Welcome to periodic updates from the USA's toughest Duathlon.

Beautiful morning here in New Paltz. NY for the first Spring running of AZ. Current temp is 44 degrees, the sun is out and the racing is going to be hard.

Long course athletes go off in 35 minutes.

Stay tuned for updates and some commentary from your recently injured smack talker Dave Roche.

PS - Tetsuoni says he nor I will not accept any blame for what Roche may say

15 minutes until the start of the long course. Lots of nervous energy and dumb questions.

Chris G says he plans to win it all

Later today KingMurphy's Law will resort back to non king status as he is doing middle course F1 this year.

Who will be the new king and queen. ML was both

Good luck to everybody today. After ~60 miles on the bike yesterday followed by only a 4 mile run, I'm glad I bailed the race -no matter how many ICBs there were going to be!

middle course has started wit the mighty tetsuoni in the field as well as the king murphy's law.

Long coursers have just started arriving into t1

Ben Leese (31:52) had a healthy lead followed by

josh beck
rick fesler
chris martin
john phillips

all seperated by a few minutes

The story will be how fast can josh ride today and can anyone stay with him

middle course first run update

john hirsch was in first @ about 34:40

Followed closly by KML who wants annother title

In third about a day behind was our very own race director Tetsuoni. Jon and D Roche hugged a bit when they saw each other

Short course athletes are out on the run. The sc started a tad late as one athlete was in the dumper. I won't mention him by name but his son just broke his collarbone.

The sun is starting to warm things up. Not southern cali warm but catskills NY warm

We are now in the quiet time as just about everyone is out on the bike course. Middle courses should be back in about 30 minutes or so to start run number 2. We'll see then if ML has staked his claim for the crown for the F1.

Speaking of F1 if you are in Western NY next weekend check out one of the fatest and nicest F1's around, The Rochester Spring Classic Duathlon. F1 and Super Sprint options. I think it is in year 8 this year. You'd think I'd know since I'm the RD but after a few hundred races things get blurry, kinda like Tetsuoni after AZ.

Run on trails, bike on rolling country roads. www.yellowjacketracing.com

FYI Ladies - D Roche in boxer briefs is not a pretty picture. But he is going to be a lawyer

Rumor is that Josh Beck is in the lead after a 1:19 first lap on the bike. I'll do the math for you. That equals FAST

Yes, I gave Boots a show today. No, he didn't have to pay the usual going rate of a back-rub to see me in undershorts.

Who am I kidding, the only person in the Pavilion that wanted to see that was probably ML and his limp-wristed salute :) On a serious note, congrats to the awesome racers (who also happen to be awesome people). Cassie (surprisingly, not a hoser), Chris G (3rd age!), ML (2nd overall F1!), Tri_yoda (SC winner!), Tetsuoni (great guy and better RD), and my dad (the dumper!) were amazing. It was great meeting them, and seeing them crush some dreams on the course!

And yes, that was a Cosmo I was drinking after the 2 hour trainer ride. After 2, I just wanted to dance! Hopefully ML didn't mind the grinding...

^^yep, planter last season. can't risk losing ski season, so started f'ing around w/ these a few weeks ago..

would have ben nice to have minimal trail shoes, but i can't spend money now, ski season is right around the corner.

not the best choice for the run, feet were sore, kicked rocks a few times, but if i had 3 years in them and not 3 weeks, i think i would be happy.

i assume a upper body injury in the crash?

I will edit my post to now read as follows:

What an awesome day today. Just wanted to thank CM2 Promotions for putting on such an amazingly well run event. Congratulations to everyone who raced, and a big congratulations to Dave Roche, who despite broken bones and assorted bumps and bruises, showed up to cheer everybody on, did a 2 hour trainer ride at a purported 700 average watts without even breaking a sweat, wrestled a bear, and then free climbed the cliffs of Minnewaska using his one good arm. Chuck Norris dreams that he could be Dave Roche, even if he could only experience that greatness for a nanosecond. It was great to see the Slowtwitch crowd there.

I hope that is better for ya.

I am not an animal, I am a man!

HUGE props to Josh Beck for utterly destroying the LC record, and taking back the crown that was and is so rightfully his.

When he rode by me and Jon as we were going up past the Gunks, he pretty much humiliated us, and wasn't even trying. I think he was quite literally going 2x as fast as we were, and it was only our 2nd bike lap, vs. his third.
Chris came by shortly thereafter to yet again separate the weak from the chafed, etc.

It was great "fun" dueling mano-a-mano w/ Mr. Hirsch for over 4.5 hours.

Yoda - I want my trophy!!! I virtually smacked you down in SC with my first R/B/R splits. At least you didn't get chicked - unlike every other remedial course racer.

Also, if blades of steel did not decide that an extra climb was called for he woulda shoulda crushed yodas dreams as well. 31:xx is just flying there.

Besides my second "run" was faster that Yoda's and I drank way more than him after.

Yoda is the short bus king. I'm also the SC king, as I beat him (like a rented mule) w/ my first 3 splits.

Chris G made a good point about me racing against Jon Hirsch - he said, "he's got his own name in the website on his jersey; you have somebody else's name on the website on your jersey."

Which is (mostly) true - but I looked at my kit a little more closely, and here's the website address on it:
www.TetsuoniIsMLsBeyatchYetAgain.com

A shout out to Mimi Boyle, who is the Josh Beck of the fairer sex. Too bad Tamela wasn't there to make her work for it this time, she pretty much dominated.

And yes, that was a Cosmo I was drinking after the 2 hour trainer ride.

Hey Dave, you figured you should just admit it before I shared the pic??? :)

I also have photographic evidence that ChrisG was drinking cosmos with Dave. He will deny it and say that he was just holding MY cosmo, but who would you believe..... a lawyer or an accountant???

Great to meet everyone in person today! The gearing advice was perfect, as was the advice to take in the scenery. Just breathtaking!

I will not deny that I had a sip of the very warm cosmo that had been in your car all day and was willing to pose for pics with it. Where are all the pics from the pavilion anyhow?

Thanks to everybody who helped put on this event. hands down the best run and most fun/painful race I have participated in.

F1 took me to into uncharted territory. Things got dark on the third run. Huge props to the long course guys.

I am busy logisticizing how Kathy & Cathy can take a train into NYC tomorrow and still make it back to Ontario by oh say 2am tomorrow night before the husbands notice we are late getting home :)

So nice to know you care!

I have seriously just got home from the single best race experience of my entire sporting life. No question whatsoever. The atmospehere, food, scenery, beer - completely unprecedented as far as I'm concerned.

As for the race, the gulf between myself and the four guys up front, on the bike especially, was huge and I'm kind of glad about that because it meant I never had to worry about whether I should try and keep up with them as they swept past me - it was never gonna happen and left me to just ride my own race. From the second bike loop on it was an absolute sufferfest but it'll be Wednesday before I flush out the last of these endorphins - just awesome.

Don't intend to move much tomorrow so I'll post a proper report then but congrats to everyone who raced today - hope you all had as much fun as I did.

I still don't recall anyone who has done AmZof not really digging it.
Yeah, it's really hard, and it hurts a lot, and there's nowhere to hide, and you can't just cruise or shuffle along in z2 and finish.

It's the hard that makes it great.

Glad you could come out and play. See you next time.

Simply Brutal. I felt every painful inch of that course over and over again. The course never gives you a chance to breath. Always up up up up up up up. That has got to be one of the toughest races in the country. Loved every second. Outstanding venue. Outstanding job by the RD and race organizers and all those great volunteers strewn all across the gunks until the bitter end. That is the type of race that keeps me racing. Grassroots feel by people that truly believe in the whole scene. No corporate bullshit here. EPIC.

That was a blast! Worth the 7 hour ride to do the F-1 race. As ML (who I got to meet and rack next to) and my coach John Hirsch were duking it out for 1-2 I was stuck in no-man's land in 3rd for much of the race. Gave up on any hope of gaining on them after almost blowing up on 1st big hill on 2nd bike and rode/ran the rest conservatively just to preserve 3rd place. Was doing fine and thought I had no one in site behind me until 1/2 mile to go when heard footsteps on the last downhill and by then I was just cruising in so had to bury myself to not get caught. Collapsed in a heap in the pavilion only to see the person trying to run me down was J. Beck finishing his second loop.
Great race, great course, tough ass day but will be back next year. Only will definitely stay for Sunday night vs a 7 hour drive home...

Def one of the greatest races around!! This was my 4th yr and will continue coming back. I think we need to get the october race back as well. Why not run it twice a year, may/oct. may as IMLP build up and oct for anyone who may have not qualified for kona/clearwater looking for a fall race.

While I really enjoyed everything yesterday, I honestly wish it were in October.

With the foliage and cool fall air, there really is nothing like the Gunks in October. And I agree, it is an excellent Kona/Draftwater alternative for those folks who are up to the challenge.

I know moving to to May was what (supposedly) opened it up to having the F1 format, due to "lesser car traffic", but honestly, I had more issues dealing w/ cars yesterday than in all my prior years combined. Which was probably just my luck, since neither Yoda nor Chris G had similar issues.
Got stuck behind cars both times on the big descent, slowing to a crawl the 2nd time due to the fire truck, ambulance, police cars, etc (I really hope that whomever they were working on is going to be ok), and at the stop sign I had to squeeze by 3 or more cars both times at like 5 mph.
Never had any of that happen before.

OK, on the plus side, the traffic out on the rest of the bike course proper was dramatically less than it would have been in Oct.
Only had one phalanx of Harleys go by, and there was no conga line stacked up trying to get into Minnewaska.

Now... I hadn't thought about doing AmZof in May AND Oct... how awesome would that be?

Thank you! I have raced on 4 continents and this was the toughest course by far I have ever been on...and I did the short course. Far harder than Survival of the Shawangunks, and I thought the short course was harder than a 1/2 ironman. This race was exactly what I was looking for - a really well run, low key, grass roots event, that was a challenge just to finish with amazing scenery. Even the sounds were great - the birds were chirping so loud and I was all alone for the second run, which was a neat experience. This race is really worth travelling for, and I imagine as word of mouth spreads, it will be difficult to get into. I will sign up for next year the first day registration opens. Thanks again - really awesome, fun challenge.

Glad you enjoyed it! Welcome to the cult. We'll teach you the secret handshake next time. ;-)

For anyone who is Garmin-curious, here are the distances I got offa mine from yesterday:
(keep in mind the F1 had to go back into TA both times, whereas the LC racers do have one lap where they skip that, which is of course, a little shorter)

R1 - 4.85m
B1 - 28.68m
R2 - 4.95m
B2 - 28.68m
R3 - 4.87m

Given that the tight twists and turns, and full leaf cover for most of the run course, tend to cause a Garmin to "short" distances a bit, I'm calling it 5m.
The exact distance itself is nearly irrelevant anyway, it's not the "far" that gets ya. ;-)

You're right - it is not the far that gets you. I'm not sure how exactly to approach training for this next year. Training for this run course by just running really does not cut it. The run featured so much side to side running and also a crazy burn in whatever muscle is near my hips on top of my quad as I was taking baby steps in complete oxygen debt up the hills on the run course. And the downhills were no respite since my quads were wrecked from the bike course. So other than training on the course (which is a bit of a hike for me) I'm thinking maybe running repeats up the steep hill on Lake Welch drive in Harriman (though that does not simulate the side-to-side), followed by 3 loops of the Harriman course followed by more running repeats up Lake Welch? Oh well, I'll figure something out -- which is also an appeal of this race.

FWIW, my Garmin showed 5.1mi for the first two laps of the run. Bike laps are consistent with yours.

I was the dude who wiped out twice on the run and had the skidmarks all over the back of my jersey. Still can't get over that run course. Downright devious.

I thought traffic was much lighter this time around. Not sure the time of year makes a big difference, course is just plain hard. I kept passing middle distance people and thinking "you poor son of a bitch, you have to get back on your bike after this", no hollow words of encouragement would have made a difference, just gave them a knowing nod.

Great race, great day, big props to the CM2 folks as usual. One of these days I will be man enough to attempt one of the longer distances.

Yeah devious run. You also had to focus mentally on almost every footstep so you didn't step on a rock, root, rut etc.. Loved crossing the 4 long wood planks and hopping the streams and stuff. Hated, especially the third loop, the "evil rock garden" climb. That's what I
nicknamed the second long trail climb through the boulders and rocks.

I remember you. I was on the black/white orbea and saw the skidmarks in your back. I asked you if you wrecked and you said yeah, twice on the run.

Despite feeling like I've been hit by a truck and having muscles in my legs that I didn't even know I had sore as hell today, can't wait to go back.

Thanks, Boots and Ellen, for yet another consumately professional timing.
Thank you everyone who toed the line and to all the volunteers.
It seems all the time I'm racing AmZof, I want to be race directing, and then once I'm doing that, I want to be back racing.
My daughters are amazed how delirious some of you get up in the woods, late in the race. We just might have to set up a BBQ up there, as a few of you were obsessing over hamburgers - maybe that's what it will take to get glycogen back to the brain?
Of course, the scent of burgers will probably bring on the bears.
Congrats Josh Beck on crushing the course record, and to lovely Mimi Boyle for three-peating. Of all the checks I write each year, those 2 are my favorites.
Thanks, Murphy, for keeping me motivated, and Chris G, "another minute and I would have been chicked" Yoda, Cathy, Roche "pere et fils", and the rest of the ST crew for keeping it fun.
Tommy Keegan says you're all a bunch of nancies for return 3 kegs almost full.
Thanks Mohonk Preserve, Main St. Bistro, Hammer Nutrition and The NY State Troopers.
In case you were worried, the ITT rider who got hit by the car is fine.
Congratulations to a certain lady who not only finished in the money but totally chicked her ex-boyfriend.
Thanks Tom Ganz, Kurtis Nordahl, Lucy, Kaitlin, Erin, Nate, Dr. Costley, Shawn Jackson, Hon. Bill Pape, Jim Kelly Smith, Mary and Linda and especially Gabby Mancuso who held down the ITT fort and wrangled over a dozen volunteers. There are many others to thank; I'll try to get to that on our website.

Great photo and it reminds me of a hilarious moment from the finish line:

So I finally drag myself home close to 8 hours after I set off the last two of which were spent dreaming of beer steins. When I finally stop the quivering in my legs and refocus my vision the first guy I see (I now realize) was tri-yoda looking just like he does in that photo. I point at his beer and croak something along the lines of "Me...want...where..can I get?"

He helpfully replies (I'm paraphrasing but I promise it was close):

"Oh just the GAP - they've got all these cute colours and you can match it with jeans or dress down with shorts - it's so versatile!"

Dude, I was NOT talking about your T-shirt.

On my second run, I was bonking pretty badly....yes, on the SC :(

I came around a corner and saw this huge boulder, almost as tall as me and all over the top of it were tiny (6" tall) inukshuks that hikers had made and left there. There were probably about 30 of them. I actually stopped and started looking at them and thinking "Pretty Inukshuks, I wish I had my camera, how could I take a picture of these, do I have my cell with me to take a picture??"

Then I remembered I was in a race and should probably start moving forward again! Thank goodness we do a figure 8 and come back to the aid station twice during the run loop. I wouldn't have finished my second run without the extra fuel.... and I was even carrying a hand bottle of gatorade....

Chris G warned me going into this race of how hard it was and ,thankfully, convinced me that the short course was plenty hard. My plan going in was to use AZ as a good hard day and follow it up the next day with a long ride at home in preparation for Mooseman. Sadly, it is now 2 days later (and no workout on monday), and I'm still a hollow shell of the man i used to be. My legs are shattered, my ego deflated, my appetite insatiable. I'm completely dreading masters swimming tonight. The only consolation is in knowing that Chris G will be there to commiserate with me...only he'll be in the lane next to me...going much, MUCH slower ;)

Maybe it was just the extra 1.7 miles I decided to add to the 2nd run that sent me over the edge. Yes, that's what it was...I'll stick with that. AZ wasn't that hard.

Perhaps the RD could figure out a way to have an entirely uphill course for next year. As a Clydesdale, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you.

To sum up how hard AZ can be I am still tired and sore and eating like crazy on Tuesday after the event, and I was just timing the damn thing.

AZ is all about you against the course and against yourself. Racing others on this course is tough because

1. the course will beat you first
2. Josh Beck will beat you second (or Mendy Taylor will in the short course, that chick is for real)

For everyone that spent a long day racing in the 'gunks at AZ you are now ready to crush dreams for the remainder of the season. A few days of walking like you have a small animal in your ass will be worth it once you start beating your training partners at the races

Good luck for the rest of 2010

Also thanks to Mr. Law for laying down the law and forcing 5 hours of evil hard racing. Bakker must translate into "never die". I am way more wayward from Am Zof f1 then a half ironman.

It was an honor to run with the 2 of you all the way to the first climb. Luckily, after that I was, ahem, drawn away by my RD duties and got to enjoy the thrilling racing between you two, Josh and Chris in the LC, and Yoda and "mankiller" Mendy in the SC. It was a great AmZof this year. Thanks everyone.

Awesome! That really captures the journey! Is that Johnny Cash singing at the end?

Yup. It's worth seaching youtube for the video you haven't seen it. It's a cover of a nine inch nails song of all things and was recorded just before he died which makes it really affecting

I will. We're working with a new processor so there's been a bit of a delay.

Here is what I want to know--Is the ML ever going to do enough winter training to be ready for a spring long-course race? I don't want to show up only to find out you are going short or middle distance. :)

Uh, nope.

I don't do enough training to do LC in the fall. ;-)

Wouldn't it be interesting if there was an American Zofingen triathlon with a swim for the first leg so we can all laugh, and laugh, and laugh at rock fish Murphy?

Come to the Westchester Toughman. I out swam him and then watched him ride right by me on the bike... And I can't swim either....

Channeling ML here:

"Bwaahahahaha! There IS such a race! It's called SavageMan 70 and I will spot you 10 minutes on the swim. But after biking Westernport Wall, Big Savage Mountain and Killer Miller, there is still a nasty half to run, and I will have the last laugh! We can celebrate your humiliation after the race with a round of AHAA (Almost Heaven Amber Ale) at Mountain State Brewing Company in Deep Creek."

So, September Smackdown?

that would be interesting, especially if the swim was rather long

I guess tetsuoni is reduced to looking for other events (besides his own, of course) at which he has some shred of a chance of beating me. Pretty sad that the former 2x Duathlete of the Year needs a SWIM in order to have a glimmer of hope against me.

PS - I really really do wanna do Savageman one of these years. That thing is right up my alley.
I have a conflict w/ a local event for this year however, so it'll have to wait 'til '11, or beyond...

Would be a great way to book end next season, AmZof LC early and SavageMan 70 late. JM couldn't dodge ya with RD duties at SavageMan either!

Maybe 2011.

I think a partnership series with AmZof and SavageMan makes perfect sense.

Or should we skip it and just award the title to Josh Beck now?

Maybe a healthy cash pot to split between all the competitors who can break 12 hours for the two events combined.

Can't beat those two races for price, venue, challenge, or back to the roots of racing vibe. And earning your brick at the Westernport Wall is cool. Or so I am told.
