For both your points, he had the fastest bike split of the day, a couple minutes faster than Bart Aernouts, so the conditions may not have been fast. And Aernouts is also a former pro cyclist and no slouch on the bike.
Only on slowtwitch is the fastest time of the day in a 70.3 "not a strong bike split." :)
He finished 6th out of 30 pro men.
That's not a bad introduction to pro triathlon.
And he 'Only' finished 8 min back of one of the guys who went sub 8 at Kona. I'd say he's got the potential to be a really good long course pro given that bike split on that course.
