Descending intervals (time)
I was listening to a podcast and the guy was talking about doing 2km repeats but dropping time off each of them.

He didn’t go into much detail but does anyone do this in training?

What’s the end goal? As in the last interval? Is it race pace? Flat out?

Thanks

The concept of descending intervals is usually that they offer a mentally easy way to maintain pace over the course of the workout even as you get physically or mentally tired.

You should never go flat out when you're doing intervals, it really defeats the purpose of the workout. Guessing it is meant as a 10k/hm workout in which case you would work down to race pace or slightly below depending on volume of the workout. Say you run a 35 min 10k, then you might do 4-5x2k starting at 3:45/km and going 5s faster after each rep. This way you get practice at race pace when you are a bit fatigued, and can also help from going to hard in the beginning of a workout.
I've done a few descending workouts, but in those cases i mainly do a bit shorter stuff like 12x400 or 8x500. When I'm doing cruise intervals or a 10k wo I like splitting even paces just to get comfortable at that pace.

A link to the podcast could help.

This person could be a genius or a crackpot.

I didn’t want to say his name but it was a former Kona champion.

It would take me 8 to 10 min to run 2K, can I assume you meant run?

With that length of effort I don't think I could stimulate VO2max mainly cuz I couldn't run fast enough for that long.

If I wanted to stimulate my ability to run at threshold I would likely run 4 of those, maybe 5 and finish the last one as quickly as I could.

If I wanted to practice pacing for a longer race then I might do 6 or 7 of those with a few min between them for a mental break.

If I wanted to run something similar to SST then I may do 4 to 10 of them to stimulate my endurance.

Many different things could be accomplished with that length of interval so I need some sort of context to judge effectiveness.

Does his name start with “M” and rhyme with “backer”?
