For me, I like tying my shoes (I don't wear slip one) and writing checks to pay bills.

Like writing checks too. Reminds me I've got money going out. I use cash too. Spend less when using cash. I like writing and receiving letters.

I love chopping and stacking wood. I can do it all weekend and not be bothered.

I'd rather hear the soft glide of a hand plane rather then the banshee like 90db drone of my DeWalt thickness planer.

Over Easter I broke up a 25' x 25' 4" thick concrete slab in my back yard with a sledge hammer and wrecking bar rather then spend the $100 on a jackhammer rental. That one was definitely a stupid decision.

I write checks too, in large part because I'm conservative about online banking risk.

Shovel snow rather than use a snowblower.

Not always, but I change the oil in my car when I have the time to do it.

Go to the local bookstore even when I could get the book more cheaply online.

That is a sad state of affairs that no one else can drive manual. I don't like to drive but manual makes it more enjoyable. I know when my son starts to drive in a few years he is going to learn to drive a manual. Like it or not.

- I don't own a cell phone because I have a phone at work and a landline at home and don't want anyone to reach me if I'm not at either one of those places.
- I have a microwave (for guests) but have never used it.
- I got rid of a coffee machine with a set timer and just use a French Press.
- I walk or bike to work, to church, doing groceries and running errands, anything in the city.

Now, get off my lawn !!!

  • Manual transmission
  • Raking leaves
  • Using a telephone to talk with
  • Writing letters/ thank-you notes and mailing them (in spite of my loathing all things associated with -7)
  • Using cash. Until my recent trip to Italy I have never used an ATM... ever. Used it once to get Euros in Rome and plan on never doing it again. The lady at the bank was incredulous that I had no idea how to use one. Pin? Yeah, I use 'em to place numbers on my jersey.

Anyway for me it's the dishwasher. I like washing dishes, I find it therapeutic. I'm also in the manual transmission crowd. And I also like ironing my clothes, I'll use the dry cleaners for real formal affairs but generally do my own slacks and dress shirts.

Printing out boarding passes. At least I know the battery in the paper won't die before i get to the jetway :)

I use the phone for other stuff, to pay at coffee shop, movie tickets, etc. Just don't like it for boarding passes for some reason (and honestly, the way people hold their phone too close, or too far, or accidentally minimize the screen and have to pull it back up... it's just PITA sometime).

And I HATE writing checks.

I recently discovered e-book rentals from the public library. You do have to physically go in to a branch to get a library card/account, but once you have it, you can check out titles online and have them delivered to your iPad or Kindle device for free. Most e-books you can keep for 21 days, they they are automatically "returned" - no action on your part. Did I mention it's 100% free? I can't believe I didn't know about this before.

I like to use over-the-air radio (and TV) rather than streaming, including occasionally trying to tune in overseas shortwave...rather ridiculous when you can stream the same but I still find it cool.

I shave with a safety razor and brush on shaving cream...although it's as much a matter of being too cheap to buy the multi-blades as it is a preference. I have an electric which I like but it's useless for shaping a beard/mustache.

I mow with a push/reel mower when I don't have to bag.

I print photo's and hang them on the wall instead of keeping them in my phone or digital picture frame or whatever.

Dying skill in the US. I know in Europe, manual transmissions are still the majority..at least my friends from there tell me so.

I learned on a three on a tree. Never see those anymore. Both my daughters learned to drive on a manual transmission. Its a good skill to have. Even more of a rarity in girls in the US these days.

True... I just returned from Spain and the rental was manual. It had a feature I didn't know existed. When at idle in neutral waiting for a light the engine shuts off. Its a fuel saving feature and it freaked me out the first time I discovered it.

Went to Australia a few years back and rented a little manual transmission jeep. Now *That* was fun, driving on the right and shifting with the left hand. At least the pedals were the same as we have here :)

Grew up driving a manual (first 3 cars) and glad never to have to do so again on a day to day basis in city traffic.

Holy shit, you could be me.

I typed up a response earlier mentioning driving stick and washing dishes - including the therapeutic part - but got distracted and didn't post it. I didn't grow up with a dishwasher in the house (parents still don't own one) and I HATED doing dishes then, but for some reason I enjoy it now. When we visit my parents I actually look forward to helping them wash and dry the dishes after meals, it's good for conversation time with them.

My wife also gave up ironing my clothes years ago because I'd just re-iron them again anyway before wearing.

I worked with a woman several years ago who was trying to buy a bigger house but couldn't get approved. She probably earned $55k a year, and her husband around $30k with a military pension to boot.

She said that they had looked at their credit card bill and discovered that they had spent $1500 eating out in the first three weeks of that month. We probably don't spend that much eating out in a year - especially if you remove vacations.

I love...

* Buying entire albums instead of singles, because I appreciate artists who write for a cohesive album.

* High quality leather boots that can be resoled instead of replaced.

* Making coffee through manual pour over methods instead of a machine and buying beans from roasters who have a direct connection with the farmer as much as possible.
It's
* Making my own tomato sauce from scratch in large batches with seasonal ingredients instead of jarred stuff.
O
* Supporting local restaurants whenever going out instead of chains that are a known thing.

* Actually talking to my neighbors physically instead of through a screen.

* Real paper books. I read a ton, use my Kindle a little, but mostly purchase used paper books because I love the tactile feel, the scent of the paper, and taking notes in the book by hand. It means I have to carry more weight in books, but it's worth the effort.

* Life with real relationships and no social media. I killed Facebook recently and it's awesome. I only worry about the people I see and contact through real mediums. It is weird how much I'm unaware of with groups & events planned through FB, but the important people in that stuff will adjust to me not being on, otherwise there's nothing for me to miss just for the sake of having fake connections.

I love this thread, even though I'm late.

- manual transmission! (and female) self taught at that.
- raking, shoveling snow. I used to have a reel mower but my boyfriend flipped out and replaced it with a gas powered one.
- depositing checks at ATM. yes, atm's are a modern convenience but I don't frequent locations with ones that accept deposits, so I end up carrying paper checks around with me for weeks until I can get to a bank when open. I have never deposited a check by taking a photo of it. This is a modern convenience I want no part of.
-definitely take stairs when it's a viable option. (currently rehabbing from hip surgery and climbing tall flights in industrial buildings with the step then meet method is brutal on my non-op leg).

To breathe, to feel, to know I'm alive.

Driving a manual transmission.
Washing and ironing my bedding and clothing. I never use dry cleaners.
Cleaning wood floors with a bucket and rag.
Cooking my own meals or for friends. I never understood the concept of a potluck when food comes from a supermarket deli or restaurant.
Washing my cars. I have not gone through a car wash since I started to drive.
Replacing small parts on my cars.
Clearing out the yard and pulling weeds.
Washing dishes by hand instead of using an automatic dishwasher.
Handwriting letters and sending them by post.
Hanging laundry to dry when it is warm outside.
Reading a paper book instead on electronical ones.
Having and talking to real friends.
Writing checks to pay bills. I do not do online banking or use an ATM card.

prior: 1990 nissan 240sx, 2000 audi tt.
current: 2013 volvo c30.
The last is the only car I purchased new and they had to search inventory in alternate states to get it b/c, 1) few people want a stick and 2) model was discontinued right before I bought it. shame too b/c I was looking forward to picking it up in Sweden.

oh, and i have 3 friends (all female) driving honda fit's with manual transmissions. (gutless underpowered cars, those fits!!)

To breathe, to feel, to know I'm alive.

Handwritten political rants mailed to strangers, written under a pseudonym. Lavender room the way it was in the 50's.

Hand polished shoes and mechanical shifting. Honest machinery!

I prefer all the modern conveniences.

I use my debit card for everything. I NEVER write checks, thats archaic.
I get the paper on my ipad.
I hate driving a stick, even though I can.
I love my timed coffee machine. I wake up and the coffee is alrerady brewing. Ah!
I use the computer for as much as I can. Including ST
I have a rake and broom, but use the blower for everything I can.
I have an automated pool cleaner.
I love the side monitor on my Mazda.

So much more about todays technologies to love

Absolutely hate automatic transmissions, especially living in the mountains. More power, more control and a hell of a lot more fun to drive.

Still write checks
Still write thank you cards and send letters
Pull the weeds by hand in the yard. While I have a push gas mower, everything else I do by hand
I like washing dishes, my father also did this to help my mom, and when he got older it helped with his arthritis, so it reminds me of him.
On trips I will write out directions instead of GPS
Read the newspaper and use the local library a lot.
I wish I had a manual car, I miss those.

Wife and I have 4 vehicles, two are manual, two are automatic. One is my classic toy car, the other manual is my 06 Dodge Ram diesel truck. I prefer the manual for towing, I like to have the truck in the gear I want rather than trying to get the computer to shift to the gear I want. Ram still makes their diesel trucks with a manual although they are getting harder and harder to find. I will confess that for the daily commute, the auto trans is nice. But for towing and having fun I prefer my manuals.

Other than that I guess I am pretty modern.

Amen. In addition to feeling like you are actually driving, I am convinced it makes you a more engaged and attentive driver.

I have heard anecdotally, that this is the case ( and also over all better drivers). But it also could be because the people these days who tend to buy manual transmission cars do really enjoy driving and actually being engaged in the process of driving whereas strangely, considering the risks involved and the intricacy of it all many drivers seem to be disengaged from the process of driving.
