Not the trunk, but along the lines

Until recently we had a 2014 Mazda 3 hatch - traded it in a couple of months for a (2018) VW Golf R hatch. Both cars fit my bike inside without taking the wheels off. Might be also relevant to mention that I’m riding Small sized bike frames.

The Mazda has more space in the back and I took the TT bike to the VW dealership in order to check the Golf - hubby was very pleased it fitted!

Tesla model S fits my road and Tri bike with the seats folded down. Technically, it’s a hatchback so pretty decent setup for road tripping to races.

My Ford Taurus SHO takes my tt bike in one bite with the rear seats folded down. And it's a fun ride there.

This is a topic where every Honda Element owner comes out the winner. I bought an Element in 2009 for exactly that reason and that reason only - be able to put my bike in the car, standing upright without having to take the wheels out.

Second the Mazda 3 Hatch. Mines a 2013 and my medium Shiv fits without issues. It's also fun to drive!

Dodge Grand Caravan. Its not even close. I can easily get 3 people with bikes and gear inside, and probably 4 if I actually try to maximize space efficiency. It removing wheels is an option, then I might be able to get 5 inside the vehicle, though I haven’t tried it.

Glad I got one a year or so ago, easily takes a couple of bikes (wheels on) and any kit. Just works.

CRV. Both my size medium Propel and the larger Crockett fit.

Wheels off you can fold the seats on one side and tie the frames down and have a passenger on one side in the back.

I do miss our A6 Avant though. Lovely car but way too many “fancy car” issues. We had a 2006 or 2008. Can’t remember.

Framed Minnesota fat bike - this is a toight squeeze.

I have an outback too and my bike fits nicely with one of the split seats folded down. I can still comfortably fit 3 people.

'Assuming you can afford it, you should get the Tesla. Buy the future today. Gettng anything else would be like buying an aero road bike with a 10-speed group and rim brakes.

I have an f-150 supercrew and it fits in the back seat no problemo. Just raise the bench seats up.

2015 CX-5 - fits 2 TT bikes, 2 suitcases, and a bunch of other wife shit that she needed for a week of vacation with IM chat in the middle. Wheels on all the time.

Hey of course this thread will elicit the tree hugger point of view that says it is easier to remove a front skewer and front wheel than slap seats down in a car...and of course there are roof racks, but I know a lot of you don't like those. I saw this as the guy who unsuccessfully tried to convince his family to get a VW eGolf even through there are still $14,000 of rebates on that Vehicle from the Ontario Govt until Mid Sep....my wife went for the Subaru Imprezza, so like Murphy's Law, I am stuck with my Jetta (not sport wagon but almost the same amount of room where I can just get my tiny 51cm road bike in with both wheels on). But I generally use my roof rack for the odd occaision when I have to take my bike places. I cannot put my 51cm tri bike in without removing wheels. Its just the way things work out with the aero extensions. But I just prefer the roof rack anyway. If I had no roof rack, skewer would come off. I will have to wait a few more years for the eGolf assuming VW does not discontinue that model.

The only downside of the eGolf is that it gets me from home to 50 km short of Lake Placid. This means that the next time I head over to ride with Murphy's Law, my eGolf would run out of range at around Tupper Lake and I would have to ride an extra 50 km before I meet him to only get hammered going up and down Whiteface....but hey, that's a good excuse for more riding miles LOL! It does get me from home to Mont Tremblant on one charge

See my note about the eGolf. Which Tesla model are we talking about. For me small is not an issue it's just which e-vehicle I get next.

Just a suggestion from my own use-case traveling all over the place in a Honda accord. Both wheels had to come off but the whole bike stayed in the trunk, out of site from thieves and I never really had to worry about smash and grabs as a result. It was truly convenient.

2015 Subaru Outback - YES

Haven't tried a mountain bike, but my 59 road bike and Large BMC Time Machine (both with a bit of seatpost sticking out) fit fine with both wheels on with the back seats down. Bonus points for levers next to the hatch that fold those seats down.

My tri and road bikes fit well in my 2017 VW Golf Alltrack. The other cars I considered in which the bikes fit well were the Audi A5 Sportback and Audi A4 Allroad. I really liked the A5 Sportback but the deal on the Alltrack was too good to pass up.

2016 Audi S6 here, my BMC TM01 fits just fine with the rear seats folded down

Holy cow, thanks for bringing up the A5 Sportback. That was not on my radar. Sweet car!

Toyota Prius V. fits 2 bikes + 2 suitcases with the rear seats folded down.

Definitely take it for a test drive and bring your bike along to see if it fits. My Felt B2 (size 54) fit well with the rear seats down and all wheels on the bike.

I haven't seen a bike in the 3 yet, but that was a design consideration. You can sleep in the back of the S and 3 (look up Tesla car camping. You fold down the seats, set the climate control and watch the stars through the glass roof,as you doze off).

The Supercharger network is pretty much built out in the lower 48, so I can't think of where you couldn't go. I just drove across country last week. Lots of Tesla's out in the middle of nowhere Kansas.

I'm sad that Honda stopped making these, but I'll try to find a newer used one when mine finally craps out.

58cm Cervelo P2 with all wheels plus BTS bottle holder with two bottles. Was pretty nice yesterday after a triathlon when it was pouring rain and it took me no time at all to chuck my stuff in and go.

Any year Ford Excursion. It is kind of a big truck. Not exactly a replacement for Audi. But I can fit a couple bikes in there without taking off the front wheels.

2018 Subura Crosstrek... YES it fits.. folding down the rear seats

Honda CR-V - yes for the bike with wheels or a Scicon hardshell. I'm pretty sure any midsize SUV like Toyota Rav4, Subaru Forrester or Nissan Rogue will have no issues.

Small Size SUVs like VW Tiguan or Kia Sportage - will probably work as well, but I had issues trying to fit a Scicon shell in a Tiguan. It barely fit.

Forgot I wasn't on Reddit and tried to upvote this. We rented a Caravan for our last out of town race, and it was great. 2 bikes in the back, bungee'd to the sides, and plenty of room for everything else.

I have a Kia Soul, and it works fine for 1 bike, two require stacking, which I'm hesitant to do, so for 2-3 bikes I use a rack.

I have a 2014 cx 5. It’ll fit one of my 60 cm road bikes no problem. My Scalpel doesn’t fit though. too damn big. I have a hitch rack for that.
I think it’s a perfect vehicle. It’s a beast in the snow as I found out last year in Philly. And it gets great gas mileage. It also has room for my 9’ one piece surf fishing outfit.

Or an El Camino, with a cloth cover in the back?

My bike is a 650 and I had to take off the front wheel and remove the seat post.

I have a CRV, and while my bikes can fit without taking the front wheel off, I actually prefer to do so. I find taking my front wheel off to be less of a chore than trying to gently lay the bike down on it's side and using up all your cargo space. I have a fork mount drilled into a 2x6 piece of wood to secure the bike upright and takes up minimal space. I just fold down the 40 side of the back seats.

Of course if I had an Element, you could do so with the bike standing up no problem. I wish they still made those.

Can confirm this. Used my A7 to drive to Du Nats in SC in April from CT. Plenty of space for bike, wheels, and luggage for a couple of weeks trip. And easy to drive for that distance.

Get a used one coming off lease and take advantage of the massive depreciation these cars have during the first two or three years.

I have a Raptor and can push my back into the backseat area from the side with folded seats up. Secured with a strap to the headrest - bumm.. like a 30sec operation. I bought a fork hook and initally planned to put the back in the bay but never done this yet.
Especially the ecoboost engines are a blast...

Hmmm, thats tough. My TT bike fits easily, road bike is little tougher. Both have to be angled on the way in. Would suggest you physically give it whirl. Showroom staff should be cool with it if you have one close by.

I know it has been said before, and you have to buy it used, but we loooovee our Honda Elements...can stand 2 bikes in the back, wheels on, and still have plenty of room for gear.

We’ve got a Mazda 3 Hatchback. Told the salesperson my only criteria for the car was the bike MUST fit in the back (hubby had other criteria ..) It actually fits 2 bikes, and all my tri stuff when we are driving to a race.

I had a Scion IM, now branded a Toyota Corolla hatchback, which I could get all of my bikes in without taking any wheels off.
Caveat: my largest bike is 51cm.

We now have a Rav4 and a 4Runner, both of which will take at least two bikes inside stood up with the front wheels off. We use a Saris Triple Track rack, but you can achieve the same thing with a 2x4 and some fork clamps.

not certain about new Prius' but my older Prius with the seats down holds a 56cm fine without removing the wheels, also it has a slight bit more room than a VW Jetta wagon for flat space with seats down.

This thread would be more useful if it grouped cars into 3 classes:

1) Those in which you can secure the bike inside, standing up, with both wheels on. E.g., Honda Element, Ford F-150 supercrew, most vans, etc. If you can't roll it in and drive off, it doesn't make this group!

2) Those in which you can secure the bike inside with the front wheel off, but the bike seat straight UP and fork set in a fork lock (e.g., a Honda Fit believe it or not).

3) Those in which you can secure the bike inside with the front wheel off and the bike laying down. This is the least desirable option and describes many of the vehicles on this thread.

I have a 2010 Honda Element with 110,000 miles on it and am wondering what I'm going to do when it is no longer highway trustworthy. I've looked at the Ford F-150 and but it's too much vehicle for my everyday use and I don't want a VAN. I may have to look at Group 2 vehicles for the next car.

I'd like to add category 5:
- Bike laying down with both wheels on AND the option to take the wheels off and stash frame and wheels in the trunk, seats up, bike effectively hidden. At the Oakland Triathlon last Sunday I was once again pleased with my Audi A6 b/c I could do this with my BMC TM01. So the car was a "category 4" on the way over and a "category 5" on the way home.
I am not sure the Audi Sportback can do #5 though can certainly do #4 I think.

The 4 door wrangler, depending on the size of the frame it can be a category 2, for sure a category 4, and if you take the top off it turns into a category 1.

Not sure what Honda Fit you're driving, but mine would not be Category 2 unless you remove the *rear* wheel. The distance from the bottom of the wheel to the top of the seat is too great. Definitely Category 4--everything on, bike laying down.

A Jeep Wrangler is a fantastic looking vehicle, but year after year Consumer Reports ranks it among the bottom feeders in terms of reliability. For its class, it's about the worst used car you can buy as well.

Can't help but notice as I peruse those images that almost all of the seats are slammed down. I'm guessing the few that aren't are smaller frames. Love the guy fitting his tandem in there! lol

As a little test I measured from the bottom of the rear tire to the top of the seat on my bike -- about 44 inches. Then I measured from the top of the folded down seat to the bottom of the headliner--about 39.5 inches. So, some people may have better luck than me at fitting the bike in as you have prescribed. I am upper-10% in height for American male and I do understand that I'm probably an outlier here.

At any rate, you CAN fit the whole bike in without taking anything off, if you don't mind laying it down. Still tons of room elsewhere (even room for a passenger!) with it like that.

Anyone have a BMW 4 series Gran Coupe? Sort of similar to the Audi A5 Sportback - 4 door hatchback.

I recently got a 3 series which I think has similar if not identical interior dimensions to the 4 series. I have to take the front AND rear wheels off to get my bike in the trunk. The issue for me is the wheel wells encroach quite a bit on the trunk width and I'm 6'4" and trying to stuff a 61cm frame with a pretty high seat in there. The narrowest part of the trunk is just a bit too narrow although I am only about a centimeter width wise from being able to get the bike in there with just the front wheel off. I can't say for sure, but I don't think the trunk space with the seats down would be long enough for both wheels on even if I did not have my tall seat post issue.

The silver lining is that after decades of cycling and fumbling around with the rear wheel, I finally buckled down and mastered the rear wheel removal/install game and I'm now Tour mechanic quick ;-)

I think you could do that with the Audi A5 Sportback. There is a cover over the cargo area that would hide the bike (with wheels off). It's worth exploring.

I test drove one and tried fitting my tri bike (Felt B2 - size 54) in the back with both wheels on. Wouldn't fit - cargo area too narrow. Same result with the Kia Stinger. I did have a BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo as a service loaner earlier this year and my tri bike fit in the back of it.

FWIW my Speedconcept fits in the back of my current gen Subaru Forester XT with the seats folded down with the front wheel on.

Yeah, I have that vehicle ... for the purposes of hauling a bike it is a decidedly inferior Category 3 vehicle.

The do suffer very little depreciation though. It is frankly bizarre how well they hold their value.

Yep...one of life's mysteries. I would by a Jeep Wrangler 4 door hardtop if they weren't such poor performers. People buy Range Rovers too, despite their high cost and their consistently poor ratings.

If you don't mind being perceived as de-balled, mini van is the only answer. I am quite happy with my Honda Odyssey: fold down the 3rd row seats, wheel in 4 bikes upright with no problems. Nothing to take off or hoisting sideways or arranging like a jigsaw puzzle. But it's a mini van, so do it as your own peril.

Ken W, thanks for continuing to drill down on the A5 Sportback! They made these in Europe for years but are only now coming to the states - so finding a used one is virtually impossible. But I gotta say this car hits all the right check boxes. If what you say is true, golden!

When I was looking for a new car early this year I wanted a car or wagon (no SUVs, trucks or minivans) that I could put my tri bike in with both wheels on, which really limits the universe of available vehicles here in the U.S. I researched and test drove a lot of vehicles and, if I was going to limit myself to one vehicle, the A5 Sportback would have been it. However, at the time I had two cars (BMW 3-series sedan and BMW Z4 roadster) and decided to go cheap on the tri transport vehicle (VW Golf Alltrack) and apply the $30k in savings to a CPO Porsche Cayman to replace the aging Z4. So far it's working out but every time I see an A5 Sportback I regret that I didn't buy one. Will likely get a CPO A5 Sportback in a few years when they start to come off lease. Best of luck in your search.

My wife loves the Countryman. Question - is it possible to take the wheels off and stuff the frame and wheels in to the "hatch" area without having to fold the seats? If so, that would be killer. (In other words, so people couldn't see the bike in the hatch).

That’s a great question.I have never done it-it looks like the hatch would be too small to fit everything and then put the attachment cover thing on so no one could see the bike...I may try it this week as I’m in the position of now taking a trainer class and then going straight to work with bike in car.Not sure I want it visible for that long!

2006 Volvo V70... bike laying down, both wheels on. Can load a couple of gear bags around it, but if it's a long-weekend road trip, pulling the front wheel gives me more flexibility for a couple more bags (soft-sided, haven't tested how stable a roller bag would be on edge.)

By next spring I'll be over 200K on that ride and looking for a replacement... wondering if the V60 will have the right cargo footprint, or if I'll be in CVT hell with a Subaru Outback. Doing my damnedest to keep the roof height low, i.e. no SUV/minivan BS. Anyone else in this class of vehicle?

Get a Lincoln MKZ, I can fit my entire bike in my trunk, with the backseat down, without taking off the front wheel. Plus, fit an extra wheelset, pump, tools, helmet and bag with plenty of room to spare.

Ok-update for you Twain..my bike (with both wheels off) will barely fit into the "trunk",but the cover then won't fit,so is visible.For me I will stick with whole bike in back with back seats down (however,then you can only have one passenger!)
Anyway-still a great car,I've had a CRV and the Audi A6 before and I'm happy with my little Countryman,also the dealership here has excellent service.

I've got a 2006 Element with 150,000 miles on it. It was my primary car but now my teenagers drive it. I do have an alert set on cars.com for a clean, low mileage 2011. I almost snagged one with barely 40k a few months ago.

So basically, it's the Sportback for less money and more space though maybe not quite as luxurious inside. Performance-wise, I bet they are fairly similar.

Interestingly, back in 2002, VW had the V-8 version of the Passat called the W8. It was the poor man's version of an Audi A6 4.2; slightly detuned engine but essentially in the A4 body with a stretched wheelbase, also available as a wagon.
The Arteon seems to be following suit - shorter chassis though stretched.

Do you think you can fit a mountain bike in one? I'm in the market for a new car and I was considering a GTI.

Closing the loop on this -

From all of this feedback, I was really excited about the Audi A5 Sportback and VW Arteon.
Unfortunately the Arteon isn't due until September at the earliest. But I decided to check out the A5.

In true tri-geek fashion, I headed to the Audi dealer with my road bike stuffed in to the trunk of my 2001 Audi A6; wheels off but completely hidden in the trunk to test drive and bike-fit the A5.
Drove the A5; sweet car though a bit too "performance-oriented" for my 50+ years. Still would have bought it -- if the bike fit in the trunk!
Thank goodness the saleswoman was totally accommodating and let me geek out trying to put the bike in the trunk.
So yep, took the bike frame and wheels out and tried to place them in the trunk area of the A5. The trunk was just about 1 inch too short. No way to make it fit without dropping the seats. Bummer!
So then I went in to the showroom and tried the A4. No dice; exactly the same as the A5. So I tried the larger new A6. Bingo, plenty of room, just like in my old car.

So this meant "back to square one". Getting another A6.
I found a used 2016 model with the 3 liter turbo in blue, very similar to the two blue A6's I've owned for the past 17 years. Perfect car!
- Wanted to buy it but there is an open recall on it; something to do with the "fuel rails". So even though I wanted to buy it "that day", I couldn't! For some recalls, dealers can't sell the used car until there is a remedy.
- More importantly, my wife threatened a divorce if I got "Another GD Blue Audi just like your other two!"

So what to do? All A6's with this recall aren't available to buy "right now". How to get out of this predicament?

Answer - found a used Audi S6 in dark grey. The S6 is the performance version of the A6 that has a different engine without the recall. As a bonus, it also has 450 HP vs 335.
Additionally, because it's grey, my wife thinks it's a different car and is now happy but doesn't really know it has 50% more power and better gas mileage than my old 300hp A6.
But the bike still fits in the trunk, seats up, hidden from view.

Bingo! Couldn't be happier!

Really love to see this thread as I'm a big car guy and always on the lookout for what's next. Good to see my favorites (A5/S5/A7/S7 Sportback, V60 and Stinger) discussed quite a bit.

While the Honda Element trumps all for bike transporting (and sleeping/living in), after I settled down and started driving mountain roads regularly, the power and handling all of a sudden became a huge issue. Picked up an F30 335i for a ridiculous deal and it's been incredible. The bikes (58cm) went into the car at first with front wheel off, but now that a baby seat is permanently installed, I've started using a Yakima frontloader roof rack with a system that involves dragging a large bucket in front of my garage spot before I leave so that I have a visual cue to not destroy all that I love in one mistake.

It's worked great so far (and I kind of like having the bike on top to look at sometimes...), but if I could somehow find something that could fit a bike (front wheel off and fork mounted is fine) next to a car seat but also be low to the ground with good power and great handling that would be the Grail!

Oh front wheel is not bad! The Hard thing with a M4 is just such a tight fit you have to be carful not to scratch the bars.

Where did you hear this? Dealer? I am very interested - all the press indicated spring 2019 release (pushed back from original fall 2018). I have no doubt you're correct, but there's nothing in the press about pushing back again to Fall 2019 (I assume then as a 2020 MY)

Agreed. Removing front wheel with aquick release is fine as long as the bike slides in and out easy. Wonder how the new M4 Gran coupe that's planned will be...

I would have no problem taking the front wheel off if my wife would let me get a Model 3. ;-)

Totally; the A7 is probably perfect.

Test drove an MKZ and liked it a lot. It was actually 2nd behind the 335. I liked the exterior and interior styling of the MKZ better too, but ultimately it just felt a little too big for what I wanted at the time. That trunk space was massive tho!

I always vote for this - it's just best for bike racing, triathlon, and travelling!

Yeah, but so much more dynamic! But I've had my fun with a small two door rwd coupe I built in college (similar trap speed to an M4, but handled like crap if your goal wasn't to take corners sideways) and now I need room for an easily accessible car seat among other criteria.


That as a 3rd vehicle might be my eventual solution. It's top on my list for a minivan. Particularly when I have more than one kid and they are older and have friends and stuff. Then maybe I could go back to a small 2 door coupe...

I bought my car (2012 Ford Escape) specifically so I could fit my bike inside, upright, but with the front wheel removed, AND with room for another passenger and enough space for overnight bags. I drop the 40 of the 60/40 backseats and in it goes. The 54cm P2 and my MTB both fit inside the car alongside a weekend's worth of camping gear (two coolers, firewood, plus actual sleeping stuff) for Wildflower last year. But both had front wheels removed.

I can also fit the bike in with all the seats dropped without removing the wheel, but I almost always have something else in my car and don't like to do this.

Interestingly, neither bike fits comfortably inside the newer model of the Escape, front wheel removed or not.

I could fit any of my bikes in the rear of my 2dr saab 900 hatchback as long as the rear seats were folded down. The only one that was close to not fitting was a size large, stretched out FS 29er with chunky tires. It still went in with careful finessing.

But now, I went big. I have a sprinter, long wheel base high-roof. I am building a platform to hold 5 bikes upright (wheels on) and have 18" high of storage underneath them. There will be enough room for 2 more bikes behind the rear seat standing upright side to side or additional gear. It will hold up to 5 people and 7 bikes, all inside and out of the rain. OR, 2 people, 5 bikes and a queen sized air mattress.

I can fit multiple bikes inside our 2015 Ford Escape. I'm 6"5, so I have xxl or 61cm bikes. I can fit any of them inside without taking the front wheel off, including my fs 29er, as long as I fold some seats down. I can fit four bikes in there, upright, if I remove the front wheels and the seatposts. I made a rack out of 2x4's and the quick release skewer mounts. With 2 people-4 bikes fit inside. 3 people-3 bikes. 4 people-2 bikes inside. Pretty good for a vehicle that gets 30 mpg and was cheap to buy.

Our other car is a Nissan leaf, which only fits one bike, and I have to take the front wheel off and fold the seats down. But it's better than a four door sedan for bike transport.

I'm at an event right now and saw with two MX-5s - an NA and an ND - both with hitch mounted bike carriers. I know that thi si off topic, but both had two bikes. So (presumably) two people, two bikes and one tiny trunk for a weekend cycling event. Thay have got to be efficient packers b/c the trunk on my ND will not hold much more than one carry-on bag... EDIT for clarification

Ah - fair enough for the newer model. I did not try too hard with the seats completely down (that wasn't the criteria I was following). But good to know! I also don't have the inclination to remove seat posts, so I have not tried that configuration. I do plan to make a rack with skewer mounts, so if you have any plans you'd like to share that would be awesome!

Honda odyssey minivan. Still seats four family, and two bikes easy with wheels on. More with wheels off. It i great because you can put the bikes in the van, and go do your thing without worrying about safety, rain, or dirt from the highway.

It is great.

I've gotton 2 tri bikes + camping (inc big cool box) and race gear + 3 adults in the back of my Skoda Octavia estate quite happily. Wheels were off for this, but without the 3rd adult there would've been ample room to keep them on.

Not sure if you get Skodas out your way, but it's basically a rebadged Audi A4/VW Passat wagon

Ford Flex for the win. I can fit at least on TT bike and probably even sleep in that puppy.

Wagons are awesome. You can even stick a 60pound Boxer back there with the bikes without removing the wheels and groceries all at the same time. Plus you won't get called a soccer dad.

Everytime I pull into Trader Joe's I'm given ph #'s by single Mom's bc a wagon says safe, reliable, room for kids and sporty

Ok, maybe not every time or every 3rd time. Actually it just happened once.

which Volvo wagon though? as much as I like those wagons, the V60s are quite svelte (and not in a good way)

50-51 mpg in the Spring and Summer so I can drive to all the events. Bike fits great with the rear seats folded down.

Looks good, rides great, toight German handling, surprisingly peppy due to turbo, and gets great gas mileage -
I just got 41+ mpg driving home from work last nite, my new PB.
And that’s with snow tires on it (I’m lazy and haven’t switched over yet)

Road, cx & TT bikes can fit inside super ez.

The fatty & 29’er trail bikes are a much tighter fit, but I scoot the passenger seat forward a bit, and they’ll juuuust make it.
