably wouldn't hit that heading out or in, so make that 5 aid stop possibilities.

There is 1 table for the run but you pass by it twice per run lap. In prior years contents varied by time of day. Water / heed for lap 1, but then more comes out later: gels, pretzles, cookies, water melon.

Re self support though: there's no mechanical support. I had an issue with my Di2 shifting that I just rolled with til I DNF'd due to cramping (forgot my nutrition and I cramp terribly if I don't ingest a fair amount of salt). Carry a flat kit and you should be fine.

Welcome aboard!

Tsunami really gives you the low-down on the race. I just want to add a few things. The aid tables are manned with enthusiastic volunteers and as you pass through the pavillion after each transition, you can not only get race appropriate stuff like, water, Heed, gels, chips, you can get a barbequed burger and a beer, and maybe a shot of Jameson! While you are getting cheered, howled at and heckled by the earlier racers who are starting to feel pretty good!

This is not like a wtc race. It's more like when the first racers went to Oahu for Ironman to find something different. Most racers keep coming back and most say that it's their favorite race of all!

I'm coming back next year at 70 to celebrate. Come join the insanity, you'll probably keep coming back for years!

I think this is only the 2nd time out of all the years AmZof has been running (since Oct β€˜05) that registration for the next year’s race was open this early.

To augment Sweeney & Tsunami’s points:
the Pavilion at the transition area is VERY well stocked, not only w race nutrition, but all the post race feast stuff too.
MANY a LC racer has grabbed a burger or dog or soup or cookie or whatever during the later run laps.

And yes - in years past we’ve had shots of Jameson and Irish Car Bombs available too, and more than one LC and GCG racer has availed themselves of that β€œaid” while still racing.

I’m hoping to bring those back again for next year.

For the run (post bike, since nobody needs run aid for Run 1 - although it is open for business then), you not only get the aid at the Pavilion, but the run aid station out on course, which you pass 2x for each loop.
So, you have the Pavilion aid at the start/finish of each run lap, and the Run course aid station at approx 1/3 & 2/3 thru the run course.

LC racers can use the bike aid station just outside the entrance for Special Needs, if they have anything specific for themselves they’d like to stash there.

When I did LC my plan was to have enough on the bike for the first 2 laps, maybe augment that w aid if needed, then have my last bottle in Special Needs for the final lap.
(I use Infinit, so I like having my own stuff. YMMV. )

GCG Middle Distance racers are better off just having their own stuff In Transition for each of the 2 laps of the bike, since you return there after each lap.

My go-to for that was always 2 bottles on bike to start B1: 1- water, 1-fuel, then swap out BOTH before starting out on B2.
I’d keep the replacements partially frozen in a small cooler bag, so they’d still be nicely chilled after a few hours of R/B/R prior to T3.

I’d generally just live off the run course aid, maybe bring some salt tabs w you and/or some Tylenol or what have you.

Hope this helps.

Now, onto a more important mission, let's all get in someone's ear about moving the date to LITERALLY ANY OTHER WEEKEND THAT ISN'T SUNY NP GRADUATION.

What what? Zofingen West? Hmm. I still need to get to Zofingen East (been to Switzerland and plan to go back for that race, possibly in 2020).

As to distance, the clear thing about AmZof is the distances organically use the available terrain. No weird out and backs aiming to force a certain mileage. So my thinking is that the "right" distance for another course would make use of what's available. Though maybe some long timers would like to weigh in on that...

Anyway, consider me intrigued!

Hi,

so couple questions, 1. does it usually sell out? 2. if I sign up for long course and later on decide that I was insane to do so, can I drop to a shorter distance? Looking forward to making a bad decision, just want to make sure its the correct one!

AmZof, to my knowledge, is limited to the # of cars that can park in the preserve, rather than to a strick # of participants. I've not heard of it selling out over my tenure (since 2012).

And yes, historically it's been very easy to change distances. But (!!!), I invite you to register for long and stick to your guns. It makes me sad to read an entrance list and then people drop. Just come prepared to suffer and you'll be sure to get your money's worth.

Thank you! Long course it is! My other question, one thing I loved in prepping for SOS was the bootcamp weekend and getting to know the course. Are their usually people who train/ride/run the course I could hook up with leading into the race to get some idea what to expect race day? I am outside NYC so a day trip or random weekend is always available!

I've never heard of anything official, but I've made the trip a couple times in April to scope out what winter did to the pavement and psyche myself up. I typically make an over night trip since I live near Philly. I'll definitely need to hit some tough run and bike climbing early next year, to prep for St George and PM Zofingen. Happy to advertise when I go, though damn near everyone is faster on that course than I am.

Anyway, consider me intrigued!

The original Powerman Zofingen has a 10k run and then a 30k run.
150k bike course (3 laps of 50k) = 93m

When John McGovern decided to recreate that event here in Ulstertucky, rather than be a slave to those EXACT distances, he used the terrain available to make the best courses for run & bike, so they ended up being 5m and 15m for the runs for Long Course, for example.
Bike Long Course (3 laps) distance is 85 miles.

However, everyone who has done both events, says that while AmZof is a little shorter, it is HARDER, due to more and steeper climbing on both run & bike loops.

For another Powerman-esque event, you'd probably want to aim for approximate distances in that general range, but focus first on making it a fun, interesting, challenging course.

Not me.
I took a "rest day" and did a casual cruise up w/ Mrs ML at Minne carriage roads that afternoon.

There's not a set AmZof camp, but like many others, I ride the course several times in the Spring prior to the race.

IF you're just going to ride a loop or 2, no need to pay to park in the Preserve, you could park elsewhere (like at the little Chapel down the hill, and there are other places too) on the course, and just do a lap or 2.
(You can use your car as your "aid station" if you plan multiple laps.)
If you also want to run the course, then you'll want to park in the Spring Farm lot, but you'll be paying the day rate to do so.

PS - they have completed repaving the road from where 299 ends, ALL THE WAY UP TO MINNE, and then down the other side a short way.
It is like. buttah.

Still need to add the white lines, but the pavement itself is sublime.

ML, congratulations on your great finish at SOS Cape Cod. Why no report? It's good to see you all from SOS country finishing so well at the new race. Mike H continues to amaze!

Regarding warm ups for AZ; The Bridge To Bridge run is at the same place, on the same running terrain but a different course in late March or early April. It's the perfect chance to get in a run and a lap of the bike course. I'll probably be doing just that next spring.

Thx Jim!
It was the SOS designed so a rockfish like me could actually be competitive.
The bike actually mattered there; unlike the original SOS - where it's just an apertif to cleanse the palate and spread out the field before you start an Otillo-style swim/run event.
And the swims were short enough that I didn't bleed too much time to the rest of the field all day long.

Dr Mike is a machine.
I'll be racing him again tonite at the club sprint.
(weather permitting. Chance of Tstorms in the area all afternoon & evening)

Good call on the Bridge 2 Bridge Run - there were several peeps there racing that, then going out to ride afterwards.

The only caveat I'll make is - it is NOT at all like the AmZof run course, since it's mostly flat and almost entirely on carriage roads.
The only exceptions are the little jaunt up Rock Rift and back down, which is non-technical.
And then the descent down to the Pavillion, which is blazing fast - so, it ends up being a net-downhill run.

Oh, for sure!
It was a fun event, and also a good excuse to visit my brother & SIL up there.

Swims were in lovely, fresh water ponds.
Bike was far more interesting than I expected, and I have some KOM whoring to do there next time.
Runs were decent -
first one most challenging and interesting, the middle 2 just kinda OK, and the last one was a little over a mile on the road to get back to the village of Wellfleet, so it is what it is.

It's a much more accessible race than the original SOS, due to the shorter distances, and not selling out in 5 minutes at midnight.

Winning times for NY are typically right around 4.5 hours, vs Cape Cod was just under 3.
My best SOS time was 5 flat, and I was basically 3 flat for CC.

Whats the thoughts on a 42 front and 11-32 rear for gearing? My road bike was 39 - 12-23 and I could have used a few more on that second bike leg!

39x23 is a TOUGH "granny" gear for AmZof - especially the 2nd (or 3rd!) lap(s) of the bike.

I've done that in training, going up Mohonk seated in the 23 as a Stupid Human Trick, but it's ill-advised for the actual race.

From what I found online, 42 x 32 is about equal to 39 x 30.
That is a TON of climbing gearing.
You should be fine.

Now, you may get spun out a bit on some of the descents, but that's probably also a Good Thing, as you'll be prompted to just coast and enjoy the free ride while it lasts.

Typically, I'll stop pedaling once I get up to the mid-high 30's, but that's also usually on Lap 1.
By Lap 2, anything 32+ feels like plenty, so I'll stop pedaling.
By Lap 3, anything north of 28 works. ;-p

Tri bike is the right tool for the job.
There's plenty o' aero goodness to be had, when you're not climbing.

Thanks for the advice, exactly what I was looking for! Oh I'll be coasting on the downhills, just trying to breathe between cuss words.

Whoo Hoo! Got out on the bike today on Long Island! Great day, 2 1/2 hours of Oyster Bay/ Cold Spring Harbor hill-work. Don't laugh, the stuff over there, while not as long as the hills Upstate are just as much killers. Five hours later, I'm still a wreck!

This is going to be as lot harder at 70 than it used to be!

Newb questions...for the run how technical are the trails? Are trail shoes recommend and if so more like racing shoes or heavy duty ones?

Also I presume start finish for the bike and run laps all end up in the same place? How does setting up transitions work?

Thanks!

You definitely don’t need heavy duty trail shoes, but I am glad that I wore my trail shoes last year. I would say that the uphill sections are technical, but you are going so slow that they aren’t. The downhill sections are mostly on dirt road, so nothing technical there. The little extra grip was nice to have on the uphills.

Run/bike start/finish are in the same area. That part is easy. No thinking required.

Enjoy the race. It is an awesome experience with a great atmosphere.

Singletrack uphill, double uphill. Trail shoes are not a must, but you might be glad you wore them. You will be pounding down some long downhills, so keep that in mind when picking your shoes.

I'm an old guy and I use Hoka trail shoes, and I've never felt that the reason I didn't win the race because of my shoes!

What, no mention of AZ 6 hour trail run?!

I got this yesterday from Tom;

''new this year is the trail run for 100 people that is 6 hours to run as many loops as you can. I would like to ask that you spread the word so we can fill this up and make a great donation to the Preserve and the Wallkill High School Nordic ski and track teams who provide a lot of volunteers. This is not an official non-profit race but any profit is donated to these groups.''

It looks like a great idea. I hope it gets off to a good start this year

Right now I've got to go. Heading out for some more Shandaken hill work!

AmZof always looks like a great idea before and after the race.

Any chance of Am-Zof ever becoming a qualifier for Powerman Zofingen? Seems to make more sense than long course Nationals.

I'm going to check with the host bike shop, but wanted to check in on here as well. I am looking to take a trip to check out the course and ride/run a loop one of the next few Sundays, may have some days off in April as well if someone is local. Anyone planning to get on the course that wouldn't mind a tag along!

Hopefully there are not virus complications by raceday!!!

I'm about an hour and a half North and would definitely consider coming down. We have a wedding on race day this year but I would like to race the long course someday.

I don't know if I'll get to do a ride around the course this time around. I'll keep working the hills in Shandaken and on Long Island's North Shore.

But I got good news the other day; due to the Corona Virus, the King's Park 15k race has been postponed. They are hoping for June 13. This has been a great training race for me on the way to AZ in the past and I've had some good races there on the very hilly course. It's always going up or down and some of those hills will suck the legs right off of you.

So this year, being 69 and 11/12ths on Kings Park race day, I didn't want to give away so much age advantage to the 65 year olds on such a tough course. I thought I'd wait til next year and hit it as a 70 year old. With the postponement I'll not only be able to race it twice as a 70 year old, I'll be able to make it my focused race for June. Hurray for me!

And now for the best thing about King's Park, besides the killer course, the thing that makes it so perfect for all AZ racers;

You get to race through the old insane asylum!!

Any word on whether this race is still on? Everything looks good on the facebook page and website, but just wanted to double check since so many things through May and even June have already been called off. Sadly, the wedding we were going to got cancelled, which means I have the weekend off to race if it is still an option. Silver linings maybe?

Also would be awesome to get a training ride/run in on the course this month if it is still on.

Wanting to know this also! I think the preserve is closed at the moment, which doesn't look great for it staying on.

Also if it opens/you are going to hit the course let me know! I am looking to rag along with someone who knows it...and my month is wide open unfortunately

I received an email from Tom a few weeks ago saying that he was hoping to hear From the Mohawk Preserve by the end of March about whether or not the race can go on. With how this virus has exploded over the past couple of weeks, and with the prediction that the next three weeks will get much worse, that takes us to the end of April with our police and medical systems strained to the max. I don't see any way for the race to go on in the middle of May.

I've been training hard for AZ and for the Kings Park 15K race, that's now scheduled for June, but I don't think either one will be happening. With our medical system strained, it just doesn't seem right to take a chance and sending someone else to a hospital.

Now this is just me, but I also don't think we should be training on the AZ course. There are plenty of places to train. Of all the training routes I know, the AZ course is probably the one that you're most likely to crash on. Again it's just me but I don't think we should be taking that risk at this time.

On AZ race day, I plan to do a solo 4 mile run, 40 mile bike, 4 mile run, in Shandaken. It won't be the same but what the heck, an old guy's got to do, what an old guy's got to do!

Well, I'm sure most of you have gotten the email for Tom and to no one's surprise, AZ is officially cancelled for this May. We might get a shot at it in September or October, and we might have a virtual race in May. And everyone will roll over into the next r

It's the right thing to do. I think it's time to stay safe, and stay away, and live to fight another day!

I'll see you all in the fall or maybe in 2021.

Stay safe everyone!

I'm sad, but not surprised, and honestly I don't have the fitness I wanted either. But I hope to bring it in 2021!

I will definitely be doing some kind of 5-28-5 torture-fest on May 17th, likely with virtual biking hills and zero running hills. Though I could run up and down my street for 5 miles. That would probably be suitably punishing.

Until next time, gang...

Darn, it's a perfect day to race. It's in the low 50's in NP right now and only going up to the high 50's. It could have been awesome.

I wouldn't have made it to the starting line anyway. Everything was right on target into the first week of April when I did a 1:45:00 minute mountain run here in Shandaken and strained everything in my left hip. That took away about a week and a half of training. Then just as I was starting to feel good again running, I fell off of my roof and injured my ribs. That cost me about another 2 1/2 weeks. I started running again last week and rode the bike outside for the first time in a month, yesterday.

I learned a lesson about my limits for run training and I think I'll be back for next year. I didn't get to celebrate being 70 at AZ so I'm looking forward to doing the race next year at 71!
