Hard core running stroller?
I'm 26 weeks pregnant and a pro triathlete. As soon as I'm able to get this kid outdoors, I'd like to start my run training again! I'm hoping to work my way back up to some pretty intense workouts, so I want a bad-ass running stroller, not some run-of-the-mill "jogging stroller" sold at baby stores.

What's the best one? Thanks!

I have found it is quite difficult doing any type of high intensity workout with a running stroller. The issue for me is having to keep one hand on the stroller so it kind of screws up my running stride and throws off my arms.
I would get a good running stroller and save the hard stuff for when the husband/boyfriend/SO/grandparents/anyone you can sucker into taking care of your child, is taking care of the baby. :)

My son's BOB Revolution stroller is nicer than some cars I've owned.

The BOB Ironman with the slick wheels is hands down the best for runners. It's been a few years since I did my research, but it was the lightest of all the other major brands I looked at, was one of the only ones with slick tires instead of knobbies, and has the locked front wheel which is an absolute necessity for running with any speed. Maybe some others have stepped up their game in the last few years, but mine handles just fine up to 6:00/mi. I've always felt like the traffic on the trail/path was a bigger hinderence to speed that the stroller itself was.

Make sure you use the wrist strap and strap it to the bottom bar (axel) not the handlbar.

I found the Bobs run strollers to be great too, and still going strong 7 years later. I am not fast by any means, but just getting in run volume with a stroller might be a bit more realistic- I too loose my arms with the stroller. A good treadmill (if you can stomach treadmill running) will help get in training (tempo/interval work)that you can do during kid naps/sleep time/play time etc... Good luck.

Get a Chariot jogger/stroller/bike trailer, we use the cougar. But to make it a bad-ass running stroller, you gotta get this (gotta use it with a fully 'fixed' front wheel jogger, it won't work with the bob joggers).

Do it and you will become a faster runner than you were before. Trust me.

the BOB is definitely badass
if you wanna spend the doughnuts, the Chariot is also sweet (but way pricey) especially if you wanna pull it behind your bike eventually. You can even x-country ski with it if you live in snow country.

+1 for the Chariot. Best stroller we bought (and we have 4 in total!)

I'm no pro (far from it) but we use the Chariot for running, walking, and biking.

We have the stroller attachment, jogging attachment, and the bike attachment.

Expensive but holds good value on the resale side of things.

Lots of accessories available for it.

Love my Chariot for its functionality but it is many pounds heavier and harder to steer (low center of gravity) than my Baby Jogger Performance Series, which practically pushes itself. I am so glad they've brought back the stripped down truly-meant-for-running model ($430). I have an older one, but this new one looks much improved with the padded straps, better sunshade, and lighter wheels. Whatever you pick, you want big light wheels, slick pneumatic tires, no cluttery storage compartments (you can remove them on some strollers) and I much prefer the fixed steering over swivel wheels.

Also, with a fixed front wheel I see no reason you shouldn't throw three disc wheels on it. 12" latex tubes as well.

What about pulling a little red wagon from a waist strap? Just be careful when slowing down until baby knows how to man the wagon brakes too.

I agree with this, but the catch is the bike. Your better off using babysitting time for the bike. Running (even workouts) is no problem, you just have to adjust your times, especially when hills are involved. You'll think you are not fast anymore and that you suck (at least I did), but when I finally got to run baby free I was plenty fast.
Good luck and congratulations

I'm not pregnant nor am I a pro triathlete, but as a new dad of a now 1.5 year old toddler, I have to say that the BOB was absolutely crucial for me to stay in shape.

I used to wonder why people even bothered taking their infant/toddler on runs - now I know. If you don't, you will NEVER get any exercise if you or your spouse works full time. Plus, it's a great way to get the kid settled for a much-needed nap. It's a win for all - spouse gets private time (which you'll find incredibly rare once the baby arrives), you get a workout, and the baby gets a great nap and sightseeing and is much happier when your're back.

I use the BOB Revolution and it's been pretty much perfect. Fast, easy to control, has a front wheel that can be locked for running or swivel for walking (key), and packs flat in one second (literally). If airplane traveling, the wheels come off near instantly as well, as all are quick releases.

I've taken it on pretty gnarly trail runs with 2,000+ feet of climbing, 20%+ incline in some places. It has shock, so it'll absorb everything. Pretty much, if you can walk two abreast on it, you can roll over it with the BOB. (Note that singletrack is the main difficulty, as it's too narrow for the BOB.)

My only caveat with stroller running - it's a GREAT power/cardio workout, but doesn't get your leg turnover going to max, even if you do speedwork. To maintain your stroller-free speed, make sure you throw in periodic non-stroller hard intervals. I lost the top end of my 5k speed despite running like 9-10 hrs per week with the stroller, including 'stroller intervals' which are harder than regular intervals. I actually think climbing with a stroller is a blend between bike climbing and running (but closer to running) as you have to generate more power than you normally would in regular running.

It takes a few sessions to get used to, but the BOB is awesome. Oh, as well, I would absolutely get the sun-shield. The weather shield isn't as important (overheats, can't use in warm weather), but the sun shield is crucial for keeping the rays off the delicate infant. It works great.

Good luck - I suspect you'll stay in remarkably good shape with the BOB or similar

Put me in the Chariot Cougar camp. I would try the jogging fixed wheel a try but I prefer their runner attachment instead(you strap the chariot around the waist and pull the chariot behind). Hands free and with Chariot's adjustable suspension, Ive ran on trails without an issue. Oh and the cycling and skijorring attachments are awesome. Well built with well thought out design-albeit quite costly.

Last note, with the infant attachments I was able to take my kid out at 4 weeks of age(baby bivy).

Stay witha fixed wheel. I've got a single bob fixed wheel, dual bob swivel wheel, and a double cougar. I'll have good and bad, for strait running, the single bob is the best! The double gets a little squirrelly at a 6:30 pace. As for the cougar, I don't like the handle hight for jogging. Hope this helps good luck

But...

Bob Revolution is not only an awesome running stroller with the front wheel fixed, but with the front wheel left to swivel it is a great "regular" stroller. Other than a very inexpensive umbrella stroller that we never use, it's the only stroller my wife and I have used for our nearly 2 year old.

Just get it. You won't be sorry.

(btw, if you buy the car seat adapter make sure the car seat you buy fits. we used the peg perego and that was great too.)

And lastly, CONGRATS! Best of luck.

It goes on the bottom bar in case you trip and fall. You'll be lying on the ground when the strap stops the jogger. If it's hooked to the top bar it will tip the jogger over backwards.

Also, I never tried doing short intervals with it, but I've been doing solid tempo runs with my BOB for 7 years now (2 kids).

My Chariot instructions specifically say in about a dozen places never to run with the CC harness. I wondered about doing this too, and am not really sure what the reason might by (I assume they think there's a steering/tipping issue with wheels vs. skis). Doesn't mean I agree, but I wouldn't want anyone to be confused that there's an actual Chariot front running harness out there.

Hi,

The real bad ass stroller would be, in my opinion ( since I run one myself), the Chariot CX. Depends though on where your located. They´re not as great in the summer as in the winter but still super versatile and virtually an all terrain vehicle.

I run 3 times a week with my daughter who's now 14 months. 15-25K per wo. She sleeps like a log for the whole run up to 2h. Tempo runs I do with the jogger. For speed work I find a spot where no one else is in sight and do HARD 200m sprints back and forth so I'm always in hearing and seeing distance from the kid.

I have a CX2 so that I can bring both kids ( the other on 4yo) which makes for great hill workouts :)

The trick is to run not directly behind the the jogger but to the side of it, holding with just one hand, and then switching sides from time to time. If the handlebar doesn't allow that you could attach a regular mtb bull horn to it. The CX doesn't have that problem though.

It also have plenty of storage for emergency kits like diapers, baby food, and drinks!

I know the woman who came 8th at Abu Dhabi this year and I know she also has the CX.

Good luck, and congrats on the prgnancy!

So this is a story that needs to be told - even if it is not really a specific stroller recommendation.

Last weekend I was out for a run here in Boulder and I running along the Wonderland lake path I saw a woman pushing
a baby jogger up ahead. I figured I catch her fairly quickly, but no.

Heading South there is a respectable hill and I figured I would certainly catch her right away when the trail turned up , but not so much. Torn between
the shame of losing ground to a woman pushing a baby jogger up the hill, or the 'Cat 6' move of racing against the person ahead on a training run -
I pushed harder with my HR heading to the red zone.

Halfway up the hill - she cracked! I started to make up some real ground and soon was running on her heels ready to make a pass. That is when
I realized she HAD JUST TAKEN A PHONE CALL AND WAS CHATTING AWAY LIKE SHE WAS LEANING ON THE FENCE. So it seems her conversational pace is
quite literally about an 8min mile, uphill with a toddler, at altitude.

I tipped my cap as I finally caught her, (she even had breath to say hi to me as I went by) and went on my way. FWIW I think it was a BOB stroller.

We use a BOB Revolution b/c we wanted a dual-use stroller. It is an awesome walking stroller with the front wheel set to swivel. It's a good, but not spectacular, running stroller with the wheel locked. My main issue is that you have to set the tracking knob on the locked front wheel juuuuuust right or the stroller will pull to one side or the other as you run, taking small bits of your sanity with it each time.

Also, you mentioned wanting to run train as soon as you can get the kid outdoors. Talk to the kid's doctor about when it is reasonable to start running with a stroller. They have to be able to support their heads, and even then the doc may want you to wait a while longer due to the jostling of some stroller runs.

Is that the Infant Sling? Even their own website recommends not running with one until they're 6 months old, and only on smooth pavement to age 1: http://www.chariotcarriers.com/...sh/html/faqs.php#ck2

I know the manufacturers will tend to err on the conservative side when recommending age of use. I'm sure in some cases less than the recommended age is fine. I'm equally sure that in at least a few cases the manufacturer's recommended age is the appropriate age. That's why I think a conversation with the pediatrician is a good idea.

For anyone interested, I have a used Bob Ironman Stroller, barely used for running, its about 2 years old, and would be willing to part with it pretty cheap, problem is the shipping. I live in LR Arkansas. I have no idea what to price it for. I would not want to ship this heavy bastard. I'm about to put it in the major newspaper classifieds. I also have that gizmo you strap around your waste where you can run with it without holding onto it with your hands.

I used it, but on recommendation of the peds, waited until the infant was 3 months old before using it. Worked great - I'd definitely get something with a sunshield though, as the baby gets totally exposed without it.

Totally disagree with this. There are some limitations in the top speed leg turnover, but it's compensated in large part for the increased power you get from pushing the stroller which really shows on hill climbs without the stroller.

For endurance type long runs, it's every bit as good as regular running AND you get the added storage space which is really handy on those 15+ milers.

It does take some getting used to doing fast intervals with a stroller, which I've found is pretty important to staying near your top speed with stroller running. I think most people with strollers give up on speedwork, and then blame the loss of speed upon the stroller, when it's really the lack of speedwork. I do 400s and 800s with the stroller, and I'm amazed how strong I feel when I go stroller free, particularly on climbs of any length.

The BOB also has a bar you can attach to lock on your infant carrier (the removable one you use as a carseat). You have to buy it separately. I used it and it was fine. Don't remember how early I used it, but of course I followed the peds advice.

We got the attachment that allows you to attach the infant car seat into the stroller. With the shocks on the stroller and that car seat the baby was super safe. He got more bouncing around in the car than in that stroller. Plus, between the shade on the stroller and the shade on the car seat, I could completely cover him up. I even ran in the colder weather him and a blanket and he slept heavy. I checked in the "cocoon" and it was super warm in there. I think I took him 13 miles that day. Anyway, big fan of the stroller and the infant car seat attachment.

To revive this thread and get some of you stroller jogger folks' opinions:

I'm in the throes of research. It looks like Bob Ironman vs Chariot Cougar or Chariot CX2. I need a double (twins, 6 mo old)

I have a lot of store credit at a place that sells all three, so price is not the deciding factor, per say.
It will only be used for jogging (or if Chariot, for biking too).

The CX2 and BOB Ironman have a brake. I think the bob is front wheel, but the CX two is rear disc brakes or drum brakes. Do I need a brake?

I will primarily be using it in the 2 lane wife paved 3.3 mile loop in the park across from my apartment. There are hills.
I will also race with.
I train at a 6:xx pace generally, so I know I'll be slower with the stroller but not 10:xx slow.

I'm really tired of researching the hell out of this, but I take a while to make decisions, especially given the cost of all these! I'm getting fat while researching and not running!

Suggestions based on the above?

BOBs are a good product. Like any stroller, be smart. Wear the wrist strap and take care in turning with it. I have had some good runs with my my BOB and BOB double when kids were younger. In fact, I won a 5K using a BOB double with more than 50 lbs of kids in it! And no, there was not a stroller division. Although I took a bit of ribbing from the pre-race announcer as I postioned myself towards the front. So yes, you can run hard with them. It was a flat course. Hills and headwinds are a lot more challenging when you are running hard.

Had an older S.U.S. BOB Ironman. Didn't like it so we returned it and got a Chariot Cheetah 2 (just came in yesterday). We elected for the infant seat instead of the infant sling. It was the cheaper chariot and seemed fine for our needs.

We had a Chariot Cougar with the baby sling, so you can use that when your new arrival is about 2 months old (I think), then as he/she can sit-up, you remove the sling. I trained long and hard while our oldest was 3-9 months, this way - (to a top 10 IM finish). All you have to do for high intensity training is go up a hill. Running on the flats doesn't hurt your stride or technique, you barely notice it! No need to overthink it. When out next daugter came along, we bought the double Chariot CX with brakes etc. and moved the sling into that for the young one and the older one rides along as well. Now you're talking some good strength and power training - and your still outdoors, running! Personally, I wouldn't get the CX again - too many bells a whistles. With both of our Chariots, we used them as bike trailers with the girls - Dad running, Mum riding along with the kids and vise versa. Chariots are very versatile in that way! All the best in the coming months!

Hands down the best one on the planet has to be the Chariot CX-1. (Or CX-2 if you plan to have another baby). Yes, it's more expensive by magnitudes of order than all the rest, but there is a reason why! We have the CX-1 with the bike, running, hiking and XC ski attachments. It's hands down the best of the group. A bit heavier than many, but the drum brakes NEVER fail to grip and the suspension soaks up nearly all the road bumps for sleeping babies. The discriminating folks will find the trim level to be higher end than the Cougar level by Chariot. INterior materials are a lot nicer on the CX versus the Cougar. They make all kinds of baby and infant slings to protect them when younger than most other strollers even consider possible. We started running with the baby in the stroller at 6 months old and use the hiking rickshaw attachment until we can take her out on the bike in about another 3 months. We are waiting until she can hold her head up with a helmet on before we take her out on the bike.

The best prices are found here:

I got a 2nd hand Baby jogger and ran with it, the dog and the kid from when she was two weeks old. Dog on a waist lead on the left, Baby jogger on the right with one hand. Kid needed a bit of padding around the head for the first few months, but otherwise it was great. Lightweight, rolled like a dream on road or unsealed track and the bigger the wheels the better. No steering meant more stable rolling at higher speed and its as simple as tilting and redirecting the front wheel when needed.

We have the Bob Revolution double stroller. Its fantastic...used it with both kids (2.5 years and 7 months) in a 5k last weekend with no issues. It probably gets used on a training run once a week, and I couldn't be happier with it.

I had a BOB Revolution single and when we had our second kid, I got a double. I think they are great strollers and pretty easy to run with. The big benefit with the Revolution is that the front wheel can be locked into a fixed position for running (to let it track better) and easily release to swivel when you are walking or need manueverability (mall/park/etc). The wheel on a swivel sucks for running, but my wife who is not a runner detests using the stroller with the wheel fixed when taking the kids out. So one tool, works for both of us (and admitadly when I have the kids out not for a run, the fixed wheel is a bit of a pita).

can't seem to find it. Do they still sell this one?
Two weeks sounds early? What's the general consensus. I'll be facing the issue shortly as well

Another vote for the Chariot CX1. We have a nine month old and right now have the stroller, running, and bike attachments. We started running with him in there at around two months (in the infant sling at first and now in the baby seat) and recently started riding with him. The suspension works really well, there's a billion options for climate control and shading, and the kid just LOVES it. This winter we will most likely get the ski attachment. We have also most recently used it as a wheelbarrow to get camping gear back to a campsite. Seriously, that thing is worth it's weight in gold! I have never ran with a Bob but my understanding is that the Bob's might be a better running stroller if ALL you want to do with it is run ... but if you have any thoughts of getting a bike trailer too (and don't underestimate the workout of pulling a kid in a Chariot uphill on a bike ... ouch!) then the Chariot seems like the way to go.

Yes, they are expensive but for us it has been totally worth it because we use it a TON. We bought the body with a 20% off coupon at REI which took the sting out a bit and my understanding is that the resale value is really good. Hell, I'd get a Chariot over a crib if it came down to it ... the kid can sleep in the Chariot. I'm kidding ... sort of. ;)

I don't know if they make it anymore, but we had a trek dash pro. It had amazing suspension. I could use it on roads and trails. It had great storage. I used to do all my runs with my daughter in the jogger. We put 10000 miles on that thing in about 5 years! Good luck, and congrats:)

Not sure where you are but I'm in Oz and it's a few years back now so not sure what you'll have available, but I'd be looking for something with a fixed front wheel and the bigger the better if you want to run a fair bit. The kid was about 8 weeks old when this one was taken.

My obo did tell me not to drive for a few weeks as I had a C section but he didn't mention anything about running :-) I felt good to go after two weeks so I did. I was running until I was about 6 months duffed and was swimming and doing yoga to the bitter end so I was in pretty good shape. Listen to your own body would be my recommendation. If you feel OK, give it a go - if you feel a bit knocked around, take it easy for a bit longer and ease back in.

Our Bob Revolution SE single stroller has been great. I'll second what another poster wrote earlier. Not only do we use the Bob for running, but we also use it as our 'regular' stroller. One of the best buys we've made.

Hi, I saw your post about an attachment for the cougar that allows you to pull the stroller. Do you have a link? I've been looking for this option.

Kind regards,
misko

I'm looking for a jogging stroller for our new addition to the family. I found a great review, https://thetriathletehub.com/best-jogging-stroller/ however, we have a britax car seat already and want to make sure they work with Bob strollers. Has anyone had any issues with attachments on the Bob jogging strollers? thanks.

Another Bob owner. Our kids are grown now, but are trying to give ours away.

We have the one with the front/back double capability and own the bottom/rear extra seat and sun visor.

Wife and I trained together for a little fund raiser 1/2 run that she put on. We'd swap who had to push every so many miles.

You should be able to find online which car seats they are compatible with. The older Bob's had different adapters for each of the major car seat brands. Not sure of the newer models.

The thing to be careful of when using a car seat in a Bob is the much higher center of gravity makes them a little tippy. Unlike other people, I chose to run with the Bob Revolution front wheel unlocked as I like the maneuverability compared to a tradition fixed front wheel. I never dumped it over, but you do have to be a bit more careful rounding corners.

They have some suggestions on how old the baby needs to be before you take them out, but if you are running on a smooth flat path then it is just as gentle as a car ride.

I believe the Britax is the only one that will work with the Bob now.

We never went that route, since we had a Maxi-Cosi car seat. We put her in the stroller at 6 weeks (walking) and the doc gave us the go ahead to run her at the 3 month visit (her neck was pretty strong already).

Our little one has done up to a 1/2 marathon in the stroller. She used to love it, until my mom bought her a "mini Bob" for her baby doll, now she won't run in the stroller, she has to push her own.

Think long and hard about the Revolution Pro if you do any real training... The adjustable handle makes it really easy to get comfortable pushing it, and the brakes are better. Get ready to get faster, that thing is a giant parachute into the wind, and hills, ugh.

10km uphill, 12km back to the car - in 30 celcius

8 month old fat baby + Bob Rev + capsule + baby crap (diapers, bottles, clothes, wipes, etc) so didnt work out too light either...

Can recommend the Bob.
