East Coast Ladies of Slowtwitch Training Weekend **UPDATED 3/5/08 **
Quote | Reply
In the roll call thread, TriKat asked if there was an east coast edition of the ladies training weekend. We haven't had one so far, but if there's interest with enough of us then we can set one up. I think the earliest we could set this up is some time this fall.

So, if you'd be interested, let me know the following:

Where are you located
How far would you be willing to travel
Suggestions for locations
Suggestions for timing

Thanks!

I'm definitely interested, and if need be, I'd be happy to help organize!

Location: DC
How far to travel: within driving distance, though I've been known to drive down to Augusta, GA for a rowing weekend ...
Suggestions for locations: Something fairly central and convenient -- depending on who's interested and where they're located, maybe central NC (e.g., Winston-Salem) or Charlottesville, or maybe Pennsylvania. Much farther north, and I get my states confused, so I'm no help up that way!
Timing: It'd be cool if we could time it around a racing weekend, maybe find a race that is hosting both a sprint and a 1/2. Setup is running a half, Oly, and a sprint at Patriots (9/6-7 in Williamsburg, VA). But I'd be up anything!

I hope we can get this off the ground. And then the Easties and the Westies can meet in the middle of the country for a Ladies of Slowtwitch convention!

I'm in Indiana. I'd go if the weekend met my schedule. I'd drive up to 8 hours.

I've done mtb training weekends with my girlfriends. We drive to a state park somewhere and camp and ride all day long. Its so much fun. And cheap (camping).

State parks are also great for road riding camps, you have the camping option, sometimes large cabins, and you are usually out in the country side where traffic on roads is low. Almost always trails to run on, and often a lake to swim in.

Actually, I posted this idea much earlier in the roll call thread....

How about somewhere in the Poconos? Not too far from NYC and Philly airports. Or somewhere up near Harriman State Park--also close to all the NYC airports and great for bike riding. August or mid Oct would work for me. September definitely wouldn't. Especially not the weekend of the 21st!

Vermont, Maine, or NH would be nice but hard for a lot of people to get to.

I'd also love to go anywhere in NC since I used to live there. Somewhere in the Southest would be good if we did it in Nov.

not to totally hijack this thread.....but I am pretty psyched for Pumpkinman! That being said, it is the same day as The Flattest Century and I am torn between the two. Which one would help me more towards IMFL? Tough decision....

I once attended a training weekend in NH, Gilford to be exact. We did a lot of training on the Timberman/Big Lake course. We stayed at B'Maes but the Gunstock Inn has a lap pool.

Does NH appeal to anyone?

it is the same weekend as Hyannis 2 - a very big sprint down here - as well as a women's tri in Hopkinton - if I don't do an olympic in august (or even if I do) I know I plan to do one of these....so I would not be able to come

Yes, Hyannis II is that same weekend as Pumpkinman, on Saturday while P'man is Sunday. We could have a roll call and see who's in for Hyannis and if not many are then that weekend could work. I usually do Hyannis since I live about 3 miles from the beach but I'm gonna go long that weekend instead. I have people that stay with me for Hyannis and I've told them we're heading out of town right after the race to head to Maine. I just might head up on Friday night and leave the house open, we'll see.

Ladies,
Pumpkinman is the perfect weekend....and here's why:
1. TRUKWEAZ is the color commentator for the HALF!! A few other ST men will be racing and three will even be sitting on the roundtable discussion.
2. There is a sprint on Saturday, pasta gala on Saturday night, and the big shabang on Sunday.
3. Awesome gorgeous places to stay for the weekend.
4. YOU CAN ALL HELP ME!!
5. Did I mention....I'm the RD...there aren't many solo women RD's out there....we need all the support we can get.
Seriously though....
great venue, beautiful time of year (Ocean is only 15 minutes from venue and is still plenty warm). Joan Benoit Samuelson will probably be back to race again (which for me was surreal).
Just my 2 cents.

Riding is gorgeous during Columbus Day weekend...and depending on the warmth of the fall (if this odd snow filled winter in any indication) the water in lakes and ponds could still be ok...mid to high 60s.
Southern Maine (where Pumpkinman is) is just 1 hour north of Boston. And, Skybus flys into Portsmouth NH from various locations. There is also a great Bus Service, C & J Trailways right at Logan into Portsmouth. In addition, Manchester (aka Manch Vegas), NH is only 45 minutes, I believe Southwest and many others fly into there.
Anyway, ladies, check out these areas.....York, Kittery, Kennebunkport and Ogunquit, Maine, and Portsmouth, NH....I really think we could have a blast weekend in this area (again I am biased)....we can ride inland to the apple orchards, prime time...and still head back to the beaches for some gorgeous runs!

How far would you be willing to travel a few hours in the car, ie, NY state, New England, Pennsylvania
Suggestions for locations upstate NY or New England sound nice but maybe PA or somewhere a little further south? would be more in the middle, better for southerly types?
Suggestions for timing early October would be great as no conflicts w/summer races, if not thought of so much as focused training weekend but more fun & training weekend

This is a great idea! I said that before in my "intro" first post. Now I mean the weekend. Before I meant the womens forum.

It's great to see so much interest here for an East Coast version of the ladies training weekend. The vast majority of people who have responded are from NYC/Boston/New England/New Jersey area. I know we can't find a way to make everyone happy, but I think we have to go with the numbers and find something that will work for the most people. So, who would be willing to commit to the following:

Date: October 9 to 13th
Location: New Paltz, New York (Hudson Valley area)
Cost: $60 - 70/night (just a rough guess at this point, but I don't think it would be more than this)

New Paltz is about 90 miles north of LaGuardia airpot and 70 miles south of Albany. I can find lots of possible vacation rentals in that area that will work for us. We'd need at least 8 to 10 people to commit before we can go ahead with this.

The added benefit of this timing and location is that it's also the weekend of American Zofingen.

Let me know if you'd be willing to commit to this now (ie. send a deposit). If you can't commit, then let me know that you're at least considering it.

This is SOOOO tempting! (Though I can't believe y'all want to go NORTH when it's cold! What's a native Georgian to do?!?)

I'm tentatively in (and will put in a deposit even if I end up not being able to make it -- may be a close-to-game-time decision) and would probably drive up from DC either the day before or very early (read:overnight) the morning of the 9th. If I end up going and if anyone wants to carpool, I'd be up for that. (I'd have room for one more bike on the roof-rack.) Or maybe Amtrak's an option ... though I'd likely have to change trains in NYC, and from experience, that's a disaster for me!

I think it will be harder for people to come in the summer because of race season. I really thought the fall would be better. I think most people responded that fall is better for them schedule-wise too. That time of year in the 'gunks is absolutely beautiful with the leaves starting to turn color. The riding and running will be fabulous.

True. Though trying to schedule around racing season is going to be tough no matter what, unless you do it really early or really late in the year. You still have lots of races well into November, including B2B, IMFL, and IMAZ.

I thought we were originally thinking September. Is that off the table now?

(Oh, and I checked the temps for late September/early October for New Platz -- not too bad, but definitely knee warmers and long sleeves!)

And please know that I'm giving you a hard time just for the sake of doing it! You're a doll for putting this together! If I can get there relatively easily and I'm not underwater at work, I'm there!

I would totally be in! Don't know any of you, but sounds great. Also FYI I have a place in the Catskills, about an hour and a half (or maybe a little less) away from New Paltz... If anyone wanted to stay there I have room for a couple of people, probably. Might be a bit far but might be do-able.

Still a bunch of races I think in August around here...

Sounds like a good idea. I'd love to join in on some rides or runs if I can arrange babysitting for my little ones (ages 4 & 5), and can help with recommending a good course. I live in Gardiner, 5 minutes from New Paltz.

Janice, you might be surprised how swimmable it is in October. I remember specifically, I had a visitor (online friend) from the midwest in October and we had a lovely wetsuit free swim in Oct in Northern NJ.

My husband and I swam our lake up til November without wetsuits. Then...within a couple of weeks we were skating on it.

Anyway, I am pretty sure that with wetsuits swimming is a can-do. And if I get around to ordering that "spare wetsuit" I mentioned in another thread, I'll have a loaner in case someone's traveling light. :-)

You swim sans wetsuit in Oct in NJ?!?! I'm jealous. Maybe I'm a wimp (quite likely, actually) but I swim at Walden Pond (Boston) and I can barely put my face in the water in late September. As the boys would say, HTFU....

I don't mean to hijack the thread and talk about water temp -- but yeah... it was cold but swimmable in October. I never really got into swimming in water that is so cold you *need a wetsuit. As you mentioned, one's face freezes regardles sof what's on the body.

IME, it matters what the circumstances are. Pumped up for a race, I can take the cold. Excited to have a friend to swim with in OW , who is in fact faster than me and gives me a challenge to keep up, I can take the cold. Flopping around doing laps on my own....not so much.

For a meeting with ST-ers I could take the cold. :-)

Which reminds me , has anyone thought of a code name for ST women, bitches on wheels or something more clever?

I did an ocean swim in Oct. a couple years ago in Delaware for a race. I was one of the few that decided not to wear a wetsuit, but it was such a short swim it seemed silly. I was cold but it was okay.

It depends on what body of water we swim in. A small pond or lake can get cold quickly if the weather is cold. We will probably be able to swim in wetsuits in Oct. We are tough east coasters after all.

Just thought I'd post another possible suggestion for the eastern US slowtwitchers. A week ago, I went to Chattanooga, TN for a training weekend. I've never been to Chattanooga. But I have to say it was a fantastic place to go for some fantastic bike riding. The city is small and very easy to get around. The pavement in TN and GA is like glass, hardly a pothole, since they don't have to put down a lot of salt and sand in the winter. The terrain goes from rolling to small mountains. The climbing is either short and steep, or long and gradual (mountain climbs 3-5 miles long, up to 1600 ft vertical). Lots of trails for mtb riding, and for running. The city has a nice waterfront section with lots of restaraunts (and ice cream).

So, just a thought for any of you easterners looking for a warmer place to get in some fantastic riding when you are socked in bad weather at home. We were there March 21-25, and had 60's and sunny, but also one day of windy cold in the 30's. But before and after, it was in the 70's, so we just hit it a few days off from more normal conditions.

I agree, it's hard to schedule around people's summer races. As a fellow Canuck, I'm committed to family stuff during the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend. However, a weekend in September would be very tempting if I could drive from Toronto.

Do we have dates (or even a set month) for this? My September is filling up quickly, but I'd much rather go to the training weekend than do a relay run or something!

Again, anything I can do to help, I'm happy to do!

Thx,
csb

The only weekend I'm able to do it is October 9 to 12. We had 7 or 8 people who said they could probably make that weekend. I have to be down in the New Paltz area that weekend for American Zofingen, so I thought I'd arrange the weekend around that race. I realize it's not perfect for everyone, but I doubt we'll find something that will work for everyone anyway. I'm going to look into a cabin that we can share and then I'll ask for deposits from everyone.

I hope this weekend works for you csb. I know you wanted something earlier, but I just can't do anything earlier than that weekend (unless we do it in Toronto, but that wouldn't work for lots of people).

October 9th is Yom Kippur - and since I don't fast well I know I will not be able to drive that day....and that week is Sukkot - another big jewish holiday.
should be interesting to be in New Paltz since that area has a large jewish population -
but I doubt I will be able to make it....I have my boys that weekend and we will be busy building the sukkah.....

If I am not still injured I am considering doing the short course of Zof. Where is everyone going to be staying?

Well, I was thinking of getting a cottage in the area that we could all share. If you have any ideas or if anyone has any leads on cottages in the area that would accommodate about 10 people, let me know.
