What does your wardrobe say about you?
I think I have been a little too influenced by the Title 9 catalogs that come to the house every few weeks, I looked in my wardrobe closet and saw:
  • 1 pair of dress slacks, 4 pair of casual pants, and 6 pairs of tights of various weights for training in every type of weather
  • 1 blazer, 2 jackets for running, 3 jackets for biking, 2 jackets for winter, and various fleece and rain combos for hiking and X country skiing
  • 2 regular bras, 6 sports bras, and one push up bra I haven't worn since my honeymoon
  • I do have some skirts that I have worn to work, but I don't wear them to parties or out on dates with my husband for some reason
I think I need to shop at a store that doesn't offer a selection of breathable fabrics. Anyone else lacking in the wardrobe department?

My wardrobe says "get off your ass and start training!" It also says "hmmm, you like black, Banana Republic and Ann Taylor Loft."

I'm down to one pair of pants that fits, the skirts are a little more forgiving thank god. Hopefully in a month or so my wardrobe will say, "give us a belt to hold these pants up!"

That I have 3 classification of outfits:
1. clothes I bought when I shopped for a hobby - before getting into tris and working out regularly
2. clothes that I workout in
3. LULULEMON...clothes that I like to live in :)

I'm a fashion cripple. I don't see the point in spending alot of $$$ on clothes that don't wick, isn't windproof, or fleecy. While I agree that it's good to have "the classics": little black dress, well-fitting dress pants, classic white blouse blahblahblah--those items can be found with well-timed visits to the sales rack.
Some "sporty" clothes from Kuhl and Watergirl/Patagonia can cross over to looking almost dressed up, but I don't think they fly so well in restaurants with chilled forks and sommeliers.

My wardrobe agrees with QRGirl's. Workout stuff drawers are over flowing. Ann Taylor for the office. Jammies for at home. Pretty soon it will say I spend a lot of money on team kits.

I like Banana Republic/Gap because in their niche of retailing, they seem to be the best at making some styles of pants that fit someone who has biker girl thighs.

Everyone else, it seems like if they fit in the legs, it's two sizes too big at the waist.

Jeans and sweaters for work. Yes, I can wear jeans to work! I have a couple of pairs of pants that aren't jeans. And it's cold enough all year to wear sweaters all year.

Lots of dresses, especially casual ones. Lots of skirts. I never wear hose and 99.9% of the time wear shoes without backs (sandals, slides, etc.)

Workout gear--tons of DeSoto gear. Like pretty much every piece ever made. ;-)

I also have 6-7 bags of clothes that no longer fit and need to move some of the current wardrobe into the "too big" pile. WOO!

I hear you on that! Stacey & Clinton would throw their hands up in horror at my fashion-laziness. With training, work, school, husband, etc. I just really don't put any effort into my clothing. At all. Like others here, I have a very well-rounded workout clothes wardrobe, like drawers and drawers full. Some very nice dressy clothes from my NYC days that live in my closet collecting dust. The jeans/fleeces I wear to work every day. The fleeces/sweatpants that I wear when not at work. It's really pathetic.

I really love this new forum!

Funny that you bring this up. I too, have the BR and AT Loft wardrobe for work, but outside of 8-5, I'm a sporty girl.
In fact, we were getting ready to go to dinner Saturday night and my husband said to me, "No offense, but do you have a shirt you can wear that DOESN'T have a swoosh on it?"

I remember when I was a kid they used to have some clothing line called "garanimals" (or something like it) where the tags on the shirt was some kind of animal and you would match it up to pants with the same tag. God, I need that kind of help again..... ;-)

Hahaha, same here.

I have -
Two dresses. One is a summer halter dress, the other's black and strapless
Two pairs of jeans.
One short red skirt.
One really plain long, blue skirt.
A whole bunch of t shirts, some from races
A couple wicking shirts
One pair of running tights, that I use as "dress tights" on occassion.
Three shirts from Banana Republic. These are probably the only clothing items I own that are not a sports company.

Seven pairs of running shorts, seven sportsbras, seven pairs of socks.
Four swimsuits (one racing suit, one two piece, two one-piece suits that are at "drag suit" status)
Two pairs of goggles
Two caps (accessories!!!)

If I need dress clothes, I borrow them from my roommate. I like college, you can show up to class in pretty much anything...

maybe she's born with it, maybe it's chlorine
If you're injured and need some sympathy, PM me and I'm very happy to write back.

Mine is screaming "STOP BUYING PURSES AND SHOES!!" I live in AZ, so I have a lot of sundresses.
I'm a doc so my work wardrobe has to be somewhat professional, but I'm probably the most casually dressed one around, no white coat, occasional jean trousers, and an incredibly comfy pair of Dickies scrubs that I wear on Fridays.
I went crazy when runningskirts.com had a 50% off sale, so I have a bunch of them. Lots of assorted tri gear. Living close to Trisports is very dangerous!!!

I'm getting a new bike the end of this month (a Guru!!!), so I've been reeling in the online shopping for a while.

It says I need casual clothes BADLY. My wardrobe consists mostly of:

1. Suits
2. Dresses and "going out" attire
3. Training / technical clothes

What I need are relaxed / weekend clothes. I mean, it's so bad that I don't even own a pair of jeans (anymore).

My wardrobe is saying "I need some weeding!" For years, I've been the recipient of hand-me-down clothes from my sister, whose job requires her to be extremely fashionable at all times, and a family friend, whose hobby was clothes shopping until she found a husband.

I have tons of clothes, ranging from size 10 to XXL (the huge ones are my maternity clothes). Some of them date back to the early 1990s. I need to get rid of at least half of them so I'll be able to put the clothes that fit into my closet, where I can find them in the morning.

I have the same problem. I can't match anything so I hired a personal shopper. It doesn't cost anything!! You tell them your sizes, hair color etc. I told them I wear jeans mostly b/c I wear a uniform to work. I told her I wanted all wash and wear casual stuff. I went in and tried on a lot of clothes that I wouldn't even look at on the rack. Also when I put something on she gave me suggestions of what else the item could go with and what shoes to wear with it. I bought a few pairs of pants, one skirt and some shirts that I can mix and match. Oh and also when something was too expensive I asked her to find me something cheaper that would work.

My wardrobe says "you are a hardworking, sexy professional ... well, not THAT kind of professional <g> though I am paid by the hour .... ahem"

1. lots of suits and 3 inch heels for work .... I'm 5'11", however, the extra inches let me tower over others and force them to look up to me - definitely part of the court room game.
2. jeans, chords and comfy, but fitted low cut shirts and sweaters. I spent a few years 100lbs overweight - the non-fitting days are over, if it doesn't accentuate the positive, it gets ditched.
3. tonnes of ski wear - fun cammo stuff in a variety of colours is my fav right now.
4. waaaaayy too many bike tops, etc. .... is two full drawers of workout wear too much ;-)

Glad to know from reading this thread I'm not alone !

Whoa, whoa, WHOA! You can wear jeans to work!?!?

I'm in J Crew and Brooks Brothers suits (and their no-iron blouses are fabulous! And with French cuffs, even better!). Heels that I'm sure are sculpting my feet into something hideous, but are glorious. Angels sing over some of my shoes! A long black wool overcoat. (I'm a sucker for coats and am currently stalking the trench coat I've been dreaming about since I was 15.)

I second the personal shopper. I enlisted the help of a fashion consultant when I needed a formal gown for a wedding. She had me try on styles and colors I would never have attempted by myself, and I found the perfect dress. A deep slate blue that looks like something Liz Taylor would have worn in Cleopatra. I now seek out formal events just so I can wear "The Dress."

My wardrobe problem is that level between business/dressy and casual. Smart Casual, I heard it called once. I tend to find one or two outfits and promptly wear them to death. I feel this is a major personal failing, and I am working diligently to correct it. ;-)

Now is a great time to shop, all of the winter stuff is on clearance with major markdowns.

Not that I'm participating as I have given of clothes, shoes, accessories for 2008! Yes, ladies it can be done. i took a shopping hiatus in 2005 and it was much easier than I thought it would be.

My one concession will be sports bras. I need some new ones as what I currently own are all funked out.

Yes, jeans today and sweater. Jeans yesterday and sweater. Probably jeans tomorrow. Monday and Tuesday I had on Old Navy brushed twill pants. I'll be happy when it warms up and I can wear sundresses or denim skirts.

ha, that was me a few years ago! i would come home and vacuum, cook, whatever, in a suit, because i was so used to wearing those types of clothes. back then Ralph Lauren and Ann Taylor suits; worked like a charm every time.

after transitioning out of years of suits, now i have lots of denim jeans and denim skirts; very thin (almost sheer) wool tops (hoss intropia is my favorite), so i can layer wads of Moa on top. i wear arm warmers, giant scarves, cashmere sweaters, lots of clogs and (what my husband refers to as) "cow sh*t boots". everything is layers, and generally giant sunglasses because my eyes hurt in the light (i'm the weirdo driving around at dusk with sunglasses on thinking, "wow it's so bright!")

my splurge this year was a pair of Pure Color dark green velvet jeans-style pants; every now and then i will splurge on Vivienne Westwood (if i can find her on sale).

Summer is lots of American Apparel. they make some of the best garments i've ever owned!!!

what's sad is that i have hordes of workout wear. for some reason this is the stuff i have a hard time giving away; it makes no sense. maybe i feel because of sweating in it, nobody would want it? lol.

overall though, i have got to STOP buying freaking handbags and shoes; it's a problem, i swear. someone shoot me.

so i guess my wardrobe says, "shoe slut", solves emotional problems by way of handbags, is apparently a fiber artist because even the expensive clothes have random fuzzies all over them. in fact, the other day i spotted my sweet husband in the kitchen with a clump of llama fiber stuck to his back pocket. it spreads!

Fleece pants and cool new winter running tops for work - yes, like ironclm, I really do get to wear that to work! My closet is full of clothes I love, but I don't often wear -Ann Taylor, White House/Black Market, etc...and tons of casual workout clothes that are so comfortable I end up wearing them all the time! I think Stacey and Clinton would have a field day with me, too! ;-)

My closets in my spare rooms say I used to live in cold places (which I still visit and why I still have the clothes) or places like Las Vegas (with a lot of really cute going out party clothes).

My closet in my bedroom says I buy 90% of my clothes at Costco...since moving to Hawaii I rarely shop anywhere else...how sad is that.

One closet in my bedroom says I like really shoes and purses...I just keep them in case I have an excuse to get dressed up and go out to the bars/clubs....something I really have no desire to do.

All of my closets say if I find something that fits I buy in multiple colors or styles. I really don't like to shop, so if I find something good, I stock up. Same with workout clothes.

Then there is the storage room, which says, I don't return things I buy with the intention of trying on and if they don't fit returning/I hate trying clothes on at the store. Way too much stuff still with tags on them...time to donate.

Hopefully I've got an even mix going on -- a dresser filled with the casual, jeans, etc.; one closet devoted to work type stuff, suits, slacks, jackets; and one closet devoted to workout gear that's bursting at the seams.

This thread, however, brought up a question:
-------------How many pair of cycling shorts do you own?

It's time to re invest in several pair but the price tag always takes my breath away -- I'm partial to PI Ultrasensor, $90 a piece.

Tnx!

I'm sad; I go to Target/Marshalls and go straight to workout clothes to look-THEN I go through the everyday stuff
since I'm a personal trainer I get to live in workout stuff :)
I do buy pretty things; LOV BR and Gap/ON
dress? hmmm, I'll have to dig to find that-got a skirt though, just have a hard time in heels
I do have pretty feminine sleepwear-husband likes that :)

Yes, DC is very different from CA, even up north where you live. NY is even better (or worse, depending).

My wardrobe says:
My tight achilles could possibly be caused by the 4" (or more) heels that I wear EVERY SINGLE WORK DAY (Does Marc Jacobs even make a lower heel?)
That I need more than the 6 closets I now have - they're full
That by essentially being the same size for nearly decade makes the size of the wardrobe nearly unmanageable
4 of the closets are 1/3 shoes
That I've recently trended toward designers but still have Ann Taylor suits from up to 8 years ago (and wear them)
That I have wardrobe schizo syndrome - half of goods fine for OC, CA and other half for east coast and international travel
Two drawers of workout clothes with two additional sections folded in the main closet. Team togs in closet drawer. Fleece folded on top.
In one drawer an expensive Max Azeria shirt lies of top of one from Target next to one from Chloe and one from GAP outlet

"Fashion Cripple" - I love it!
  • Almost all my work pants are from Mexx (they fit well, go in the washing machine and don't need ironing) and I have lots of work tops that don't need ironing (the few that do rarely get worn).
  • I own one pair of jeans and a couple of okay casual tops.
  • Everything else is related to swim, bike, run, pilates and/or the gym, along with some left over ultimate gear from my old frisbee days.
  • I have a massive number of shoes but only four of them are not designed for running/hiking/biking/field sports (I have size 10 AA feet so buying non-athletic shoes is a nightmare)

Basically I'm set for work and for working out but have very little in the way of casual clothes.

This is depressing! How does one find a personal shopper, specifically one in the Vancouver area??

One of the best wardrobe decisions I ever made was to decide on my colors. Other than workout gear and the occasional formal dress, I wear only black, white, grey, brown/khaki/taupe, light pink (think oxford cloth pink), light blue (oxford cloth blue), and navy. That means no red, no green, no yellow (no great loss!), no purple, no [insert other colors here]. It makes life very simple. If I'm struck blind tonight, I can get dressed tomorrow with a minimum of disaster! It also makes shopping easier: "I LOVE this [whatever], but it's not my color, so oh, well!"

I also go through a severe culling routine about once every 2 years. Clothes that have managed to creep into my life that don't meet my color requirements are given away. So are clothes that I don't wear that often or that don't fit me <<that well>> or that I just don't like anymore. I recently gave away a great navy pinstripe suit that always garnered me compliments ... but I felt like Miss Jane Hathaway when I wore it, so away it went!

Anyway. I need to stop thinking about simple clothes and start thinking about work!

Nooooo! Oh you can't quit. Who else would keep me company?

I've never ever been a handbag person (shoes are another story) but lately I seem to have developed quite an addiction for bags. WTF? Since yesterday, I have bought a white satchel and a (really cute) red croc purse from Coach. Let's not even get into the various "red" purchases that red purse has triggered.

I'm convinced I'm going through some kind of stress denial right now because I don't normally do impulse purchases like this.

Luckily the workout clothes are pretty feminine clothes but geez I go into shock when I have to actually get dressed for dinner! it's accessory utopia!

so, you're spot on, of course!

personally i love it and had already forecasted red and camel, so i've got the materials all ready to go. you will see giant swathy scarves (from me) next year...in red baby, fabulous red.

Oh, and did you see Prince's RED suit on the grammys? Prince, the suit, gorgeous.

Not to hijack this (particularly given the forum, subject, and the fact I'm a dude), but I'm curious to know about Lululemon and triathletes, since a few posters have mentioned it. Being Canadian, that stuff is everywhere, but what's their penetration like in the US? Where are you guys getting it?

I actually live across the street from one of their stores here in Toronto, and the place is always packed; I refer to it as the "License to Print Money Store". Chip Wilson is a very smart and very rich dude.

A few years back, they did attempt a brief (few items) foray into triathlon, but they pulled the stuff. I spoke to one of their designers (who, as it turns out, I knew in high school and we have many friends in common), and he recognized that the stuff wasn't well designed for tri. I personally thought the material was way too heavy amd thick.

I know tri gear is expensive, but I have a hard time getting around paying $110 for a pair of sweat pants. As well, I have some gender issues with the logo.

Bonus points to the person who can tell me what the logo represents, and why the name is Lululemon.

I think there are two stores in the Seattle area. I don't have any Lululemon stuff, I wanted to buy some when I was in Victoria a few years ago, but the crazy Canadian taxes jack up the price WAY too much.

I can't tell you about the logo for Lululemon. However, the brand name was picked because the owner once had a clothing line that was hurt by Japanese knock-offs. He chose a name that was hard to say with an accent from east Asia. Read this in an interview.

And my closet says:

Clothes junkie, buys everywhere (E-Bay, vintage, you name it), dresses up when required for the court room or the opera, otherwise wears fleece and jeans, and has tri clothes spilling out of half of a big bureau.

Also says - gave up wearing shirts. After starting tri's, shoulders busted out of old shirts and new ones are always too big in the waist if they fit in the shoulders. It's sweaters all the way, preferably sleeveless to wear under jackets.

And - says that it's impossible to find a bra anymore. Too much rib cage, not enough cup size. Thank God for lycra!

That may have been the answer in the media, but I have an answer (that's similar) from one of the original partners at Lulu (partners were bought out about before company took off.

Chip had some brands that were super-popular in Asia, and it seemed that the Japanese in particular were drawn to Western brands...the more American, the better. Since they have a tough time pronouncing the letter "L", they thought that the best name for a brand that would appeal on its Western credentials would be a word with as many "L"'s in it as possible...hence Lululemon.

And the logo is a representation of Fallopian Tubes.

I use it for indoor wall climbing and for hanging around. Comfy. But not tri friendly.

I am lucky, I can wear jeans to work - I could even wear lululemon to work and no one would bat an eye. I work in a commercial photography studio and a couple of the women there are SERIOUS fashionistas so over the years I've been influenced A LOT by them. My closet has gone from everything from Banana Republic or Gap in black or white, a couple of pairs of shoes, maybe one pair of boots and a black purse to mutlicoloured, NO black (except for that little black dress), multiple pairs of shoes and boots, some REALLY nice purses (dark for fall / winter & light for spring summer) and GOOD jeans (Joe's & Citizens are my faves) because they just fit better & last longer, no matter how much my shape changes (thank goodness for lycra!!!). I've also discovered ebay, which has helped me fill my closet with nice stuff and NOT break the bank.

I do have a drawer full of workout stuff as well as another shelf full in my closet. Insane. I can't tell you how many pairs of black running tights I own in multiple different weights. I *just* bought yet ANOTHER running / cycling jacket yesterday (a packable pearl izumi wind jacket because well, you just never know when you're going to need that extra layer) which brings my total 6. What the hell do I need 6 jackets for? *Sigh*.

My wardrobe says I like red. So does my car. And my bike!

I hate shopping. I have several outfits for work, but I'd rather spend my money on training/racing clothes. Or gear. Or race entry fees. My husband says this is why he loves me.

Hey KT, I turn 37 on March 3! It took me a few years to figure out how to dress "age appropriately"....well actually just appropriately is probably more like it but I think I've finally figured it out. The rule of thumb for me is to dress for my body type - since I"m over 35, I've made it a cardinal rule NOT to wear mini skirts even though I could probably get away with it (my legs haven't looked better since I've started doing IM's). I'm not terribly curvy so I try to wear tops that accentuate my waist to give the illusion of some curves. 3 years ago I bought a book by Trinny & Susanna (the original What Not to Wear ladies - they're British and TOTALLY hilarious) called "What You Wear Can Change Your Life" a corny title but the book is chock full of great advice in terms of mixing colours and trying to figure out what colours look best on you. They've just released another book about dressing for your body type - I was flipping through it at Chapters. It looks pretty good and probably well worth the $25.

Title 9, Athleta, Lucy, Sierra Trading Post and Gap jeans. Add in too many workout clothes for the drawer they are crammed into and more pairs of jammie bottoms than pants. I have one black skirt and one dress blouse. I work from home quite a bit but when I do go into the office I'm in high tech so I can wear nice jeans and a sweater/shirt. I get the nice t-shirts from Lucy and wear those as well.

BTW - I'm 39 on March 2nd and dressing my age ain't gonna happen. I look at least 5 years younger than I am so I'll hang onto miniskirts for another year or two.

Yes, Stacy and Clinton would be horrified.

I agree. I'm also 39, look younger. I teach high school English and most of my clothes come from Title 9--even my dress clothes! Prana is my favorite line. I wear almost nothing but mini skirts and shorts in the summer. My favorite are the Terry bike skirts. I also wear a lot of Horny Toad and Carve. If I have to really dress up I'll look at Banana Republic. My jeans are Lucky. I am casually expensive!

I'm 41, wear the same things most of the rest of you, Horny Toad are my favorite pants - they are just cut right for my body type. Title 9 and Athleta sell my favorite casual clothes, which are what I wear to work, supplemented by Banana Republic and Jcrew. No mini skirts, I feel like I'm too old for that now, even though I can probably get away with it. I work at a university, and I don't want to look like I'm trying to be a college student twenty years later. I generally wear 'work casual'. I only own one pair of jeans. I keep the clothes fitted, not baggy and loose (thanks to Stacey and Clinton for that one!). I have too many workout clothes, but I have a hard time resisting buying things from Teamestrogen. Good thing I have a job.

My fave jeans are from Old Navy. I have about 3 pair in different colors - regular denim, dark denim, black. I don't know, they just fit me right and look really good. I have two pair of jeans I wear to work, the cheapest I could find, because they will at some point get ruined. Same with shirts. I have super cheap or my sister's hand me downs. Guess that's what you get for working in a lab.

Off work, I am queen of the hoodies. I seem to attract them and love them to death. I am not sure how many I even have. I know one is from lulemon (sp), one is fila, one is A&F, one is Ruehl with fake fur inside (so cozy), and then I have an abundance of sweaters because I'm cold all winter. In the summer I love tank tops and jean shorts.
Keen and J-41 shoes rule as well. I'm not much for high fashion - love to look at it but when it comes down to it, I'm too practical.
WAY too much workout stuff. Overabundance of workout stuff. I have clothes for all weathers, bike and run.
I guess my wardrobe would scream "COMFORT!"
Although, my husband thinks I look pretty hot in those tank tops and jeans.

I love clothes, have too many-too much of everything. I am very athletic, but was told I don't always need to look like an athlete. So, I am trying to get more ideas and be a little more feminine. Stacy and Clint are great

I'm so glad to find other ladies who think/dress like me. My wardrobe consists of Jeans, short, race t-shirts, black suite for funerals and meetings. I am a pre-school owner/director so I wear scrubs to work each day. I HATE SHOPPING!!!At 44 years old, clothes either are made for my teenager or my mother-in-law. It takes up too much of my training time to go to a shopping mall, walk around for hours etc. My husband(tri-athlete also) and daughter finally got tired of seeing me in the above outfits. SOOOOOOOO

My daughter arranged for a personal shopper last weekend to help me buy clothes(Nordstrom's does it for free) so she wouldn't be embarrassed with her mom any more. The personal shopper picked out the clothes, brought them to me in the dressing room, told me how to combine them and all I did was try them on. I only bought a few pieces(dress, 2 slacks, 3 shirts) but it was a shopping experience I could tolerate. We started at 10 and we were finished by 12. I was able to get my afternoon workouts.

I am into The Gap/Banana Republic and when sale season comes, I hit Club Monaco. I'm still a lot preppy and dress like I was still in college but now I've decided to become a bit more...girly. I notice that I buy more clothes for my real life when I'm dating someone but when I'm not, I mostly buy work-out stuff.

This is great! I actually work for lululemon, so I can fill you all in.
The logo is actually a stylized "A". The company was originally called "Athletically Hip". The "A" stayed when we became lululemon athletica. Some do consider it a feminine figure.
lululemon actually came from a focus group. Chip had previously sold his snow brand, Homeless, to the Japanese who don't have the letter "L" in their alphabet. He considered it lucky and wanted as many L's in the name as possible. Hence, lululemon :)
haha fallopian tubes...

The funnier part for me is the shift in progress since I started training....from more fashion influenced to more pants and casual wear. My wardrobe likely says that I am schizophrenic! The same closet contains the old workout clothes, the newer technical clothes for swimming, biking, running, all my t-shirts collected over the years, suits - some too big some just right, shoes with heels so high I only wear them when I KNOW I will be sitting, running bras I think have now overtaken the regular bras and bras meant to be removed earlier than later....button down shirts that run the gamut from too old and too big Anne Klein (from when I was nursing my now 10 year old), PINK with french cuffs, theory as they fit well, skirts for dates, skirts for work, skirts for going dancing....

As to lululemon - discovered them in Toronto but did not buy anything until I found them right here in Boston.....my FAVORITE winter running jacket....

not a handbag girl but I do love shoes! and lingerie, and sports clothes, and the perfect little black dress....
