Yeah, no kidding. There is also a breast stroker that hasn't made it to the first buoy yet. Long day!

Although I must admit, I got killed by a lady doing the backstroke at my last race...

I know a guy who has done multiple IMs and he only does breast stroke and swims an ok time. He also never wears a wetsuit, including one year in Placid when the water was in the 60s. Nuts!

When I first started masters last year my 100m breast stroke was faster than my 100 free (I was a breast stroker in HS). It would just be a lot harder to pull off in tight quarters. You would make enemies really quickly!

Not mine. Races need (non-injury) casualties. Even half-IMs deserve respect, and it just ticks me off when people don't take it seriously. I like the idea of an aggressive "plucking" from the water!

Is it just me, or does Penticton look like one ugly-ass So Cal dry canyon?

You're no kidding, I was always trying to get my ex to pick up her swim since her strength was the run but she faced 2 cut off times before getting there (and got pretty close to missing on a number of occasions). Got to get to the run to be able to use it!

i guessed him 6min back of doe out of the water, so 4:12 back is a great swim for him. if he'd have been bale to hang onto that 51min pack... argh...

i'm guessing he carves 1min out of doe for every 15mi of riding until he catches him, which oughta be at about 60mi in. then i think he'll take 1min out of him every 10mi. i'll guess rapp into T2 with a 5min lead on the major contenders.

I'm rooting for Jonnyo but I thought Doe was a stronger rider esp with last year's scorching Roth bike.

What a scrum in the swim, with 2500 starters. Isn't this a convincing example of why IMNA has to go to a wave start system. It's taking the fun out of it. The drafting on the bike is going to be crazy. How about this: 6:45 Pro start 7:00 all athletes under 40, 7:10 all athletes over 40.

Agreed. Jordan's swim has gotten better and better, but he obviously had to do quite a bit solo, rather than in a nice pack like Jonnyo and his cohorts. That had to take a bit of extra oomph to be alone for a while.

It'll be interesting to see how he runs after this ride. Barring any mechanicals, I'm also thinking he'll have some sort of lead off the bike, but how much, and will it be enough to hold off the runners?

Was that a bad swim for Gordo?? I'm sure he'da preferred to be in the lead pack, or at least closer to it.
At least he appears to have had a group to swim with.

If Jonnyo can have a solid ride, and then a PB run, I think he's got a real shot at this!!!!

GOOOO RAPPSTAR!!!!!!!!!!!! GOOOOO JONNYO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bike - 18 Km - McLean Creek Road
RACETIME: 01:46
MEN:
KIERAN DOE (#6) is in the lead, followed by:
* WOLFGANG GUEMBEL (#14) at 4:13
* MARKUS RESSLER (#32) at 4:45
* TORSTEN ABEL (#27) at 4:45
* JONATHAN CARON (#5) at 4:45
* JAMIE CLEVELAND (#2) at 4:56
* JORDAN RAPP (#62) at 8:15

Rappstar needs to catch up w/ Jonnyo and group, which given his bike power, aughta happen sooner rather than later.

He and Jonnyo are kickin' it so far!

Jonnyo has gone 3:04 (or thereabouts) I believe, so that'd take a 2:44 from Gordo to catch him

Dan got a quote on the text updates, which are currently rehashs of the course records:

Men’s: Chris Lieto 4:25:26- 2005
Women’s: JulieAnne White 4:59:01 1992
JulieAnne White won this race on two Occasions, 1990 and 1992. What is interesting, she was always considered a runner when she established this bike course record. White’s record has been untouched for 15 years. We will never forget that pink QR, "Zero Gravity" when she set the record, complete with pink Hed wheels. She rode it a month later to a pretty fast bike split, perhaps around 5:02, in Kona. It was a round-tubed steel bike. Dan Empfield recalls “A lot of course records were set on that model of bike, including Julieanne's bike course record on the old Auckland course at IMNZ a few months later, breaking Erin's record, as well as Jurgen Zack's Zofingen bike course record.”

Did you catch the woman trying to run out of the water with her wetsuit completely off except for one leg? Had the rest bundled up in her arms and kept having to gather it in while trying to run. Every time that leg stepped forward it would yank it out of her arms again. I think if I went to the trouble to get it down to one leg left in the suit while still in the water I'd just go ahead and finish removing it. Of course, she's there and I'm not so I'm not really qualified to say much. I just don't understand making it more difficult for no good reason.

if you are people like gordo (and others) using the "patience" strategy and save it for the run and you are now in a position where its getting difficult to think this strategy will result in the win, when do you to say to yourself on the bike its time to push harder than you'd prefer if you want to have any chance of winning? most of us are racing ourselves - not others, but if you are a pro going for the win you have to think adjustments in strategy are required based on how others are doing on the day.....i.e. someone being 20 mins ahead of you half way through the bike. Peter Reid commented on this about why he did not get closer to Stadler in 2004....did not adjust his strategy based on what others were doing on the day. Or maybe they can't go faster on the bike regardless....possibility I guess.

I am not sure that is possible. You race what you train. If you didn't have it in you in the first place to go faster on the bike then how does having someone farther in front of you suddenly make you able to go faster on the bike and still turn the same run time.

I could see if you are a minute or two behind where you thought you would be but that is alot more.

Gordo is a smart experienced racer and experienced on hauling ass on this course. I don't think he'll give up double digits to anyone except Doe and Rappstar on the bike. Rappstar will need to run sub 3:10 and Jonnyo will need to run sub 3 cause I bet Gordo comes flying through in around 2:50 :-). Either way, I am cheering for all three of these dudes, and I just hope they all have solid races. Personally, I like the Rappstar style of racing (ST approved fast to T2), but he's also proven himself over the 101 distance...this should be good. Also keep in mind that Rappstar raced a very studly ITU race in Kelowna last weekend and was looking pretty darn sharp, chasing the lead pack solo and giving no time away to the lead pack and still running 35 minutes after that hard effort.

i have mixed feelings on this one. can anyone tell me with a straight face that there are people who DID the work, but are naturally shitty enough swimmers that they can't finish inside 2:20? Should I feel bad for someone who took a spot and didn't bother to do the work, hoping they could "grit it out" on race day?

That is a new brand of stupid, if that's what they think...

Hang on...there are a ton of people like this...who just plan to fake it through the swim with a wetsuit. I'm helping a few folks for Ironman LP next year, and I had to give them a pep talk NOW about getting serious about swimming. While none of these guys are in fear of the cutoff, what they don't realize that if they do not take the swim seriously, they can easily add 10 min to the bike and 60 min to the run due to accumulated fatigue/dehydration from the swim course.

Yes, have to agree that at the end of the day your best time will likely come from staying with your own race plan/effort level.

I guess my thought was more to the effect that if you can see your plan will not result in the win (which I believe is Gordo's goal) based on how the race is unfolding on the bike, is it worth taking the risk to go above your desired effort level on the bike and hope for the possiblity your runs legs will still be there and you "might" have a better overall time (realize its unlikely that would be the case).

apparently you're right. but i won't concede anything yet. jordan is not IM trained, and he knows it, so his intent was to plod along for 70mi and then make an affirmative move if things were going well. sort of a bjorn bike ride, except tactically backwards: get your time at the end instead of in the first half.

still, if he's riding scared that timidity is often what leads to rookie success in an IM.

Serious hats off to Jonnyo on a stellar ride....look at that, he even held off Rappstar and has almost 8 minutes on Gordo...based on historical run times, Gordo and Jonnyo should converge around Main Street on the way home :-) :

MEN:
KIERAN DOE (#6) currently leads the men's field. Behind him:
* JONATHAN CARON (#5) at 13:22
* JORDAN RAPP (#62) at 15:31
* WOLFGANG GUEMBEL (#14) at 19:10
* TORSTEN ABEL (#27) at 21:05
* GORDO BYRN (#1) at 21:17
* KYLE MARCOTTE (#13) at 22:14
* MARKUS RESSLER (#32) at 22:16
* CHRIS BROWN (#36) at 22:16
* ANDRIY YASTREBOV (#3) at 22:56

....but with that massive lead can anyone catch Keiren Doe who posted these times at Roth 2006:

3 21 DOE, Kieran (NZE) M25 00:46:38 (5) 04:21:39 (1) 02:59:51 (17) 08:11:07

Unless Kieran Doe implodes, Jonnyo might run outta real estate while trying to reel him in.
Regardless, even if he finishes 2nd, that'd be HUGE!!!!

And of course, I'm sure he also just really wants to BEAT GORDO!!!!! ;-)

Awesome how, when there's an update, the ironmanlive site doesn't even load. IMlive should take a lesson from atptennis. Your site doesn't have to freeze when there's an update.

By the way, you may have heard Fleck on the Ironmanlive coverage refer to the IMC run course record by a guy named Colin Dignum....here it is from 1997:

15 Colin G Dignum West Vancouv CAN 25 09:15:52 Pro Men 13/36 30 248 1:00:49 1:37 29 229 5:36:17 20.0 1 1 2:38:47 6:04

Colin was one of the best Cross Country runners at the OUAA's and CIAU's (that's Canuck College sports for our NCAA friends). Colin's dad was an Elec Engineering professor of mine back at RMC in the 80's when Colin was tearing it up at Queen's University in Kingston :-). At the same time, Mark Bates was swimming and running cross country for Queen's :-)

he entered the race two days before, at the urging of his training buddies. under those circumstances a pretty good debut. i saw, i think, that there are 10 pro slots for kona in this race, is that right? maybe that makes this the first long day in jordan's kona buildup ;-)

Up until this point, the coverage has been pretty great (if not the most polished). Props to Fleck, Paula, Paul, Lovato and Reid... interesting stuff, especially compared to the usual IM coverage. Lovato is particularly fun to watch, talking about peeing and challenging an NHL player to shave his legs and dancing along with the background music. On national (I assume - in Canada) TV!

You know in all this Jonnyo glory, we have to give Paulo some serious kudos. Before Jonnyo went to Paulo he was strong but his race results were inconsistent and sporadic. Since joining Paulo, he hits PB's in every race...from 9:02 and 4:02 in 2 weekends last fall in Kona and Soma to sub 9 at Ironman Arizona, Canadian National Long Course tri champ and multiple half Ironman victories this summer and now IMC.

Paulo, congrats!

....and Rappstar, just jumping into an Ironman on 48 hours notice...that is just crazy cool! Gotta like it when you have enough fitness to just jump into a triathlon on Friday nite....Olympic tri...yes....but Ironman? That takes some serious fitness!

Couldn't agree more with you about Paulo. T-Racer has seen the same sort of improvements this year (PBs of 4:35 and 4:32 for the 1/2 IM) since she began training with Paulo. For as much of an ass as he can be on this forum, he really is a great coach and an all-around good guy, once you get to know him.

I totally agree with you all about Paulo! I was thinking about how consistant jonnyo has been since he started with Paulo!

Hopefully now Paulo can pull some of his own magic on himself for his race in october:-)

Congrats to The Jonnyo and all his staff (paulo + the orange shirt). I am very happy that good guys finish well you feel like they really enjoy what they do even with all the pressure. Rappstar had a great race too at that distance.

Anyways, just wanted to congratulate them for a well executed race. The RR will be a blast!!!

peace

yeah yeah but Dave wasn't any better than paulo is right now and paulo made him a 1:03 IM swimmer in like 6 months... couldn't he do that to himself? I mean all the "band" work? I would pay some cash to see him do that! Now he is also doing a smackdown with Dave at SOMA. But back to IM Canada thread:-) (i dont mean to highjack)

T-racer should make a celebrity appearance back in Ottawa for the Canadian Half Iron distance. She can take that 4:32 down to 4:22 on our bullet fast course. Funny you mentioned exactly my experience with Paulo. I had a very pleasurable time in the time we got to hang with each other in Kona, which was far from what I expected based on our interactions on this forum :-).

I know it will be killing me in October watching Jonnyo and Rappstar on Ironmanlive in Kona knowing I passed up a rolldown slot at Ironman LP. It would have also been an opportunity to hang out with Paulo so that he can tell me in person how messed up I am :-).

I think she would love to come back to Ottawa to race in front of her family and friends. And after watching today's race, I think she may have the Penticton bug, too. Like the great jonnyo, she is only focused on one race right now and not thinking about any races beyond October 13th.

Did that guy just start to seizure after he finished? They cut away pretty quick after he went down....It was right about 9:48 on the clock if that time is even right.

That's awesome. Hallie never showed up yesterday so I didn't get the chance to meet her - but Monica was a little worried about her 6 week taper... Looks like it worked out pretty well!

Thanks Khai.
It was cool to see Jonnyo kicking ass out there. I ran past him when he had about 3 miles to go. It was pretty obvious he was going to take 2nd as he was pretty far behind Doe and the next guy was fairly far behind him.
Lots of wind on the backside of the bike today. Started right after Richter Pass and didn't let up all the way back to T2. Around Keremeos and up to Yellow Lake were particularly gusty with a few rain showers. I personally found my limits today. I had predicted I would go 13 hours, and well, as you pointed out, I went a bit better than that, and even had time to do a pop-and-lock and a moonwalk through the finish chute. Headed back for the midnight finishers soon! I'm pretty shredded!

Thanks everyone for the comments and feedback. This was all put together very quickly and on-the-fly on race day, and much of the credit needs to go to the great Paula Newby-Fraser and NA Spprts Media Coordinator Helen Manning they were the two people who really pulled this together. Huddle, Lovato and I just stood around and ad libbed about triathlon - something we each to a lot of each day. Thanks also to Peter Reid and Jasper Blake, two good friends and great athletes who helped out a great deal and really made the show interesting.

We just need chip in to get Fleck a decent haircut, kinda got a Dracula look going on.

Typical tough crowd here on ST. Now the hair has to be perfect to!

At 46 I am just happy to have hair to cut ;)

You did a great job on the commentary... probably one of the best I've seen on IMlive. It was nice that both you and Lovato went beyond the really basic stuff (ie 'it's mile 20 and they're really going to start hurting now') to bring us more insightful observations of the race. I still wish I coulda been there to see if with my own eyes, though!

Will you be back in Austin anytime soon?

Less really IS More!!!!! hee hee. Nah. Not training for 6 weeks may not have been the best IM strategy, but without it I'm not sure I'd have made it here at all. But today I'm a hurtin' unit.

Great to meet you Khai. It was good to meet everybody else too! And thanks to AndyPants for cheering me on all day! That was a huge boost!!!
