What '04 races have you signed up for?
Just thought I'd check to see how many of you have an idea about your seaon. Ironman WI on Sept. 12th is the big goal this year and so far I have scheduled here in IL/WI...

Springfield Ironhorse on June 20

Pardeeville WI (Sprint) on July 11

Dairyland (Racine) 1/2 Ironman on July 25th

...and probably another sprint in August...Wausau or Pleasant Prairie, just to have a few speed sessions before the last build up to Madison.

What's everybody racing?

Here's my schedule:

Santa Cruz 1/2 marathon (3/28)
Uvas triathlon (4/25)
Caliman 1/2 IM (5/22) - "A" race
San Jose Intl Tri (6/20)
Folsom Intl Tri (8/15)
Big Kahuna 1/2 IM (9/12) - "A" race
?? (still planning my late season)

I'd like to throw in a late season marathon- maybe California International. We'll see. No IM's this year with the second baby on the way in three weeks, but IM Canada 2005 is definitely on the radar! (Can I already offer to bribe someone to register me at this year's race ?!)

I was thinking about Memphis in May,but then I found out about one in Navarra Florida on April 4.Then today the wife informed me that was the same weekend we do a local 5k race every year.Decisions decisions.

Other than Active.com where is a good listing of 2004 races?

Here's what's scheduled, some of which I still need to register for. I planned to do some sprints leading up to an Oly. I didn't know sprint races filled up in 5 minutes. So, it looks like I'll be doing 1/2IM and Olys this summer.

Galena, IL ... closed. Leroy, IL ... closed.

1. 6/20 -- (1st Ever) Ironhorse -- Springfield, IL (Father's Day) S1.5mi -- B56mi -- R13mi

Mark? See ya there? This race is likely over my head. It will be one where "finishing" is the goal. I wanted to avoid that, but oh well, I am confident I can handle it.

Are you signed up: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/...anJAvery/IHE2004.HTM

If I'm still alive ...

2. 7/17 -- Hammerfest -- Ottawa, IL -- S1500m -- B24.9mi -- R6.2mi

3. 8/15 -- Effingham, IL -- S0.5mi -- B24.9mi -- R6.2mi

4. 8/29 -- Chicago, IL (Why Not?) -- S1500m -- B24.9 -- R6.2mi

Anyone know of open races in Indiana and/or Misery ... err ... Missourri? I'd like to do more than 4 races for a year's worth of training.

TripleT-

I signed up tonight for Springfield...just decided I better get after some of this the way the races fill. Paul McDevitt runs a great race. It is still recovering from the water/leptospirosis situation a few years back. They are hyper-careful with the water in Lake Springfield now and if it rains alot in the days right before the race, they will cancel the swim and turn it into a duathlon. It is very well run though and the 10 mile run is just a little hillier than advertised!

I see where the Ottawa race is under new management this year. Last year was a bit of a disappointment with the swim being canceled and some other situations. I wish them luck with the new direction.

Good Luck

Mark

Rumor has it Hammerfest was cancelled.

You might check out the whole "Ultramax" racing family in Missourri. I've never done any of them, but I'm kicking around doing the half in August/September.

www.trifind.com is good. It's frequently updated, though it may be better for some states than others.

I am Booked for a few oly's, 2 1/2 im's and several local sprints. The sprints are at a great turn for a nice century. 45 miles to the race 11 during and 45 home. I am on the east coast specifically in Jersey. There are tons of places to look for races. Metro race forum -raceforum.com, triath.com, lin-mark.com, trifind.com and others that are not coming to mind.

allentown 1/2 marathon 5-04

NYC tri (oly) 6-04

escape from fort Delaware (oly) 6-04

Tupper Lake 1/2 im 6-04 still thinking?

Timberman 1/2 im 7-04

I need to fill in July and september and suggestions for the east coast driving distance from Joisey.

I'm heading to Kona in October and plan on doing the Muskoka Long Course, Peterborough 1/2, Kingston Long Course, and Ottawa 1/2 for sure as part of my prep for the biggie. I may also through in a sprint race (Milton, Orillia, Brockville OD) for some speedwork along the way.

Maybe some races in western Michigan would be close enough for you. If you do some of them, let me know.

I've got 2 races paid for

Eagleman and IMFL

Planning on 5 to 7 olys and sprints in Michigan to train through. I'm still looking for something in early October that is within driving distance (400 miles from SE Michigan) to fill the gap between my last oly and IMFL. If anyone has any suggestions let me know.

Being a duathlete I don't have to plan to far ahead to register for races. That being said 2 duathlons in phoenix in feb, Powerman Alabama in March. March 7 the new duathlon in Phx or going to the Worlds qualifier the week before Bama depending upon the closing of my house. Probably to VA Beach for the final qualifier and to see family. The AZ Dannon du, some of the other duathlons that have sprouted up in the Phx area. Off to Oh to race the long course qualifier and then to choose either belgium or Denmark if I qualify. Never been to Denmark, have stayed in Brussels for a few days. Will wrap the season up with Dannon nationals in GA and dannon catherdal city 10k/60k/10k race. Can't race more than 12 or 14 du's as they are more physically demanding than tri's. I'll toss in a bike race or 4 and some 5k and 10k runs.

Two biggies paid for:

Columbia OD 23MAY

Dairyland HIM 25JUL (see ya there Mark!)

Four smallish & local races I'm about to enter (online reg opened this week for some of the Triathlantic events):

Pt Lookout Sprint Du 25APR

Spud and Son of Spud OD 13JUN and 15AUG

Cedarfest MTB Sprint Du 18JUL

and there are 11 other races, generally small to medium fields and all within a couple hours of me, from sprint du/tri to HIM that I've got listed on my '04 wishlist. 3 of them are highly probable: 2x HIM and an OD near the close of the season.

Pardeeville, eh? I did that one way back in the day (like, 1988 or '89 when it was part of the WI Vic Tanny series). seem to remember the distances at that time were about 0.5mi, 20mi 4mi...that's a longish sprint if they haven't changed it!

Whew..just got home tonight and it looks like everybody has some big plans already!

A comment on a post or two...If you are local to IL or WI you may remember the Pardeeville Triathlon which ran for 15 consecutive years in WI before the race director Bill Ehlert felt he needed a break for abit. I raced all 15 of them and was happpy to see that it is being restarted (with a little of Bill's help I bet)by the Wisconsin Triathlon Series folks who took that over after Ken MacKenzie's troubles. I highly recommend the race...nice course, nice little town.

Also, it looks like we'll see some of you in Racine in July (bring the fullsuit...Lake Michigan was pretty chilly last year!) and some more of you in Madison in September. Hopefully we'll have a nice 68 degree day!

Best,

Mark

Maraton Popular de Valencia on Feb 1, in Valencia Spain. First time racing overseas and really looking forward to this one!

Cincinnati Flying Pig on 5/2

IMUSA Lake Placid on 7/25

TriAMerica Cleveland on 8/11 (scheduled to be held this year, we hope, at Mentor Headlands state park, just a few miles from where I live!)

If still walking, possibly the HFP Pineman full IM distance in September

There will be other races between, but those are the ones I am really looking forward to.

Good luck at IM WI. Did it last year. Great race.

This is still tentative, and I'd like to do more races this year, but the schedule doesn't look promising.

March: Mass Law Enforcement 1/2 Marathon(tentative)
April-May: Still looking (plenty of sprints, but not worth my time)
June: Ashland Int'l Tri(1/26/6) Ashland, MA Good race, moderate difficulty, 3 miles from my house+++)
July: IM Lake Placid - Needless to say, this is the big one NY
August: 2 weeks in Hawaii(partly for a wedding, mostly to keep my tolerant wife happy)
August: Cranberry Country Tri(Oly) Nice flat course, windy on the bike, but only if I recvoer from IMLP in time
September: FirmMan 1/2 IM Narragansett, RI Ocean swim, accurate distance

I'd like to do more, but in these parts, races of Oly distance or longer are fairly uncommon. Ideally, I'd like to do 3-4 Oly's, 2 1/2's, and an IM every year. To do that, I'd have to travel a lot more, which I find both inconvenient and cost-prohibitive. If I survive IMLP with my body, mind, and marriage intact, maybe I'll plan to do a destination race like St. Croix or Lanzarote in a year or two.

I've said it before, and it bears repeating: I know you folks in Cali have your own set of problems, but the plethora of races and a near year-round schedule sure does make me green.

Rather slow year for me, but with twin boys due in 5 weeks decided that my training and races would take a hit this year.

San Francisco 1/2 Marathon (February)

Markleeville Death Ride (if I make it through the lottery again) (July)

SF Marathon (July - depending upon exact date and conflicts with Death Ride and/or IMS below)

IM Switzerland (July - maybe - I have to be out there on business, but that may detract from my main 04 race below)

IM Canada (August - thanks to a lucky lottery draw).

Bit of Austin Powers to start off your Friday.

May I remind you that THE MUSSELMAN is debuting in central NY this summer, on July 11th. Within driving distance of all of New England and parts of the midwest (Cleveland, Erie, Ohio and Indiana), a beautiful course, and reasonable entry fees. Plus, Karen Smyers will be speaking at the pre-race dinner (free for athletes).

Tentative plan:

Big races:
  • Half IM California
  • Wildflower Olympic possibly
  • CaliforniaMan IM
  • Buffalo Springs 1/2 IM(mostly to watch a friend I'm coaching as it's 4 weeks after IM, though knowing me I'll probably race anyway)
  • Vineman 1/2 IM
  • Xterra Big Bear
  • IM Wisconsin

Numerous other running races, possibly bike races, shorter tris and du's

Jeff,

I hit the website today and see the race is in my old backyard...grew-up in Ithaca and most of my family still live up on the east side of Cayuga Lake. I have to know about the bike course.... I can't recall the terrain in Geneva but if its anything like the southern end of the lakes you could map out one nasty bike route. So what do you have in store?
