Hiring temporary workers for one day would be a logistical nightmare. Also, the volunteers love it and don't have a negative attitude about it like you do. Before I did any IMs I remember being excited to volunteer out there because I really wanted to do triathlons and it was just an exciting day to be out. Nowadays I do much too many triathlons per year to be able to volunteer at any : (

EDIT: Also the other 'lowly' non WTC races also use volunteers but for some reason you seem to only be singling out WTC? Why is that?
