Lousy Riders at Chat 70.3
Ten miles in I’m powering up a roller around 27 mph. I come up on a pack of about 6-8 riders from the white to yellow line wide all out of the saddle. None of them moved. At the last second I brake and move right. The guy in front of me finally moves over right and spits up in the air in my face. Before I passed I told him he spit in my face. He told me I was drafting...lol.

Later another group refused to move right. The guy forces me onto the center rumble strip.

What a cluster! Should have been ahead but suffered a swimming injury that sidelined me out of the pool the 3 months previous.

I refuse to have a half assed swim again. Way too dangerous on the bike.

There are a lot of rollers where you hold downhill acceleration through the following climb.

The other guys should have been hit for blocking. It's a big problem on that course. Especially when you put a fast girl out there and a group of guys decide that they don't want to have a girl bike past them. A pack forms and you have to go Luda on them when you catch them. It's happened to me twice at the same exact point on that course in 2016&2017

He got the race confused with the USAC road race that was in town. You know, the ones where you try to drop people over the rollers.

Burn those matches, that's what they're for!

I am not sure why people come on here at cry about all the issues on the bike course. If you have raced more than 1 race you will know that; 1. people will draft and not get caught, 2. people will block you (either on accident or on purpose, 3. there will be packs out on the bike course, 4. all kinds of other crazy stuff will happen.

I do get the fact that people go on here to bitch but it will change nothing. If you really want to do something... talk to the race directors, talk to the race officials, talk to Ironman, talk to USAT (or the governing body where the race took place).

Or...

You can know that this stuff is going to happen and just deal with it. I know that it is frustrating when you try to 'race clean' but now it is part of racing in crowded races. RD's need to have a lot of people race to make the race worth while. So that means that a lot of people are going to be on the course. They have tried going to wave starts to help but people complain about this ('it's not a true ironman if there is not mass start'). So if you are a RD there is no winning.

Just my two cents.

I get what you're saying and crowded courses create challenges... you can't ride it as if you're the only one out there.

It's one of many 'things' you have to deal with racing bikes on crowded courses, open to traffic, etc.

QFT.

Even the local sprints here with 300 people you end up with some idiots on the course. Especially on courses that have multiple laps, there’s inevitably some dude on a Huffy Mountain bike going 14mph swerving all over the lane.

I’ve just accepted it as part of racing.

I got stuck around some idiots at Chattanooga 70.3 for a couple of miles, but I never thought about starting a thread on ST to complain about a single incident, which doesn’t even sound like a big deal.

The Chat bike course was fantastic. The rolling start made a huge difference. Rode the first 40 miles basically completely solo and had the moto come past 5-6 times. Saw almost no drafting for a race with 3,000 people in it.

This is very frustrating and I've had it happen in a lot of races recently. People riding side by side having a conversation during the race. Usually sitting up and wearing an aero helmet. As I tell my wife, there are some people who should NEVER be on the left, but they will ride there (very slowly) and then block the entire time. I guess they think if they stay there, people will just go around them and they don't have to do much weaving in and out of traffic.......though. most of the time, they are going so slow that they are not passing anyone where they would have to weave in and out.

I kinda grumbled to my wife after a recent local race that it seemed there was a lot of this, and people riding right down the middle of the lane, or the meandering cyclists. More than usual in this race.
And then, I remembered, I'm a MOPer (although, if I could run and wasn't in my 40s racing against some fierce competitors with more time and more money, I'd be an upper MOPer) and if it weren't for all these people, this race in my own town wouldn't cost $100. It would probably cost $500. Which, in reality, means it wouldn't exist.

So yeah. I get it. Those people are frustrating. That's why I personally do everything I can to make everyone else's race (no matter the race) as good as mine. Meaning, you won't catch me doing that stuff, unless I space out for a minute and outright "lose track". Not going to deny that it hasn't happened on rare occasions.

But, without "us", there'd be no Chattanooga 70.3 and there'd be exactly one IM distance race. And you probably wouldn't have to qualify to race in it. They'd be begging you to race in it. It would likely cost about $4000 to enter it. Any actual prize money would be a pittance. The bikes would cost 5x as much as they do and would probably still look very much like road bikes.

That all being said, it's not a justification. I'm trying to think of a way not to say "it is what it is". I think "poor riding" is the most common gripe (outside of breast strokers) people have about racing and encompasses bunching, drafting, packs, unsafe and inconsiderate riding. It's generally the only thing I'll grumble about. Not sure what more they could do, but I hope RDs at the "local levels" are constantly looking for ways to address it.

Heck, we don't even generally bitch about parking. We just know it's not easy and likely going to be a hassle and accept. And sometimes it never is. I just parked for a race of 700+ racers and my car was 100 feet from my rack? And I arrived fairly late.

Speaking of drafting, I was on the course on Sunday and saw this girl and bigger guy with very similar kits on. She was pretty strong too. I thought it was odd, but he seemed to be pacing her a bit. After the race, I went to Strava's flyby and noticed he rode with her the whole way on the course and she was a pro. I'm not 100% sure, but I think he may have been pacing her. Not a big deal, but I believe she was top 10.

Anyway, I didn't see many issues on the bike course other than some guy sitting on my wheel at mile 12 and after I yelled at him, that this wasn't Texas, he backed off.

Unfortunately, I believe RDs are doing what they can to address this (ie, reminding you at every race to NOT draft and to NOT block). It comes down to the individuals racing. The large majority of any race field is trying to race but also be respectful of the other competitors involved. There's always a small minority who reflect a "its all about me and I'm gonna do what I want" attitude. Don't know how to change those folks because a lot of our general society has become like this

Yah, don't get me wrong. I think they are too. I'm under the assumption they're always thinking "how can I make my race better?"...and since this comes up often, they think about it often.

Like I said, I'm not sure what they could do. Start warning? Pulling people off the course? Issuing penalties? The last thing they want to do is intimidate the bulk of their customers. Fair enough.

They'd have to think outside the box. Maybe create a catchphrase that people could use as gentle reminders. Something that's not interpreted as casting blame or griping. A nicety...if you will. Akin to "on your left" (which, in theory, should work as it is.

Make it a little fun. Maybe even tie it to the race. Or even a "Good morning" Just something that when someone hears it, it's known and widely accepted that it's just a reminder to do it right and be safe for all. If those of us who aren't jerks and don't deliver it in a condescending huff, we all go home happier and awareness goes up?

I dunno. Just spitballin' here.

Then again, I tend to read rules and actually pay attention to course talks because it makes my day more pleasant. Not sure how many do.

It's meh. Kind of funny but like most movies of that era, the style of comedy hasn't aged all that well. I'd give it 3.5 stars if on the trainer, but only 1.6 if sitting in the living room, and that's being generous, mainly because you see some of JLC's flesh.

Speaking of lousy riders and drafting, there is a great thread on the Facebook Chatty 70.3 group. A guy basically has race photos of some woman drafting him for 15 miles. Others recognized her and found photos of her drafting them at other races. Cheated her way to a top AG bike split.

Don't drown. Don't crash. Don't walk.

You cant tell anything about drafting from static pictures. Pink? Maybe. Maybe not. You decide.

Sure. I know. She could just be passing, being passed, whatever. I have several photos of me being passed, but it looks like I'm glued to someone's wheel. I just got a kick out of his story as it was compelling and funny with supposed photographic evidence.

I love how so many are coming to the defense of the guys that were blocking the course. “Well you had to have done something to cause their actions”....lol. I’ve rode other IM races and blocking happens far too often. It makes me wonder why these people would defend crappy riders that even spit on someone and then justify it. They seem to be of the same mindset of the guy that spit on me. It’s a pretty sad way to think.

It's not so much that people are defending the crappy riders as much as making fun of someone getting so worked up about something that happens in every single triathlon ever that they run to the internet to whine about it.

Why don't you consider some things you could have done differently to avoid the (several) conflicts you were involved in.

Sort of like 1/2 the population drives on the highway? Just sit in the left lane and make everyone else weave around you, why should we expect anything different in a race?

Some random guy yelled at me at IMNC for passing him on the right, while he was hugging the center line with no one else around. (before I get flamed, he was going very slow, and yelling "on your left" ahead of the pass, I would have had to slow down significantly to give him time to get over).

Apparently my sarcasm radar was off, and it hit me at grumpy time. I'll try eating a snickers or something.

Reading this I would love to dump some of these complainers in the middle of a RR or crit rolling along at 30mph with 30 guys shoulder to shoulder.

"Dude, dude, I'm trying to pass. Passing, on your left. You're blocking!!!"

I wonder if you could take what they say about soccer and rugby and apply it to triathlon and bike racing: "soccer is a gentleman's sport played by thugs and rugby a thug's sport played by gentlemen".

Same thing happened to me at Chattanooga. Coming out of transition and some dude was trying to put on his shoes and riding right in the middle of the road. I get it. You're unstable while putting on your shoes. I'm going to do the same thing, but don't yell "you have to pass on your left" at me when I come around you on the right and you're wobbling all over the course.

How did you do at North Carolina? I loved that bike course but wheels fell apart the last few miles on the run.

I did it in 2016 with the headwind on 421. Lots of things went wrong on that bike, but I was on my roadie and pushed a little too hard on the "out" into the wind that my legs were pretty toasted. I ran well, slowly, but consistent until about 11-12 miles in when things really started to hurt.

I hope at some point they bring back the full. It was better when Setup did it, smaller more manageable, but that ship has sailed.

I did the half at NC in 2016. That wind on the bike was brutal. I expended far too much energy passing draft packs which killed my run.

Just re calibrate your expectations. If you think of it as a great big sportive then you'll accept that there are 1000's of randomly skilled people on the road and not enough room for everyone to enjoy the draft-free experience.

I raced a 70.3 once where if you could do a sub 5:30 then you got to go in the front wave, just after the pros. So even with my comedy swim speed I was soon able to find pretty open roads. They should do that option all the time.
