CX is more repeated "VO2max level" efforts than sustained threshold. I believe this translate well for the classics, assuming they can conserve their effort until it's time to go full-gas.

Similarly, I'd expect better results from a CX rider in a classic than a TT, although Wout proved otherwise yesterday.
In XC and Road this year, MvDP has had a devastating attack that either gaps people or allows him to make a crazy bridge. Again, short(er), very high intensity effort that's similar to his CX tactic: Get the big gap, make them give up on you and then back the pace off a bit.
