American Zofingen 2018
Got this from Facebook;

''Signed documents at Mohonk today. American Zofignen will be May 20, 2018. Registration will be open shortly. Many new things coming and will post as we get them completed. I look forward to the annual family reunion of Zofignen athletes.''

I will probably be there as a volunteer this year and hope to race the following year. But let's hear from the Slowtwitchers who are tough enough to bring this race back with a bang. ST has become pretty wimpy lately, come to AZ and let us what you've got!

YES!!!

Got the lowdown direct from Tom Ganz yesterday afternoon up at Skytop at the SOS finish line.
He is FIRED UP that AmZof will be back again, and they are going to work hard to make it even better than ever.
Lots of new sponsors, in addition to most of the past ones.

Anybody who lives within driving distance of New Paltz NY has NO EXCUSE to not attend this race, it's one of the very best events in the country, in one of the most beautiful venues in the world.

Also - FREE BEER!!!
In Big Honkin Steins.

AmZof OG Kevin Krol & his lovely bride Anne make the 8 hour drive from Cleveland OH to New Paltz almost every year.
Suck it up, buttercups.

Be there.

Good news! I really missed the 2017 race and was happy to defer to 2018. In for 2018 LC.

Calendar is blocked. Looking forward to racing with the Canadian women and aiming for a sub 3:00. Then a lot of drinking and eating as the rest of the crowd runs through the pavilion over and over again.

SOS really??? (figured you were spectating)

Impressed that you swam more yesterday than all of the last 5 years ;)

No. 1 bike split is not to shabby either!

Nice job!

LOL!!
Yeah, I'm a local now, and apparently it's like a requirement of some sort.
I wasn't really given much choice in the matter.

Well, I kinda *was* spectating - got to watch at least 30-someodd people pass me after I got in first off the bike.
Was fun leading the race for the back half of the bike course, with a State Trooper in front of me, and a moto shooting video next to me.
My 15 miles of fame.

I have no idea who that guy is.

I got the race I trained for.
My geezer wave was 4th, so I got to ride thru everybody from the 3 waves in front of me, from 1-3 minutes ahead.
I got thru very cleanly, much to my surprise and delight.
Been biking fairly well, so the plan was to win the bike prime, then do whatever for the rest, and just try to "survive" the race.

Hoping to be in shape for AmZof next May.
I always "plan" to train for it - just haven't often kept to that plan these past few years.
Looking forward to seeing you there again, even if yer not going to be racing it, this time around.

Felt a ripple in the force and a tingling down where my bathing suit covers..........alas AmZof 2018 gets rubber stamped into my next May! Look forward to being humbled by CWD distance and watching the LC folks stride thru the pavilion whilst I enjoy burger and extras. Sure hope the shirts are white this year. Will the kilt wearing, baby bump sporting, McWheezy be piping up the National Anthem? (It's like going to Disney and seeing Mickey....a must have). Is it too early for the smack thread to get rolling? I understand if we lobby hard enough, the CWD damsel CeeCee might be encouraged to throw a brick on her gas pedal and make the trip down from Ontario to hold court in the pavilion. Some day hope to throw down for the GCG Memorial distance.........but that day awaits.

Odds are long against skirt-wearing Fatty McWheezy blowing the pipes next year, as he's no longer the RD and has pretty much completely stepped away from multisport these past 2 years or so.
Although he is now following me on Strava, if that counts for anything.

Very psyched that all of the (ir)regulars are going to be returning to the siren song of New Paltz, where the beer flows like wine, where beautiful Canadian Womens instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano.
I'm talking about a little race called AmZof.

BUMP.

2018 American Zofingen registration is NOW OPEN.

https://localraces.com/...ub/american-zofingen

anybody who deferred the 2017 registration is already automagically registered for 2018.

Tom has shot video of the entire bike course, which he will be editing/compressing and uploading shortly.
Ditto for the run course.

Game on!

Making a comeback this year and bringing a new team to AmZof. We are the pink flamingos and are a group of middle aged men who are better at drinking than multi sports, but looking to make a strong comeback. Seems like we should fit in!

You will see a bunch of men running around in pink tackling the middle course this year

Looking to make a comeback?

It IS awesome!

You can camp nearby if you so desire.
There's one campground area that is literally right along the bike course.

There are hotels fairly close by - everything from a Hostel thru cheap chains thru a Hampton Inn and all the way up to the 5* Mohonk Mountain House.

It is quite hilly, but nothing mere mortals can't handle.

All 3 distances start off with the same 5m trail run. It's hilly, but not terrible, and everybody runs all of the first run, because they can.
Enjoy that feeling, since you likely won't be doing that again the whole way the next time around.

Short Course aka Canadian Womens Distance then has 1 lap of the bike course, a challenging but super fun hilly 29m loop, which starts off (after bombing down the dirt road coming from transition) with a tough climb up Mohonk.
Followed by an E-ticket ripping descent.
It's an awesome bike loop, with a bunch of fantastic scenery and wide variety of terrain.

Short course finishes up with another 5m lap of the run course. Get acquainted with the term "power-hiking", since the gravity gets turned up to 11 on all the hills on the run course after you've done the bike loop.

Middle Distance aka the G Chris Gleason Memoral, is a F1 format:
Run/Bike/Run/Bike/Run.
So - identical to Short Course, but then you go out for another bike after the 2nd run, then a 3rd run lap after the bike.
T3 & T4 are definitely an interesting new experience.

Long Course - is 1 lap run/3 laps bike/3 laps run.
7-10+ hours of fun, for the same low, low price as the other 2 races!

All of which followed by FREE BEER!!
In Big Honkin Steins!!
(Assuming you place well enough to win one)
And a fantastic post race spread put out by Doug and crew from Main Street Bistro.

There's nothing more fun than finishing your race, hanging out drinking beer and swapping war stories, all while heckling the long course racers as they come thru the Pavilion yet again.
It doesn't get any better than that.

1. Hear me now and believe me later, you girlyman, you better start your training now if you're going to do anything longer than the Canadian Womens distance!

The "short course" takes longer to finish than USAT National "long course".

One of them is mislabeled.

And don't worry about the climbs. Its the downhills that will kill you.

Most, er many, ok - SOME - people really enjoy the descents.

Rather than white-knuckling your way down them, you should go with the prison rape strategy -
You can't avoid it, so try to relax and enjoy the ride, and get it over with as quickly as possible.

TT bike, with all the go-fast aero goodies you own, or can beg, borrow, or steal.

There's only a short dirt hill section that's unpaved and somewhat rough, the rest of the course is in decent to good to very good shape.
There are LOTS of parts that you'll be in the aerobars for miles at a time.

No, I want you to come back for your rapier-like wit, sparkling personality and cosmopolitan flair......or something like that.

Please don't have me fly solo with the Spandex Clad Mohonk Pavilion Trolls. But for their banjoes, they have very poor communication skills. I understand their "Hooked on Phonics" course only comes with half the sounds and three of which are farm animals. Never raced this course, but i've biked up to Skytop before. I almost cried on my way back down the mountain, the decent eastbound is so scary ;.; Especially the random ass stop sign (Canaan Road i think?) near the bottom when you're already going 30+ mph out of a damn turn. To anyone unfamiliar with the area, do yourself a favor and save some energy to hike up to Skytop tower. The views make the painful gravel grinding worth it

Been a really crappy spring that turned to summer. 2 things I predict - weather is going to suck. Either really hot or really cold. We will all be under prepared.

Personally, lots of work on my house & yard & lots of travel for work, so training has been a lacking. Fortunately I'm "only" running 10 miles and riding 28 in 2 weeks.

Just realized its 2 weeks away........

Perhaps I'll focus on the Spring dual next weekend. Its still New Paltz so it counts - right?

I saw your heart post. Good luck there, hope it all turns up to be nothing

While I get it's not a requirement to be in great shape to begin the smack talking, I was seriously considering DNS'ing this. But I've come around to embracing the potential (probable) DNF. I could drop down, and put a calendar reminder for today's deadline (I think) to switch, but as a proper Zofingen-ite (?), Zonfingen-er (?), I'm staying the course and remain signed up for LC. I'm looking forward to punishing myself through 2 legs, and then walking until it would be rude to go on.

So with that, here's some smack. Come on y'all - do LC. I dare you to try to run slower than me!

Been wondering as well. I'm out as my son graduates from college that weekend. Not sure I would've raced anyway as I've lost all desire but hoped to live vicariously through the AZ thread.

Without Murphy's Law championing the cause it's a graveyard here.

Sadly, I think last year's cancelation combined with McGovern handling over the RD duties (and similarly not posting) we may be witnessing the demise of AmZof.

But, like the slow death of triathlon in general, I guess it's not too surprising. I hope I'm wrong cuz if I ever race again it would be AmZof.

I'm in California for a trail run. I have to take it very easy this year, I'm having a heart issue that I hope won't turn out to be too bad. Angiogram when I get home.

I'm signed up and ready to go. This is my first time doing it so I figured I'd go all out and do the long course. How bad can it be for an old man in his mid 60's? As the say, "If I don't die on the way up, hopefully I won't kill myself on the way down".

By the way, what's recommended for a rear cassette? I will be using my road bike and have a 52/39 up front. I was thinking either 11/28 or even a 11/32 rear in case some of the grades go above 10% for any length of time. I'd hate to be grinding it out with a cadence lower than 60.

I used an 11/28 with the same rings you have up front. There's only one short super steep (low cadence) bump at the tail end of the bike loop. For long course, that totally blows on lap #3. The 32 could be handy on the first hill of the loop. It's not crazy steep, but it's fairly steep and not short. If you get a chance to do a practice ride on the course, I highly recommend it.

Thanks for the info. I will use the 11/32 cassette just in case. Better to be over geared than under even if the jumps per cog are more than I would like. It will be the lesser of the two evils. I wont have time to ride my bike prior to the race but I will definitly do some recon next week by at least driving the course.

I am registered for middle distance, and training has gone well. But, now on Day 12 of zero running due to a mysterious swelling/bruising/fuck-it-hurts in the bottom of my foot.

No promises from me on the race. Definitely not the right time for an injury. Really hoping I get there in some capacity!

I am out as well. I ran an ultra trail marathon in January and it crushed my soul (but sure was fun). At 54 I am finding it harder and harder to recover from the long, difficult races. I have Achilles issue that I havent been able to overcome yet.

I have ridden about 60ish miles of the Amzof course on my computrainer, 1 once a week for the past 3 weeks. Holy...f*cking balls... Trainer tire bits all over the place, high speed fan directly on the generator. Hope this gets me around the circle 3 times.

I still think this race is the best backyard, grass roots event going...

Waaaahhhh. I'm so sorry I'm not going to be there. The training just isn't where it needs to be. Tax Season blah, blah, blah. I'm very pleased to see that AmZof is continuing, albeit with a new RD and team. Wishing you all a good weather day, and all the best on the roads and in the woods. I have such wonderful memories of this race.

In other news, Tri_Yoda and I did our own version of AmZof last August in Penticton. Eat Mexican Dinner/Drink Mexican Beer-Race Duathlon Worlds-Eat Indian Dinner/Drink Indian Beer. And, he's not getting any shorter, and I'm not getting any taller!

Hello fellow AmZofians!!!

Sorry I have been derelict in my Marketing Director duties for AmZof this year, but I just started a new business after nearly 22 years in my old gig, so the past 6+ months have been all about getting that going, which we just did 3 weeks ago!

I used to bust on CeeCee for not being able to train/race due to her business obligations, and now I know exactly what she must have been going thru.
Although I doubt she had all of her former colleagues/"friends" from her old job actively trying to steal all of her best clients, a la what happened to Tom Cruise in the movie Jerry Maguire.

My Strava training log looks like the EKG of a dead man for the past few months, with just an occasional blip here and there.

But the other main reason I won't be there, is that it's my niece's college graduation weekend.
Her ceremony is at 8am tomorrow over in CT.
And my wife is her Godmother, so there was no getting out of it - not that I would have wanted to miss that anyway.

It looks like PERFECT American Zofingen racing conditions are on the docket for tomorrow!!!
50's and rain, just like it aughta be.

Stay safe, keep the rubber-side down, and have "fun" tomorrow!!!!

Speaking of the EKG of a dead man; this spring I got bad results on an ekg, bad on thr treadmill stress test, scarry on the cardiac ct-scan and competeley cleared on an angiogram this Tuesday. Yippee!!

ML, good luck with the new venture. Hopefully you will get time to train soon.

Good luck tomorrow everyone. Perfect conditions. Only problem, it's supposed to clear in the afternoon!

I am still unable to run so will not be joining in the the fun. I will certainly miss it, greatest starting line in racing and where else can you get a shot of whiskey before heading back out on the run course.

Above all, I will miss riding this bike course. I have never rode it well but damn, the views are spectacular and the challenge is so much fun.

Good luck to everyone racing, keep the rubber side down. Can't wait to read the race reports.

I was just about to ask the same thing ML.

Sad to hear that there don't seem to be a ton of alums out this year (or at least smack talkin'). Downer of a year (or three) for me too. 30X up Mohonk must have really screwed my legs. My mind and heart are still out there but the body....meh.

We weren't able to make it out this year to help Tom & team either - Anne's daughter is graduating in a week (plus all the stuff that goes along with making sure you've got everything set to get your kid off to college the first time), and we've been hosting an exchange student for the past 8 months. And business.

We'll be up for it next spring. If I can get my legs to function normally again, I'd throw down (mostly myself) at the Canadian Women's again for shits and giggles. Mostly shits.

STAY MOIST

2019 AmZof registration is OPEN!!

https://localraces.com/...an-zofingen-duathlon

There was a $10 off deal if you registered yesterday (which I didn’t, too busy) but for $100 it is BY FAR the best deal in all of multisport, especially for Long Course.

In all the years AmZof has been run, I have only missed it twice.
Hope to make my return next year to start up a new streak.

I need the RD to come up with a shorter course for his Administrator In Charge of Approving New Members to the Facebook Group.... but given that the CWD is only single laps of the shortest loops already, I think I'm out of luck to be able to come up with enough fitness for AZ.

I seem to attract new tax clients like Duathletes to Main Street Bistro Corn Bread.....

And you're right, it wouldn't shut me up. ;-)
