I used to think the same thing. Then we had a baby that I needed to be around to keep an eye on. I set up a trainer instead of being gone on bike rides and ended up getting WAY faster than ever before. Now I only ride outdoors for stuff 2 hours or more. Getting all the kit together, weather, darkness, flat tires, and dealing with traffic isn't worth it when you can just hop on the trainer to get in a killer workout with just bike shorts and shoes. The bike stays on the trainer unless I'm riding outdoors. I watch youtube vids, play Zwift, and ride TrainerView to pass the time while listening to Pandora or podcasts. Works fine. For what it's worth, I live in near Austin where we have pretty good biking weather all year round.
