What a horrible time for a training camp. Right at the start of tri season (aren't you supposed to prepare in the off season?), right on spring break, and right on Passover.

Cathy,

Thanks for taking the initiative and getting this on the books. April is the perfect time to start training after a cold, Kansas winter. (You remember those, don't ya?) Hope I'll be able to make it this year.

As Erin said, Burbank and Ontario are the closest. However, last year I flew into LAX and the drive to and from Xantusia wasn't bad. I think it took just over 1.5 hours and was quite scenic. Best of all there was an In and Out Burger on the way. For me, financially and planning wise, LAX usually works out best as I can usually find a direct flight on SW so I can travel cheaply with the bike.

Kind of a time I cannot blow my kids off....

Passover is a family holiday - think Easter, Christmas - would you have planned the training weekend over Easter or Christmas? kind of bet not.

It is fine but I won't be able to participate.

Not everyone observes Easter and Christmas. It would have made perfect sense to me to do it on Easter or Christmas since I would be off work anyways and wouldn't have to take time off.

Like pointed out before, there was a poll taken of the team members to see which weekend would work the best and that was the one decided on. Can't make everyone happy.

what are the best airports to fly into? \\

Here is the progression for travelling here..Ontario is the best/easiest/shortest..That is if you can find a cheap/direct flight..It also seems to have the cheapest rental cars, usually can find something for around $15 a day..

Burbank is next best, about another 15 minutes further, and many can find JetBlue flights into there..

Use LAX as last resort, as it is a minium of 95 minutes with no traffic, and I haven't found that time yet. You can count on at least a couple hours during any weekday, but ok on weekends.. Lots of cars there too, check all the cheap internet travel sites..And often you get more direct flights from wherever to LAX, so that has to be factored in..I hate connections, so I will often pay a bit more, or drive a bit more to avoid that hassle...And I'm sure Cathy will have a list of arrivals, so that some carpooling can be arranged...

ANd for those flying, we have some loaner bikes here, so I can save you a couple hundred bucks in flying your hog with you. Depending on how many, I think we have accomidated everyone that wanted a bike over the years, and they are all pretty new bikes..Just got to bring your pedals, shoes, and helmet...Cathy can start a list of you that want one, and your preferred size range...

I'll jump over here from time to time and answer any other questions you might have, looking foreward to another fun weekend....

It's a little known fact that Monty absolutely hates Passover. It's not that he's anti-semitic - far from it. It's the name "Passover" that gets him. It's a harsh, bitter reminder of all the times in his life that he too, was passed over - promotions at work, nominations to the National and Olympic team, the '80 boycott of the Moscow Summer Games, partnering with Dan/Emilio/Gerard in various business ventures, etc. Monty hates this annual reminder of all the times that life shafted him and as such has instigated a ritual of surrounding himself with womens and tequila in those dark hours...

Please respect his wishes and do your part to keep him distracted during this time when he needs his friends the most.

huh???

you all plan a training weekend on Easter. I am jewish know NOTHING about the holiday other than what friends/coworkers and the media tell me. I ASSUMED it was a family deal to have Easter dinner....

YOU planned a training weekend on Easter - what else can I assume other than Easter dinner not so important to be with family?

Passover is VERY much a family event - the seder is children oriented....It would not occur to me to make other plans on it.

I said have fun - stop trying to make me the bad guy

TriToy - don't know if you're purposefully being confrontational but to assume that because a training camp has been planned for the weekend of easter means that easter is not an important family holiday is a stretch. All of us on this forum are in different life stages and not all of us have family nearby to celebrate with, are in school, don't have children, aren't very religious, etc. I realize that the timing on this is not necessarily the best to those who celebrate either holiday but let's not turn this into a Jewish vs. Christian debate.

For the record, I'm Christian and my husband is Jewish and while both Passover and Easter are important to us neither of us live near family nor do we have children - as such, we won't really be celebrating either event.

How am I the bad guy for pointing out that the weekend is on Passover and as it turns out Easter? or then questioning whether Easter is a traditional family time?

Easter *is* a traditional family time for many people, but not everyone. Your posts sound very judgemental and I think you know it. Trying to be coy and wondering why everyone is getting upset is just silly. You are coming off as sounding very high and mighty because YOU are sacrificing your time to spend with your family, but everyone else going to this camp isn't. How awfully grand of you. Also, some of us celebrate Orthodox Easter, which is the weekend afterwards.

Unfortunately I won't be there this year. :( My sister is getting married in Mexico about a week later so April is already pretty booked with travel as I'll be in Mexico for 6 days. But I will second that it is a great time. I went last year for the first time and was really glad I did so if anyone is on the fence I highly recommend it.

I'll be there, camp is something I look forward to every year because it gets better everytime! I should be in better shape this year but I'm still afraid of those hills and the descents. If there wasn't a hot tub to come home to, I might not do some of those rides. Cathy, I might drive down this year, when are you leaving?

I've got a bag of tees and capris that I will be giving out to the ladies. They are screw-ups, victims of the learning curve from screen printing at home. They make great bed time or gardening clothes. I'll also bring all my new stuff, team Xantusia members get 30% off.

How it works:

Show up when you can, hopefully, you can hook up with someone and car pool from the airport. Put your stuff in a room, usually Cathy and Monty work that out, pet some doggies and then either get in the hot tub or go workout. Every day we wake up to Monty's home cooked meals and strong coffee, then we head out for a ride or a run. Depending on how far or fast you go, you go with women of similar interests and abilities. Every other day we drive down to go swim and get lunch out. Otherwise, Monty cooks. When you aren't training you can either socialize, hot tub, drink, or sleep. At the end off camp, we have a big hug fest and drink too much before we all head home teary eyed and tired. Monty likes to entertain us with his glory stories and sometimes there is a male victim I mean male guest that hangs out with us.

You will leave stronger from training and with new friends.

Where: Xantusia (Valyermo, CA).
The best airports are Ontario or Burbank (about an hour), LAX or Long Beach are also options, but are 90 minutes or more (maybe way more depending on traffic).

How much?
$ per/night for accommodations and food to be determined (Gourmet chef and all food and drink are included). $50 deposit due prior. (I'll update this soon.)

What is included?
Accommodations, food, drink, wi-fi internet access (bring your own laptop), open kitchen, but Monty will cook for us. Past menus have included tri tip steaks, Monty's special salmon, lasagne, and all the healthy (and non healthy) trimmings). Perks include hot tub and lots of loving puppy dogs!

What will we do?
Swim, bike, run; socialize; hear stories from Monty and Dan; sit in the hot tub; eat, drink, laugh A LOT; make some fabulous friends.

Do I have to come the entire time?
No, if it doesn't fit your schedule...come one day, two days or all five. If you are local and just want to day trip, train and eat, that's fine too (but RSVP and pay in advance please.)

Is this just for Ironman people?
No! Sprint, Olympic, Ironman, slow, fast, serious, not so serious…something for everyone.

What about us dudes?
Sorry, but no, unless your name is Normann Stadler or you are Swedish.

Do I need to bring my bike?
It’s recommended, but it’s possible that loaner bikes will be available. Must inquire and reserve in advance.

What about shipping my bike?
Shipping is no problem. Just use UPS and send to 17116 Bobs Gap Rd, Valyermo, CA 93563....attention: Mark Montgomery.

Yay, will switch from lurker to team member! I'm planning on arriving midday on Friday 10th (have some binding work commitments Thursday). Should we plan to leave Monday 13th, or Sunday evening? For those of us flying east, leaving on Sunday means heading to the airport around 2 PM, which sounds like it would cut into training and frivolity time!

Can someone remind me which airport we fly into and about how far of a drive it is from the airport? Would we be renting cars?

Thanks!

I fly in from the east coast too. I usually take the red-eye out on Sunday night, or I stay overnight Sunday near LAX and take the first flight out in the morning. Most everyone bugs out by early to mid-afternoon on Sunday, though, so leaving around 2pm on Sunday wouldn't cut into much.

The best airports are Ontario or Burbank (about an hour), LAX or Long Beach are also options, but are 90 minutes or more (maybe way more depending on traffic).

People try to carpool. That get's sorted out when we have a confirmed list of people.

Burbank or Ontario are closest. LAX also works.

I did some Google mapping and it does look to be about 6 1/2 hours driving from where I live. That's not bad, and it would save a ton not having to rent a car, ship a bike, pay airfare. So I am thinking I am in! So maybe a road trip from Phoenix if anyone else is in.....

Bump!

I'm getting pretty excited for some training in the sunshine... I'm coming down early to hang out with some LA peeps, but am planning on coming to camp on Wednesday. If someone is flying into Burbank/LAX and wants to share a car, let me know and we can coordinate. I'm flexible as to my departure time and would love to have some company.

Cathy, if we borrowed a bike last year, do you know if those same bikes are available for borrowing this year? I'm debating whether or not I want to bring mine with me. If I need to ask Monty about this, just let me know.

Looking forward to it!

Flight is booked!!! Coming in Wednesday afternoon and leaving on Sunday afternoon.

Michelle - I might have room in my car. I'm flying into LAX, but I think I drive right past Burbank, so I wouldn't mind dropping in to pick you up. I might be driving up with Andy too, so I have to see how big a car I can rent. I'm definitely bringing my bike. It was great not having to travel with it last year, but the bike I borrowed didn't fit me very well and I spent a couple of very uncomfortable days on it. Beggars can't be choosers, though. Even though it's a PITA, I'm bringing my own bike this year.

Hi Dawn,

That's awesome, I might take you up on that. I'm actually staying in South Pasadena, so that may or may not be en route from LAX, but I can probably figure out a way to get a ride to someplace more convenient to you if need be. I know what you mean about the bike thing, I had similar issues last year even though the bike I borrowed was much, much nicer than the one I own. :-)

I woke up to frakkin snow on the ground this morning.

Let me look into flights and see if I can get something cheap. Likely into LAX just because of price.

I won't need a bike as I'm not planning to do any cycle, just running in the sun and lounging a bit. Gotta bring up my vitamin D.

My other option is a trip to Tucson that same weekend so it will come down to $$. I'll do my research and let you know today.

Since I'm in the middle of a kitchen remodel, my though process is ticket to CA or sweet kitchen faucet... The kitchen won. I'll miss being there, but will put it on the list for next year!

With a smaller group, if you don't decide until later, that should be fine. Really, your only costs are the flight and the per day and like Dawn said, that includes more food than you can eat and more wine than you can drink!

Can you "work remotely". In other words, hop on email whenever possible, call into a meeting? I have an iPhone so when I am working I can do email when running errands. They never know the difference, and they don't care, since I mostly work at home.

When I mapquested 17116 Bobs Gap Rd, Valyermo, CA 93563, the response was the website couldn't locate that address.

Where exactly am I going on Wednesday and where may I find accurate driving instructions?

Ah, there's your problem....

From Dan's directions: Most important: Do not Mapquest! If you do, you're liable to take a very scenic route that will lead you high in the mountains, and to both seasonal and permanent road closures. Use the directions we provide in the link below.

Which airport? See below as it has directions from all.

http://www.slowtwitch.com/Bike_Fit/F.I.S.T._Workshops/Xantusia_46.html

The important part is when you get to 165th street (stoplight).

Up the hill 5 miles and once you are on the flat stretch, look for the green Xantusia sign on the left. Go down that dirt driveway. If you go down the hill and curve left, too far. Turn around.

You will think you're in the middle of no where. You almost are!

Thanks for the answer...except the link doesn't work!

I am driving back from visiting a friend in Scottsdale, AZ.

Somewhere Dan had written directions, but I could only find your post with the address, now I'll dig further to find his original message...

Off now to pick up my packet for IMCali - #1683 -and that damned cold water again!

That's weird.

Go to the main ST page and in the upper left, do a search for Xantusia and the second link it is.

F.I.S.T. Workshops, and various other tri and bike related camps, take place on "The Compound," also known as Xantusia.

There's a map there and everything.

Got some bad news from the doctor. My knee swelled up over a week ago for no reason whatsoever. Still hasn't gone away. Finally saw the doctor on Friday and he's a bit concerned. Did x-rays, ultrasound and blood work. Going back on Tuesday to see what's up. Right now, I'm on anti-inflammatories and rest.

I'm still coming to camp, but I will probably not be running or biking. Might be able to do some swimming. I'll see about that on Tuesday.

I found it and printed it out.

Very helpful as I am prone to getting lost inside a paper bag.

Highlight of yesterday's trip was finishing with the 75-79 AG World Champion from Kona.

I only hope to still be functioning, much competing in Ironman competition when I'm 77 years old.

Hi all -

I'm out too. Hubby officially has Influenza A and I've been exposed. I'm worried I'll get down there and get sick in addition to potentially spreading it to all of you. If that happened I would feel horrible! I don't know if I'll get it for sure or how long I could be a "carrier" so it isn't worth the risk. Plus, he is still really sick and I hate leaving him like this. He can't even get out of bed. I would be shirking my wife responsibilities to abandon him.

Darn it! I was really looking forward to spending time with all of you. I blame my hubby.

Have a great time and take lots of pictures!

Sorry you can't make it Jen. Keeping fingers crossed that you won't actually get sick.

Went to the doctor today. No damage in my knee. He doesn't want me running or biking until the swelling is gone. I can swim as long as I don't use my legs. I'm going to *consider* his advice, but I still might bring my bike. Not sure I can pass up the riding at Xantusia just because of a little swelling!!

Did my first ride since last October today. Silly me - I decided to follow Dan and Cathy. Stupid big climb in the middle of a 2+ hour ride. Glad I did it and it feels great now, but it kinda sucked in the middle of that climb.

Now we're chillin' and recuperating. Might do a hike later at the punchbowl.

If I had water that nice at home, I would never leave - permanently resign my life to growing gills.

The horses are pretty cool too. Haven't enjoyed them for decades and forgot how much I enjoy a hay-eating animal.

Last full day of camp today. I can't get adjusted to this time zone. Up at 5:20 today. Ugh!

Yesterday was pretty chilly. We're all hoping the sun comes out today. We did a trail run at Jackson Lake yesterday and then a short ride. Tried to get up to the jail, but my legs would only allow me to go halfway. Two of the ladies went the whole way and two of us turned back at the halfway point. I guess 2 days in a row of 5 mile climbing is not in the cards for me given the sad shape I'm in.

Today a bunch are heading over to Santa Clarita to swim since the local pools are closed on Saturday. Cathy and I are planning to ride.

A big thanks to Slowman and Monty and Toni and Punkin, Nelson, Charlee, Morgan, Babe, Sunny, Bubba/Bobby and Spike and the two horses for all the fun and hospitality last week. And to Dawn, Michelle, Audrey and Sally for the fun and training! And to Kylie and Grace for coming up for dinner Saturday night. And to Bjorn for just being Bjorn.

Dawn and I have been to all 4 years of the camp and every year it's been very, very fun each year. I'll have to say that with a smaller group, there is more training going on, but we did manage to have some fun Saturday night. Hope everyone had a good trip home and we were already talking about planning next year's camp.

Cathy, as always, you were awesome.

Dawn, you were the tri-mom of the group...with a wild side when full of too many margaritas!

Michelle, our matching, snarky bike jerseys says it all. Training would have been abysmal without you.

Aubrey, you were a class act to which I aspire if I ever have time to train. 2 IM championship slots in 2 years is impressive!

Kylie, stay and train a little next year.

Monty, last, but not least, many thanks for your generous hospitality.
