Compiling a list of Non-Branded 70.3s
Hi Slowtwitchers,

I've just moved to the states and I'm looking to compile a list of non branded half and full distance races. I couldn't find one online and I thought it may be of use to all of we out one together.

Event, Distance, Month of year, State,

Wildflower, 70.3, May, California
Auburn Triathlon, 70.3, June, California
Savageman, 70.3, September, Maryland

They are the ones in my area plus savageman which I knew of. If everyone adds to the list based on their area and those they know we'll have a long one in no time.

Thanks for your help!

Would setting this up as a google document so we can enter info as one piece be easier than compiling from a list of individual posts?

Barrelman (Niagara Falls) is the largest non-70.3 race in North America and it is a fantastic race if you can make it work with your travel plans. Flat, scenic, iconic views, best swim you'll ever have.

See Toughmantri.com for a list of their series.

BTW, for you and others posting, if it's non-branded it cannot legally be called a 70.3. E.g., Challenge refers to their halves as "middle distance"; HITS calls them a "Half", Toughman also calls them a "Half", etc.

Throwing a couple Canadian (BC) Half distance triathlons in the mix since we have lots of Washington and Oregon triathletes who come up for our events and both of these are within 30 minutes of the CAD/USA border:

Oliver Half Iron, Half (70.3), June, B.C. (great alternative to Ironman 70.3 Victoria, same weekend)

A different twist on the non-branded 70.3 is planned for next year: HFP Racing and PR Multisport have come together to bring triathletes a unique and challenging event – the GREAT LAKES TRIAD will feature 3 triathlons for a total of 70.3 miles all starting and finishing in beautiful downtown Vermilion, OH. Each triathlon will feature a .4 mile swim – 18.6 mile bike – 4.36 mile run. Participants will have 2 hours and 15 minutes to finish race #1 and race #2. For the final triathlon participants will have a total of 3 hours to complete the course and become an official finisher of the inaugural GREAT LAKES TRIAD. For those not quite up to the individual challenge, there will be a 3-person team division. The cutoff times remain the same for both individual and teams. The race is scheduled for September 15th, 2019. More details coming soon on HFP's website.

This was included in an email sent by HFP a couple of weeks ago. No additional details posted yet on their website. I plan to register. I haven't done a race this long in a decade, but my 59-year-old body is telling me this one could be a fun return to long distance tri.

Around May-June in Auburn CA there's a 70.3 called "The Worlds Toughest Half" and its brutal. Well into 5k+ft of gain on the bike and 2k+ft of gain for the run that's a mix of road/single track.

Around the same time in Steamboat Springs CO there's a 70.3 called Tri The Boat that has quite a bit of climbing for both bike/run and around 7000ft above sea level adds an additional factor. I did that race two years ago and it was super warm and very exposed. I heard they mellowed the course out but not sure how true that is.

Is the race and the area worth traveling to?

Let me start by saying I am an ambassador for the race so I'm a little biased. (I don't have a discount code yet, but I can find out when they will be issuing them.)

It's a pond swim. Wetsuit legal but no freezing Maine ocean, which may be a plus or a minus for you. The bike course is rolling, but nothing horrible. The run is pleasant, rural roads, mostly. Relay and aquabike at all distances, kids splash n' dash.

What makes this race special for me is the atmosphere (the community really gets behind it) and the post-race food. Thanksgiving dinner if you race the oly or the half. The RD is passionate about making it a great athlete experience.

As far as if you like the area... Depends what you're after! Fall is a beautiful time to visit New England. It's about an hour north of Boston, less than an hour south of Portland.

Here's a great write-up about it:

Too many people to reply to individually, this has been great. I've got a list of 60 different festivals events at the half distance or further in a excel spread sheet now. I'll keep track of this and when it slows down I'll post the whole list. Everyone's races have been added in with the URL that links to the site directly.

Lake George Half in the Adirondacks in upstate NY. The race is part of a weekend-long Tri festival that includes an Oly race the day prior to the half. You can also race both for the King George title. Beautiful course and great little town for a Tri-cation.

Hi Scott,

I rode the beast on a computrainer many years ago. St Criox is one of things iconic races, I didn't realise it still ran since Ironman moved away. Do you guys run a pro race there? I love a hilly course.

Hi Ryan,

Yes, the Beast is. Challenge for sure! The local RD and Ironman parted ways in 2017 - then Hurricane Maria hit and devistated the island.

This year’s race will be held on Dec 2nd - cooler temps and a better time to visit from colder climates. And 100% of the proceeds will be given to local charities who were impacted by the storm. See https://stxtriathlon.com/.

Will add Megunticook with a footnote. It is all in a excel spreadsheet. I have not placed exact dates on my document (as they will change) but it is done by month and state. Easily filtered or sorted on excel.

Hey Dangle, thanks for the heads up on that. I think I might add in IM and Challenge races to get a full calendar of half events for North America. I hadn't anticipated the amount of independent events that were going strong in the States, it would seem a shame now to not round out the list with all the events.

The Beauty & The Beast Triathlon on St. Croix (US Virgin Islands) will be held on December 2, 2018. This year's race is headed by VI TRI, a nonprofit that aims to raise funds for three nonprofits (My Brother's Table, Caribbean Centers for the Boys & Girls of the Virgin Islands and Animal Welfare Center) all of whom suffered devastating losses when the island was ravished by Hurricane Maria in September 2017. Three races will be offered: Long Distance Course, Sprint and for the first time, a Sprint Aquathlon. Relays are offered in the Long Distance Course and Sprint Triathlon races. In addition, the Long Distance Course race is designated as the Caribbean Long Distance Triathlon Championship. Team discounts are available. http://www.virginislandstriathlon.com.

Thanks all for keeping the responses coming in. Even when they are doubles it is great to see people champion their local events. It'll be great to have a list of events that will run in 2019 (at least) and have been recommended by people here who raced them. I've expanded the list to include Challenge and Ironman events across the Americas. We have 132 races and counting. Its slowing down, but I'll keep watching this and publish when appropriate!

Goose Pond Island Half Iron, May 26, 2019

Goose Pond Island, Scottsboro, AL, swim is in Lake Guntersville, downriver from Chattanooga along the Tennessee River. Scottsboro is a small town with limited restaurants and amenities, but Guntersville is nearby with many restaurants and shopping options.

Scottsboro is about 1 hour from Chattanooga, 45 minutes from Huntsville, AL, 2 hours from Atlanta and Nashville.

The Black Diamond Tri event had been the last remaining 70.3 event in Washington held west of the Cascade mountains. Unfortunately, starting this year, they trimmed it back to only Spring and Oly distance. Only remaining 70.3 events in Washington state are Chelanman (July) and Troika in Spokane (June) - both already mentioned in this thread. No full ironman distance events held in Washington state.

For Oregon, I believe the only remaining 70.3 events are Pacific Crest Multisport Festival and Best in the West - both also already mentioned in this thread.

Hey Mongo, thanks for reading through the thread and picking that up. I've left black diamond on the list but amended it to a OD, Washington is a bit short on races and I have half a hope that events once running a half can scale back up to one if demand increases.

Thanks for reading the thread before making recommendations and it is good to have you vouch for those Oregon/Washington races too.

Awesome, South Dakota gets on the board, and according to their website, it is the only half in their State. Thanks for finding that. I also added the El Reno Rouge Triathlon in your signature. What's not to love about the organization and pricing structure of that event? It also should be the blue print out and back bike course. Pretty cool thing for the organisers to host.

Just my .02 but I vote for leaving off the IM branded races. Everyone knows about them and where to find out about them. Plus they already get enough publicity on their own. The list of non-branded races is awesome though.

As for the Rogue...I’m not sure whether to be flattered or scared. Flattered because I am one of the primary organizers along with my training partner and also it is the most non-event event possible I think. Come and do as little as you want or as much as you want all for free. We set up the course and provide all of the on-course nutrition and support. Mainly meant as a way to get people to be comfortable in group settings and with the distance. Caused a bit of a ruckus with our local club for some reason but whatever. Ended up snowing on the day we were going to have it so had to cancel so hopefully better this year. Meant as a long training day primarily.

Scared because not sure what we would do if we had a couple hundred people commit to the fun since it is free but I’m sure we would figure something out. Last year had about 45 people prepared to join in the fun between tri, aquabike, and relay.

Hi Lschmitt,

I won't pretend that this list will be come a Bible or non branded races which leads to your supported training day being overwhelmed! But, it may, I hope it does. I can leave your eve of off the list if you like. Just let me know. I once ran a supported Ironman for a friend (the only racer) who just didn't quite have the dollars to get to a real event. It was great fun and a free event like yours absolutely has a place.

As for branded Vs non branded. I started this with an idea of getting the independent races all on file. There is so many great options outside of IM etc and they do get all the publicity anyway. I ended up merging them because I found it hard to decide where to draw the line. IM, Challenge, Toughman, HITS?

I think I will make filter for the non branded/independent races and publish that list as per your request and my initial feeling. I may leave HITS events on the list as I don't think they are known at all, but others will go.

Thanks for your 2 cents. Things are slowing down. Publication might come soon!

Feel free to leave it on. We think it has a place as well and was the whole reason for starting it. We had several people approach us saying that if we would market it more we could charge x amount and have a real race and get all these people to come which missed the entire point of it. We were tired of paying big money. We wanted to show people they could have fun without having to fork out big dollars. Yes you do get some additional things for the high entry fee of IM events but you also get a lot of fluff in my opinion. We are hoping to plan some other things in addition to Rogue that would follow the same premise of getting out and having some fun with an awesome group of people and pushing ourselves without having to pay two arms and a leg. As I said before if a bunch more people show up because of the list then so be it. We will make it work. If not we will just take the group we have and go out to have a fun day.

I think for North America the only house name is IM. The general triathlon population has no clue about Toughman, HITS, Challenge, etc. I think it would be fine to leave those on the list. I am really excited to see it once you get it finished up and hope it would be ok to post on our local tri club page and the Rogue website (in all its glory) just to further get the information out there about great but lesser known races. If I could be of assistance in any way feel free to let me know.

Great, I'll leave it on. I've gotten to know a few RDs over the years and they would probably advise you to keep it as is!

I'll keep the minor brands on the list too, I wasn't sure how well known they were here. I've just moved from Australia where Toughman doesn't exist but challenge has had an on and off presence. Given they have 1 US event and 3 in Mexico they aren't exactly big here.

You'd be welcome to share it on your club page, without the brand's the list will be about 100 races long. I haven't put exact dates (just the month) or places (other than the state) so the list is a little general but I have verified they exist and will to he best of my knowledge run in 2019. I have included the direct link to their websites though so information will be at people's fingertips. If you share it, perhaps credit me with my Instagram tag incase anyone were interested in following, that would be appreciated.

I'll let you.know if I need any help, but now I'm basically just waiting for no new races to be given to me in a 24 hour window to declare the list complete.

Final list attached. This message will also be placed in a new thread.

Thank you all for your contributions to the Non-branded Half distance race list. I have compiled the list and you can easily filter it by Month or State to find the best races for you. It became much longer than I ever expected it to be and includes races in Mexico, USA and Canada.

Why not use a website like 220 which offers similar lists? This list is to help promote independent races and I have personally checked that all of these will still run in 2019 (and hopefully beyond). The only exception to this is Beauty and the Beast which is undecided beyond Dec 2018 (so get down there and race this iconic event before it disappears). These races are largely suggested by local athletes who have done them and back them as being great events. Prices range from what you'd expect at a branded race to completely free (El Reno Rouge Triathlon). There are also many at the $100-150 price point. All direct links to the websites are included.

Most of the list are half distance races although some OD, Sprint or even Stage races crept in. For one reason or another I kept them, largely because I considered them iconic (such as Pigman Sprint or Sea to Summit).

Should you find this thread useful and enjoy using it, the best way to say thanks is to follow my triathlon related adventures through the links in my signature.

Happy racing in new places!

Kind regards,
Ryan

Nothing like reviving a thread that is many years old (again).

The document that's posted above still downloads but unfortunately is super out of date. I'll volunteer to rebuild it if this thread gains momentum again.

Would love suggestions for non-branded half(-ish) distance races May-June. Based in Boulder and driving is great, but wouldn't mind flying to practice flying with a bike. (St. George and Boulder are perfectly timed within this window, but I don't know that I want to race an IM-branded 70.3.)

If you’re considering compiling races, please consider doing so on the sites “race calendar” instead of a thread that will get buried again.

As someone who moved to a new state this year, it’s very difficult to find local races if you aren’t already clued in. If people updated the race calendar with events in their area it would be incredibly beneficial to those new to the sport or those who are moving.
